Obama Reaches Pledged Delegate Majority

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: Barack Obama has been allocated 24 pledged delegates so far tonight and now claims a majority of the pledged delegates at stake in Democratic nominating contests, according to the ABC News delegate estimate. Delegates continue to be allocated as the results come in from the Oregon Democratic primary.

There are 3253 total pledged delegates –- 1627 is a majority.

Obama has not secured the Democratic nomination –- he is still 86 delegates away from reaching the DNC's magic number of 2026 to win the nomination.

The Obama campaign hopes that reaching this marker will be a convincing argument for the remaining 200 uncommitted superdelegates – to follow the will of the voters and support him.

Obama spoke Des Moines, Iowa, the place where he started his path to the Democratic nomination back in January.

In those remarks, Obama stopped short of declaring victory in the nomination fight but did note the pledged delegate milestone.

"And tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people, and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States," he said.

The Obama campaign is mindful of the fact that there are three more primaries on the calendar, that Hillary Clinton shows no signs of dropping out of the race before June 3 and that they don't want to be seen as pushing her off the stage. Campaign officials have stressed that tonight marks a milestone in the nomination process but not the coronation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos in March that the superdelegates should back the pledged delegate leader.

"If the votes of the superdelegates overturn what's happened in the elections," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said to ABC News, "it would be harmful to the Democratic Party."

Divided we fail Democrats. If McCain wins we all lose.

Sowhat,

I think you are right.
CNN and MSNBC rates are down. This morning Anderson Cooper was on the " View" show promoting Obama.

FYI his mother is apparel designer, Gloria Vanderbilt.
I stop buying her brand either.

You know it's funny listening to all you Hillary supporters and your whining and crying about Obama, I read on here someone said Obama can't close the deal, when did Hillary close the deal? what a bunch of sore losers!! You say Hillary should get all the delegate counts from the states she won, well Obama won way more and maybe he should get all of those delegates to himself and he would still be way ahead. You are pathetic, you will make up any excuse to try and get Hillary in and no wonder you support Hillary you all sound just like her, like an old worn out welcome mat. Just look where her lies and mud slinging got her! Michigan and Florida are where the candidates agreed to let them be, because they went out of line and now because Hillary is losing BIG she wants to change it, go figure, anything so Hillary can have her way.

Obama 2008

Some people said he wins because he can talk.

Posted by: catleya | May 21, 2008 1:30:08 AM

Obama remains unelectable. Democrats now know more about him and won't vote for him in the GE

Posted by: libre | May 21, 2008 1:33:14 AM

Sorne,

What do you mean with that words?
In the GE both party either Rep and Dem will need those people in WV and KY.
Just like now, Obama started to kiss MI and Fl people.

btw may I say the crowd in OR last weekend are...listened to his empty promises?

ann31,

If Obama wins then America loses.
If McCain wins, we lose some but America wins.

America always comes first, even before me or my personal interests.

Ergo VOTE FOR MCCAIN IF HILLARY IS NOT THE DEM CANDIDATE.

Libre,

He won OR because OR has so many young college students and young people work for high tech.
Some of them have never voted before, only this time they want their idol win.

Catleya post: "He won OR because OR has so many young college students and young people work for high tech..."

I think He can only won from Kids who have never worked very hard for their living.

David,

It doesn't help if you claim I have my facts wrong and then repeat exactly what I said in the first place.

Sure sounds like Obama to me - Supports Wright and then condemns Wright for saying exactly the same thing he said in the first place.

This is hilarious.

Obama = Flip-Flop = Contagious

Ann31 post: “Divided we fail Democrats. If McCain wins we all lose.”
It should:”If Obama loses, Americans all win because Hillary Clinton will bring back the prosperousness for all Americans that have lost for the last 7-8 years”

Debra - If you controlled this election like you said, wouldn't you be ahead in pledged, super and overall delegates?

Just a thought.

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:14:36 AM

Debra,

Explain this:

Why not just accept that Barack Obama won this elction fair and square and accept him as the party's nominee? That is a direct question from me to you. Can you honestly answer that question without any campain rhetoric? Honestly, If the rules of this process was understood months in advance, and Obama wins by abiding by the rules, why is that not fair?

Congratulations, Mahesh. You outscored your opponent 2 to 1 in the ninth inning of a game you lost 20 to 8.

Again, congratulations!

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:19:44 AM

Hey, Davis, just congratulate him on his "win". He deserves it!

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:22:12 AM

Moe - I'm curious. How will Hillary be the next President?

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:25:31 AM

Vickie - Didn't Hillary bad mouth everyone that used to work with them and voted for Obama and trash them publicly? How is that not throwing them under the bus? Didn't she consistently say that states that she didn't win, "didn't count"? Hois that not throwing half the country under the bus? Isn't that throwing over half the country under the bus?

Again, I'm very curious how you differentiate the two

Posted by: Texas Voter | May 21, 2008 2:32:38 AM

Pure and simple..You never treat your family that way. If you will do it to them then nothing is beyond your realm of stupidity in your quest to self gratification.

Different playing field altogether when your family is not off limits to bad mouthing just to get what you want.

Posted by: Vickie | May 21, 2008 2:38:23 AM

Debrah,

So, tell me, what reason do you have to doubt Obama's patriotism?

(Ps. I dare you to say Rev. Wright)

Posted by: DemocratsUnited | May 21, 2008 2:47:59 AM

Davis:

Nope NONE of that matters..in fact I love it!!

Just desserts yummmmmm
