Obama Reaches Pledged Delegate Majority

Share

May 20, 2008 11:30 PM

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: Barack Obama has been allocated 24 pledged delegates so far tonight and now claims a majority of the pledged delegates at stake in Democratic nominating contests, according to the ABC News delegate estimate. Delegates continue to be allocated as the results come in from the Oregon Democratic primary.

There are 3253 total pledged delegates –- 1627 is a majority.

Obama has not secured the Democratic nomination –- he is still 86 delegates away from reaching the DNC's magic number of 2026 to win the nomination.

The Obama campaign hopes that reaching this marker will be a convincing argument for the remaining 200 uncommitted superdelegates – to follow the will of the voters and support him.

Obama spoke Des Moines, Iowa, the place where he started his path to the Democratic nomination back in January.

In those remarks, Obama stopped short of declaring victory in the nomination fight but did note the pledged delegate milestone.

"And tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people, and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States," he said.

The Obama campaign is mindful of the fact that there are three more primaries on the calendar, that Hillary Clinton shows no signs of dropping out of the race before June 3 and that they don't want to be seen as pushing her off the stage. Campaign officials have stressed that tonight marks a milestone in the nomination process but not the coronation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos in March that the superdelegates should back the pledged delegate leader.

"If the votes of the superdelegates overturn what's happened in the elections," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said to ABC News, "it would be harmful to the Democratic Party."

He doesn't even care about the people who voted in WVa, KY, FL. and MI. I thought dems cared about ALL the votes..

The only person Hilliary can elect now is John McCain. She needs to decide for herself if her legacy will be defined by that. If she really thinks that she can win in '12, then why throw it all away now; But if she wants to destroy the party and give us John McCain while alienating the black vote for the Democratic party, I'm sure the GOP won't mind a bit.

Posted by: blog | May 20, 2008 11:52:47 PM

Newsflash..Obama's camp said tonight they didn't need Clinton. They feel they can do this thing without her and the past she brings!

Go Obama!!! America turns a new page.

Posted by: TK | May 20, 2008 11:57:46 PM

Blue Collar Americans reject Obama.

Obama fooled many Democrats before his radical ties with Jeremiah Wright was widely known, but his secret is out now.

I'm a long-time Democrat, but, like millions of other Democrats, there is no way I'm voting for Far Left Obama.

If Obama supporters think differently, they are only fooling themselves.

This democrat will not vote for Obama!

Posted by: Ron | May 21, 2008 12:10:21 AM

This is the right time to support Obama and give courage to HILIARY for all boldnesss she has taken. These two people can joint together to bet MC CAIN in general election, which mean HILIARY didn't lose because her party still won the general election.

Some of these "superdelgates" better wake up and smell the coffee not be drinking the cool aid, Clinton is destroying Obama in the states necessary to win the white house, and by margin spreads that seem to keep growing, some of the turncoats that broke from the Clinton camp ought to stop and think, you want to lose the white house then stay with the cool aid kid Obama

liberal,
That figure is for you and people from Obama side, not for us. We have done our homework before go to the polls.

Posted by: Sowhat? | May 21, 2008 12:18:18 AM

I have sent email requesting Hillary to forsake Democrat party and switch to Independent. If this happens, will end the hope for Obama! We don’t need DNC. We don’t need a party. All we need is a best candidate!

Posted by: Sowhat? | May 21, 2008 12:29:24 AM

I certainly hope the best candidate stays in this race until the convention. Senator Obama has not been honest in his campaign nor what he can and will do for our country. He care little about a large segment of the population. He is all talk and no substance or action.
Hillary, hang in there. And yes, all 50 states should have their votes counted.

Posted by: Mai | May 21, 2008 12:41:19 AM

Mtheracist,Annie,

He went to Michigan 2 days ago and there were some protesters against him.
Yes, he is beginning to kiss and tell now to FL and MI.

Posted by: catleya | May 21, 2008 12:46:57 AM

Tungsten,
You are talking like Obama has won. He has not. Why can't he ever close the deal? Why is the so-called presumptive nominee being crushed in swing states even at this late date, even when people like Edwards tries to rescue him. Obama has a problem, his 15 minutes got used up by Wright, he's just waiting for the tsunami to hit in his wake.
=======================================
Obama and BitterGate, we shall not forget!

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | May 21, 2008 12:48:00 AM

Ron,

I agree.
DNC has odd rules.
He leads in pledge delegates now because of the endorsements also.
Hillary worked so hard in Ohio, PA and other big states but she got nothing.

Posted by: catleya | May 21, 2008 12:52:42 AM

SuperDelegates,
The will of the voters as shown by more people having pulled the lever for Clinton than Obama is that Hillary Clinton shall be the next President of the United States of America. Either choose Hillary now, or wait until the rules committee meets and decides in favor of Democracy when it comes to at least Florida (all names were on the ballot), then pull the lever for Hillary
========================================
Hillary '08 or '12, the lower the number the higher the IQ of the Democratic Party.
========================================

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | May 21, 2008 12:53:07 AM

What about more than 2.5M voters in FL and MI? Shouldn't they have a say in this very close primary? What about electoral map? What about popular votes? Why is the pledged delegates so important? Most of Obama's lead in pledged delegates came from those caucus states where democrats have no chance winning in the fall.

At this stage of primary, Obama still lost huge in Kentucky. He is a very flawed nominee for the General Election. Those ultra-liberals in the Democrat Party are so in the bed with Obama that they could not (or are not willing to) see it.

Posted by: George | May 21, 2008 12:53:34 AM

Obama is a hypocrite and will end up a loser. The whole MI and FL vote is a shell game played by the DNC on Obama's behalf. First they don't count it to create momentum for Obama, now that the numbers are in Obama's favor they will find some crooked way to "count" MI and FL.

Regardless of whether the delegates are eventually seated or not FL&MI voters will never have a say throughout this process as their vote did not influence the elections in any way until now, unlike all the other states that voted. Each of those states' votes influenced the perception of who's winning and who's losing, which in turn influenced how other states voted.

Obama = Hypocrite = Bitter = Loser

Posted by: Mahesh | May 21, 2008 1:15:50 AM

Hillary won Kentucky by 35% tonight, a significant victory, yet CNN chooses to splash Obama's picture over it's front page. Tell me the media isn't biased.

I'm not voting Obama in the fall. No means no. I will either stay home or vote Mccain if Hillary is not the nominee. Having Obama shoved down our throats as some sort of celebrity messiah is just wrong.

Posted by: Tom | May 21, 2008 1:21:14 AM

Divided we fail Democrats. If McCain wins we all lose.

Posted by: ann31 | May 21, 2008 1:24:06 AM

Sowhat,

I think you are right.
CNN and MSNBC rates are down. This morning Anderson Cooper was on the " View" show promoting Obama.

FYI his mother is apparel designer, Gloria Vanderbilt.
I stop buying her brand either.

Posted by: catleya | May 21, 2008 1:24:37 AM

You know it's funny listening to all you Hillary supporters and your whining and crying about Obama, I read on here someone said Obama can't close the deal, when did Hillary close the deal? what a bunch of sore losers!! You say Hillary should get all the delegate counts from the states she won, well Obama won way more and maybe he should get all of those delegates to himself and he would still be way ahead. You are pathetic, you will make up any excuse to try and get Hillary in and no wonder you support Hillary you all sound just like her, like an old worn out welcome mat. Just look where her lies and mud slinging got her! Michigan and Florida are where the candidates agreed to let them be, because they went out of line and now because Hillary is losing BIG she wants to change it, go figure, anything so Hillary can have her way.

It doesn't help if you claim I have my facts wrong and then repeat exactly what I said in the first place.

Sure sounds like Obama to me - Supports Wright and then condemns Wright for saying exactly the same thing he said in the first place.

This is hilarious.

Obama = Flip-Flop = Contagious

It should:”If Obama loses, Americans all win because Hillary Clinton will bring back the prosperousness for all Americans that have lost for the last 7-8 years”

Posted by: stock_craft | May 21, 2008 2:13:11 AM

Debra - If you controlled this election like you said, wouldn't you be ahead in pledged, super and overall delegates?

Just a thought.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:14:36 AM

Debra,

Explain this:

Why not just accept that Barack Obama won this elction fair and square and accept him as the party's nominee? That is a direct question from me to you. Can you honestly answer that question without any campain rhetoric? Honestly, If the rules of this process was understood months in advance, and Obama wins by abiding by the rules, why is that not fair?

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 2:18:22 AM

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:25:31 AM

Vickie - Didn't Hillary bad mouth everyone that used to work with them and voted for Obama and trash them publicly? How is that not throwing them under the bus? Didn't she consistently say that states that she didn't win, "didn't count"? Hois that not throwing half the country under the bus? Isn't that throwing over half the country under the bus?

Again, I'm very curious how you differentiate the two

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:32:38 AM

Pure and simple..You never treat your family that way. If you will do it to them then nothing is beyond your realm of stupidity in your quest to self gratification.

Different playing field altogether when your family is not off limits to bad mouthing just to get what you want.

1) WHy is McCain better than Obama but not better than Clinton for the Presidency?

2) I just want to clarify this. I have heard lots of opinions on the matter, but I want to hear yours: Explain how Obama threw his Grandmother under the bus, in your opinion.

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 2:56:31 AM

Debra,

You are right. WE ARE NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT..

However,

Isn't one of America's greates attributes that anyone can be President? If we did find someone who has NEVER so much as walked down the same street at the same time as someone with questionable character, has NOT made one bad criticsm of their country, and has made the right decision in every single decision that this person has made, that would make him...Jesus?

Or an Elitist(GASP??) Come on, get real. I'll ask again, should I put up some of Clinton's past associations?

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 3:01:24 AM

For obama blind supporters about supreme court, haven't you heard that obama endorsed the decision of gay marriage by CA judges?? These judges approve gay marriage and refused to accept the over 60% of Californians oppose. Judges don't have rights to make social issues based on their feelings. IS THAT THE KIND OF PRESIDENT YOU WANT TO CHOOSE SUPREME COURT JUDGES?? And what are you scare of? President appoints Judges and House and Congress approve. There's no reason to doubt the Dem will take over House and Congress. If you read our history, WE NEVER DO GOOD WHEN HOUSE, CONGRESS, PRESIDENCY BELONG TO ONE PARTY. OUR SYSTEM IS BASED ON BALANCE OF POWER SO WHEN IT'S OUT OF BALANCE, THIS COUNTRY IS SHAKING. THEREFORE, IF DEM CONTROL HOUSE AND CONGRESS, PRESIDENCY MUST BE REP TO BALANCE THE POWER. We have to go with how our system sets up because when we mess up with the system, everything is out of order.

Most of the 17 million plus that Support Hillary Clinton and many that were fool by Obama ate the begining of the primaries won't support him in the GE. Obama can not win just with the AA voters and a few college freshmen.

Posted by: libre | May 21, 2008 3:42:47 AM

Staniam,

Actually, you don't know what you are talking about. The DNC, like the RNC is a private organization that can nominate whomever it pleases for president. The constitution says absolutely nothing about political parties.
I know, I have only studied and passes many constitution exams with flying colors.

Furthermore, Democrats and republicans did always have primary elections for nominations. These things were decided at the conventions through back room deals. The constitution says nothing about the rules and process in which a political party can chose its nominee. The DNC "allows" the States and voters to play a significant role in nominating its candidates, provided they follow the rules it choses to lay out. Its based largely on the choice of the people now, and the people chose Obama. Get over it. The case won't even make it in court.

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 3:44:08 AM

Vickie,

Wow! Well that sounds like a really dried up choice... Good luck with that. Now you and Hillary can go bye, bye!

Well well well..it started working again..so I am not gone and neither is Hillary. I don't care anymore..don't you see..I will be happy with McCain if he wins it doesn't have to be Hillary..I prefer her but I will be happy with McCain..and if it is neither..I will just have four more years that I don't have a president..I'm getting use to that anyway.

Posted by: Vickie | May 21, 2008 3:47:59 AM

Hannah...alot of what you say makes sense and I believe McCain has been spared for a reason (he may have even said that somewhere). I am looking forward to volunteering for him in Sept. (if Hillary is out of the race) and working to get him elected. He has an AMAZING life story, which will get out there more after the Dem battling settles down. MSNBC did a great one hour bio on him....everyone should see it.

Posted by: Debra | May 21, 2008 3:52:04 AM

We are not going to stop Obama, he is unelectable on his own. We just won't support him, so a democrat nominee without the votes of Democrats is worth what?

Mat be dumb but I want to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton.

Posted by: libre | May 21, 2008 4:24:18 AM

Debra,

Thank you, I am glad to be talking to a sensible Hillary supporter. Obama was well into politics by the time Wright started making his contraversal sermons, so I doubt he had the time to pay much attention to the sermons being deliveres every Sunday. Furthermore, I doubt Obama had presidential ambitions way back when he joined the Church.

But your statement goes to a broader question. Why is it bad that he attended an all black church? Why is America so afraid of the black community? Obama is an African American who was raised around indonesians for a time then whites. He then worked with and went to Church with African Americans... Probably in an effort to help build the community. SO, his pastor and friend turned out to be a nut case. Obama has never shown in any of his actions in all his political career and private work and studies that he believes the things Wright has preached recently.

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 4:30:13 AM

Super delegates still have the chance to do right by Democrats, Nominate Hillary, Obama is unelectable.

Posted by: libre | May 21, 2008 4:30:46 AM

Ok, we all know that Obama will get the nomination because he's AA. It's been said that there would be riots at the convention if he does not.. So we have to please the AA community. We also know that he won't win in GE.

Posted by: This Is More Important | May 21, 2008 4:31:41 AM

I have 1 question for liberals - you seem to hate the government so much (or more so than others) but then why do you want the government for everything (like obama wants to governize and socialize more). Have you heard of the difference of Public school and Private school or even Home school??

Posted by: hannah | May 21, 2008 4:35:49 AM

Debra,

We are two liberal judges away from a Supreme court that will be retiring in the next 2 to 4 years.

If McBush is in there, then Roe v Wade goes away. And so does your right to a legal abortion... BIG PICTURE FOOL!

Thanks for remembering the 60's and the early 70's when abortions were illegal and doctors and women were being arrested and put in jail for it!!!!

Good luck with that....

Posted by: Davis | May 21, 2008 4:39:22 AM

Debra,

That's a fair minded answer, but I disagree with you. Obama is 10 times smarter than McCain. While he does have an excellent Military service, McCain has never been one to understand the finer details of what makes things tick. I don't mean to trash the man, but it is true that he graduated near the bottom of His class in High School and in the Navy Academy. Obama, on the other hand was President of the Harvard Law Review and has taught at the University of Chicago, one of the finest colleges in the Nation.

Furthermore, he has demonstrated that he is a quick and fast learner and a problem solver. I am not taking any credit from Senator Clinton, for she too has her list of achievements. I would have voted for her if Obama was not running. She is my number 2 choice.

As far as republicans, I think I would have preferred Romney over McCain, but that's me. I think the President need to have the brains and the smarts to lead the nation. Bill Clinton was that man in 1992. It was the reason he was such a sucessful president. HE WAS SMART and educated. He knew how the system worked and was a fast learner for someone with limited experience prior to taking office.

Obama has shown that he can dance with the big boys and he deserves credit for that.

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 4:40:27 AM

I am glad that Obama is unelectable, if president he could institute the sharia.

Hannah,

First of all, Obama has never expressed any kind of dislike for babies, he has two loving children of his own. He did express his dislike for overturning Roe V. Wade, acknowleding that many teens make mistakes and should not be have to be burdened with Child care when they are not ready for parenting. You can take what you want from that, but even Hillary is Pro - Choice.

Second,

Liberals do not hate the country. They just want to change it to be more progressive and less authoritorian. Hillary Clinton was out there fighting that good fight too, at one point. She campaigned hard for George McGovern, one of the most liberal democrats to ever get the nomination. That's right Hillary and Bill were once Bleeding Hearts and had ties to many liberal radicals of that era.

There is a term that is used in describing college educated people who lack common sense.

Educated Fools

Let's all try NOT to be one of those. It is such a waste of money.

We are not going to back barack even if Hillary asks. We will write her name on the ballot and like that she will crush Obama. McCain may win, so we will wait to 2012

Hannah,

OK, as far as the Supreme Court Goes, The judges have EVERY Right to make such decisions, regardless of what the popular opinion is. The Supreme Court is one judge away from overturning Roe V Wade and that is a fact. One of those judges will likely retire within a McCain Presidency. You are right that congress will likely be controlled by democrats, but they will be forced to accept a conservative leaning Judge for the seat.

Oh, and for your balance of power argument, 7 of the 9 Judges on the Supreme Court were appointed by Republican presidents. How is that balanced? Furthermore, The President has a little something called VETO Power. With McCain as President, all those reforms like Healt Care, College, etc will get a big fat VETO from McCain. SO, no meaninful legislation would get passed. And lets face it
