Obama Camp: Trip Overseas Is 'Under Consideration'

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama brushed off Sen. John McCain’s recent criticisms of him as more of the same "diversions" that are "standard fare" for the Republicans, but his campaign spokeswoman said he is considering a trip abroad.

McCain has been criticizing Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, his only trip to the war zone. The Arizona Republican says Obama can't really know the situation in Iraq if he has not seen it first-hand.

On the plane ride from Colorado to Chicago, Obama told reporters that McCain and the Republicans don’t have much ground to stand as they try to make an issue out of the frequency of his visits to Iraq.

"The Republicans don’t have a strong position to argue when it comes to substance," he said. "Their foreign policy has been a failure over the last eight years. The war in Iraq was a huge strategic blunder, our standing in the world is diminished, we’ve spent hundreds of billions of dollars and lost thousands of lives, Afghanistan is in worse shape than anytime since 2001 and we have [al Qaeda leader Osama] bin Laden sending out audio tapes, so not surprisingly they’re not going to want to argue the substance of what’s happened in their foreign policy, they’re going to come up with diversions."

McCain extended Obama an invitation to go to Iraq with him. According to Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki a trip to Iraq is not out of the question, but a trip with McCain is.

"A trip abroad is under consideration but there are no plans at this point," Psaki said. "But Iraq is a place to consider."

McCain said today in Reno, "Sen. Obama has been to Iraq once a little over two years ago, he went and he has never seized the opportunity except in a hearing to meet with General Petraeus [the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq]."

Today Obama responded to a question about McCain's remarks with a laugh.

"That’s just a typical sarcastic comment that doesn’t haven’t anything to do with the substance and is patently untrue, since I just saw General Petraeus when he was testifying in Washington," he said.

Obama was challenged further, asking why he had not had meeting with Petraeus that was outside of a hearing.

"This is just a flip comment, it’s not designed to actually talk about substance," Obama responded curtly not answering why he had not held meeting with Petraeus. "It’s a political comment that doesn’t get anywhere."

Obama in his campaign trip to general election states this week has been solely focused on McCain, and he says he’s not surprised the Republicans and McCain have been focused so aggressively on him.

"So far this is pretty standard Republican fare," he said of the back-and-forth with McCain recently. "He’s adapted George Bush policies and he’s going to adopt George Bush's tactics. I don’t know why anybody would be surprised by that."

Obama will take a break from campaigning Thursday, spending the day with his family in Chicago. Then he’ll return to the campaign trail, hitting the last two primary states of Montana and South Dakota heading into the weekend.

Why do you people worry about Obama meeting with Iranian terrorists? He values the US relationship with Israel--a nation born out of terrorism.

Stay SAFE Mr. Obama. YOU are the first ray of hope this nation has had in decades! Iraq IS NOT WORTH THE VISIT! Not at this point! We need you here, and we need to make sure you get this presidency! I would not trust McSame any further than I could see him.

BO should go to Zimbabwe and defend the American 'sweetie' that Mugabe called a hooker.

Soldiers that I have talked to (you know the real ones that are in Iraq), don't seem to thrilled to vote for McCain...go figure...they would like to see America again before they go on their 4th, 5th, or 10th tour of duty.

Don't proport to speak for America's fighting men and women. They can vote for themselves...and think...and they KNOW what is going on in Iraq.

Active duty personnel can't say anything openly about what they think, but they tell their familes a whole lot....let them and their familes vote how they want and don't assume you know what that might be.

Whether or not Obama visits Iraq is not particularly pertinent. What is more important is for the US to vacate Iraq in a timely manner.

Trip Overseas Is 'Under Consideration'

So, I see that Obama is considering a trip overseas. That is only fair, that when he loses the nomination that he take his Michelle (first time in my adult life I've been proud to be an American)on a slow boat to China kind of trip.

The man always seems to be playing at catch-up, never quite ahead of the game.
Axelrod has indeed created an empty suit that George Soros can totally control.
But that will never happen because Clinton will be the next President.

Dems are DONE in this 2008 Presidential Election. No matter which candidate is nominated, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, there will plenty of angry (and, disfranchised) Dems who feel their votes were not counted and consequently either stay home on the Election Day or worse, vote for McCain. SAD, VERY VERY SAD.

Senator Obama does need to listen to the troops in Iraq and notice I stated LISTEN. He has said he would withdraw the troops, check around for the enemy and send our troops back in if needed. That is a stupid way of managing the war. The Iraqis need to take over. They have had more than enough time and resources. I think they are a weak people. It has cost too many American lives and American dollars. It was a mistake to invade in the first place based on lies.

This guy is so slick, avoiding every political challenges with vague talks on anything but Obama policies.

"Afghanistan is worse than anytime in 2001..." I think that he doesn't know what's going on there either. Iraq is a mess, no one really disputes that (although it is better now than it was...but it was damn bad then too). Afghanistan is much better now that the Taliban is gone. It should've been our main focus all along.

Let's all go with McCain to a market in Iraq and get some good bargains with security forces all around us for protection.

He knows NOTHING about Iraq.

I think i's a good idea for Obama to go to Iraq with McCain. There is a misconception that all the troops are ultra-conservatives and that trip would be an opportunity for McCain to upstage Obama. I believe the opposite would happen.

After retiring for the military, I have continued to live and work among the troops overseas for the past 10 years. They are prohibited by law from any political activism except overt displays of support for the Commander and the mission. But, I am detecting levels of political interest among them that I've never seen before.

Here is my prediction. When senators Obama and McCain go to Iraq, you will hear a chorus building to a crescendo of Obama chanting. I suggest they should also do joint tours of all of the overseas troop locations. Obama's website shows that he has an advocacy group of Americans Abroad. At the same time we get an opportunity to see what our allied nations think.

The next election is not only important to us Americans. The whole world has a stake in it. We won't be able to tackle our problems with terrorism, the wars, and the economy alone. Our troops, who are suffering and sacrificing the most, will be the first to tell you how badly damaged our international image is. They understand the urgent need to start making repairs.

It's time for change.

jrenkx, I keep seeing that word, change change change and how Obama is going to bring it. I just never see HOW he's going to bring it. Can you tell me? The guy is a phony.

Posted by: Ryan | May 29, 2008 3:31:31 AM

OK Ryan, since you asked I'll tell you what change means for me.

I read all of the complaints that senator Obama is short on substance and senator Clinton is stronger on details. Anyone who believes the candidate who has nailed down all the details doesn't understand how the government works. Presidents only make proposals. The details are ironed out in the congress. Senator Clinton should have learned that lesson when she tried to push her health care solution whole cloth to the congress during her husband's administration.

Presidents can bully congress or veto them but then we end up with the disastrous, ineffective government we have had over the past 7 years. Change 1, I want a government that works.

I have visited all of the candidates websites. Senators Obama has ideas and proposals for all of the issues, but his site is unique. After each of his issues he has a link that says "Present your ideas." That tells me that he is not so arrogant as to believe he has all that answers. He is open minded and ready to reach out. Change 2, I want a government that will be inclusive and will listen to me and everyone else who offers constructive ideas.

I could go on with an entire list, but I'll stop here.

Anything said in criticism of Obama is dismissed as a "diversion". Don't mind the fact that there is truth in what McCain is saying....it's a diversion. Barry has ignored the reality on the ground in Iraq and is afraid to admit he was wrong in calling the surge a mistake.

Posted by: Jim | May 29, 2008 6:26:44 AM

Firstly anyone who says Obama is just an empty suit needs to start reading his books. You can disagree with him, you can think his vision for America is wrong, but the guy has a brain and a vision.

Secondly, i love that some people seem to think that the guy born of a Kenyan father, in Hawaii who lived in Indonesia during young childhood, is the one with no idea about the outside world. McCain's world vision seems to me to be dominated by the military. He seems to have little time for diplomacy or anything short of the troops. The best and most courageous soldiers should know that the best way to avoid casualties is to avoid war, if at all possible.

Finally, McCain himself, I believe I am right in saying, would not need a passport to visit Iraq if its on Congressional business. Would he not travel under a diplomatic passport? [Not the same thing!]

Its odd to me just how resistant some people can be to the idea of change.

Don't underestimate the loyalty veterans hold for other veterans. Obama will walk a fine line if he starts to impugn McCain's service to his country.

You may disagree with the war and the cost of American lives but, America has an all volunteer military and our troops are there because they want to be. When you degrade anyone that supports the troops you affront the very people you should be supporting.

Obama's inexperience in foriegn policy will come out more as the election unfolds. So will McCain's inexperience on economics come forth.

If you don't like your choices, the time for a third party is now.

REGISTER INDEPENDENT and free yourself from the party mentality of voting for a party and not the individual.

I know the reason Obama does not go to Iraq. It's simple. He is a "COWARD".Listen to Obama,he avoids and never stands up to or for anything. He is even scared of Hillary. He is and never will be a leader.
