Obama Gives Wesleyan Commencement Address in Place of Kennedy

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., paid homage to Sen. Ted Kennedy’s service to the country while he "pinch-hit" for him, delivering the commencement address at Wesleyan’s graduation ceremony.

Amid 15,000 people, Obama passed on a message from Kennedy, D-Mass., who had asked the presidential candidate to speak on his behalf.

"I’d like to start by passing along a message from Ted," Obama said, and then read words from Kennedy: "To all those praying for my return to good health, I offer my heartfelt thanks. And to any who’d rather have a different result, I say, don’t get your hopes up just yet!"

Obama said he was glad to know Kennedy’s sense of humor is as strong as ever, and told the Connecticut crowd that Kennedy couldn’t be there because he is at home resting since being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

With Kennedy’s wife Vicki and stepdaughter Caroline Raclin (who was graduating from the university) listening in the audience, Obama reminded the students of Kennedy’s contributions to America, adding, "And I have a feeling that Ted Kennedy is not done just yet."

Using the Kennedy legacy for a platform, Obama’s commencement address was a call for the students to serve their country.

"There’s no community service requirement in the outside world -- no one forcing you to care. You can take your diploma, walk off this stage, and chase only after the big house and the nice suits and all the other things that our money culture says you should buy," Obama said. "You can choose to narrow your concerns and live your life in a way that tries to keep your story separate from America’s. But I hope you don’t."

Obama used his own life story as an example to the graduates, retelling his biography and rise into the political arena.

"I spent much of my childhood adrift," Obama said of his upbringing, raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. "My teenage years were filled with more than the usual dose of teenage rebellion, and I’ll admit that I didn’t always take myself or my studies very seriously."

Obama said it was through service that he began to find his way –- and challenged each of the near-700 graduates to do the same.

"You don’t have to be a community organizer or do something crazy, like run for president, "Obama joked of his own story. " Each of you will have the chance to make your own discovery in the years to come."

Obama largely avoided presidential politics in his 25-minute address. This is his first commencement speech of the graduation season.

It was a nice speech and by the looks of it, it touched the Kennedy's greatly.
Every Dem thats reads this post. What is everyone thinking? Clinton bashers, Obama bashers, insults, racism, sexism, false statements about both canidates and their supporters. I have to figure that some do these blogs as a sport or something. It doesnt sway votes from one side to another. Canidates actions and words do that. There seems very little discussion about policies or issues other than to make a point so someone can follow with a nasty name or insult. The world that reads these and the republicans must eat this up. Shure gives the GOP some ideas for amo for later on. We on these sites should be talking about McCain and what a bad choice for America he will be. Who ever wins, Clinton or Obama will win and it wont be by anything said on these blogs
that determins that. Please keep whats important in focus. Quit causing hate and devision on both sides and remember they are both a like in many ways and want the same things for our country. This isnt some football game and has a little more importance. Just my 2 cents worth.

The_Mick:

You are dead-on. And some of these posters work for the campaigns. "Jihad" on the FoxNews boards comes to mind. He was the troll who would post about Obama being a Muslim until the whole Reverend Wright flap.

I agree that any Democrat who says they will vote Republican if their candidate doesn't win is either a moron, a racist, a sexist, or just a complete imbecile who should have their voting rights stripped (and possibly sterilized, so as not to further taint the gene pool).

If you agree with the Democrats on the most important issues to you and you family, how do you justify voting Republican this year? Any year?

Dumba$$es.

Keith Olberman is THE most obnoxious human being I have ever had the displeasure of watching. If he's real good, maybe Obama will let him lick his shoes, oooops, my bad, he's already doing it.

Know Obama....NO Obama
No Hillary....NO VOTE

Keith Olberman is horrible the way he attacks Clinton and any one else he doesnt like. They ought to fire him.
And yes I support Obama

Obama 08

Let's not forget what the article was about...it was about a presidential candidate filling in at the last minute for a friend and supporter, someone Obama truly cares about (Ted Kennedy) His speech was not supposed to be about politics...yes it's Memorial Day BUT he had 25 minutes to inspire a few hundred graduates to make a difference in their country. I myself am very inspired and impressed that he stayed focused and did not take this opportunity and turn it into something else. It is what it is...a commencement speech. He will make a GREAT president because he has the ability and humility to surround himself with other great people who will HELP him make great decisions for our country. Obama..what about Colin Powell...I think he would cross party lines! YES WE CAN!

I saw the speech. It was a good speech, calling on young people to hear the call of the nobility of public service.
JFK's clarion call to service was what inspired the Clintons. Obama is a good vehicle for delivering this message to the current generation. That's his great contribution. But what I was thinking as I listened to him was, this guy is a good motivational speaker but there's no substance there. I don't think he's capable of running the U.S. government. Running the government competently and effectively is a massive undertaking. Bush's ineptitude reminded folks how hard it is. If someone runs the government well, the media and the general public don't notice. The leadership is so seamless and competent, it's taken for granted. That was Bill Clinton. I don't have confidence in Obama or McCain to be able to handle it. And first and foremost the change I want in DC is leadership that knows how to competently discharge the duties of the executive branch. Obama won't even get to first base if he can't do that.

SJ...he serves in the Senate. It's called public service.

"It is the only thing Obama is good for is giving a speech.Other than that he is completely worthless.
Posted by: seah | May 25, 2008 2:52:12 PM"

Seah, are you worthless? Is that's how you know that Obama is?
Demeaning someone is demeaning yourself. God creates us all; unless you don't believe in God?

Keith Olberman has one of the finest brains. He is well informed, does his homework and knows his history. Some of you need to read more and be less emotional. It is important that you discuss thoughts in a mature and intelligent way instead of being unkind to each other. Americans are better that what some of you are displayiny in your comments.

I find it interesting and comical that Obama detractors attack him for consistently delivering great speeches. We should all realize that the most important functions of a leader in business or politics is to clearly articulate a position and to motivate others to support that position. Obama is proving his ability to lead even as he is being attacked for it. He built the best campaign organization, the best message, the best web interface and the best strategy for putting all of these into practice. The other candidates seem to be saying "if you can't beat him, attack him where he is strong". Don't attack the man who is motivating the largest crowds and registering the most voters and raising the most money. That's the way politics works in this country, like it or not. Obama didn't make the rules, he is just playing according to the rules. The question for the other candidates is "why can't you match Obama's success?" Could it be that this country is changing to take it's place in a global economy? And could it also be that those who are best prepared for a global economy are those who are better educated and better informed? The more informed a person is, the more likely he or she is to be affected by Obama's message because Obama understands the world we live in. Sure, he is an exciting candidate but the truth is that any candidate who brought the same message would have been equally successful.

I am a democrat, but I really donot trust Obama, I hear him saying things he does not mean just to impress certain people, so they think he is in their orbit. I donot think he would make a good president at all. he has alot of hangups about white people, as he is only half. he does not seem to have much respect or his wife for this country. When or if he is elected, he will do whatever he wants, and then all who elected him will realize what kind of a person he is, and what he represents.

Thanks God for finally giving this country the possibility to have some real and honest person as president.

After so many years of lies and manipulations, maybe we have paid enough penitence to deserve someone fair and balance as Obama.

CAIN and his barbie wife represent the republican corruption, love for power and the willingness to make millions promoting sinful addiction to alcohol.

We need someone real not a blood seeker and power seeker.

Good spiritual people will not vote for a man from the clan of CAIN. Americans are good religious people and will not allow the entrance to CAIN and his deceitful ways.

Lets remember something about JFK. Yes, he had a beautiful wife, money and the phony Camelot perpetrated by Jackie, but, JFK is also the Pres. who can accept the respon. for putting us into Viet Nam. How many Americans were killed or left to a hopeless life to live here on earth?
Yes, Obama gave a commencement speech. BIG DEAL!!
Ted Kennedy has been behind Obama and his politics since day one. That commencement speech was all about POLITICS INCLUDING..... Kennedy's decision to have Obama deliver it.
YES, Obama most certainly should have honored our soldiers in that presentation.
This is Memorial Day wkend. What Obama should have done was to encourage EVERY ONE OF THEM GRADUATES TO ENLIST AND GIVE BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY. FOR ALL YOU OUT THERE LIKE OBAMA AND HIS WIFE WHO MADE IT FINANCIALLY NICE FOR THEMSELVES, YOU AND YOUR KIND AND ALL THE REST SHOULD HAVE TO DO A FOUR YEAR STINT IN THE MILITARY UPON GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!
Granted normally in public service you don't make millions which people like Obama and the Kennedy's don't understand. As for calling serving in the Senate or Congress public service. LOL!! One hundred fifty to two hundred years ago it was public service. These days they think they own this country and we have no rights to stand up to them and their personal self seeking ways.
Now if someone really desires to serve in public service without the hidden agenda of self seeking ego and finances then serve your military staight out of high school
You all who love O. just remember if your wish comes true and he was to be elected, I hope your regrets won't be psychologically unbearable because you were swayed by smooth speech and finesse, instead of digging and looking for truth and facts yourself, instead offalling for his well practiced smooth facade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say vote for whomever you want, but realize what your vote means.

Do you want the war to continue- and even worse, the mindset and propoganda that took us into the war?

Do you want the top 1% to continue to receive the tax advantages while the middle class continues to experience decreasing wages and jobs?

Is that ole trickle down theory trickling down to YOU?

Do you want Roe vs. Wade overturned?

Do you want to continue to watch our country lose it's power and reputation around the world by the 'with us or against' us mentality?

THAT's what your vote for McCain means. A little hard for me to get behind that agenda.

The same kind of rhetoric you will hear from a playbook from the Myannmar military junta ...so what is new, America ?

Posted by: csquan | May 26, 2008 9:20:49 AM

It was not a speech for only the American's but for all who love the progress of nature, that has no boundary.
I do not see him, OBAMA as given speech, but as a messenger fully on his roll.
Some call him an inspirer, but I see a giver in many ways.
Thank you Ted Kennedy for leting us know him, I would continuely pray for recovery and God will bless you and OBAMA for coming on stage at this era, just to put things right in the World through the mercy and grace of God that can not be hinder. Cos all power belong to God our creator.
Both of you are the symbol of peace and hope for the hopeless.
Once again God bless you all.
