Robert Kennedy Jr. Says Family Members Are Wrong in Supporting Obama
May 01, 2008 6:41 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Introducing Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., in Jeffersonville, IN, Robert Kennedy Jr. had some pretty harsh words for his family members who are backing Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president.
"There are some members of my family who've decided to do the wrong thing, support Senator Obama," he said of the Democratic presidential fight.
Kennedy continued, "Part of our family is divided and our Party is divided and the reason we are divided is because we have two extraordinary candidates both running for president both who will make unbelievable presidents of this country."
Continuing his argument, Kennedy said, "but let me tell you why they’re wrong and I’m right, because I know Hillary Clinton better than they know Barack Obama," said Kennedy to a loud applause.
Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy adopted Obama as a "Son of Camelot" back in January.
Kennedy went on to speak about the attacks that Sen. Clinton received while in office saying, "she came in after enduring one of the most savage beatings of a public figure during my lifetime with people like Ken Star going spending 40 million dollars going after her relentlessly with billionaires like Richard Mellon Scaife and his whole right wing machine that sent out hundreds of millions of letters to American citizens going after her relentlessly."
Trying to connect the attacks Clinton pushed off to similar criticism President John F. Kennedy endured more than 40 years ago. "She had to endure the same kind of attacks that my father had to endure which was being called a carpetbagger when she came into New York." Kennedy pointed to Clinton's work in the upstate parts of New York to make his point saying that she"transformed those counties, which not even my father could do….."

Thank you, Mr. Kennedy, for speaking the truth.
Hillary 08!

Well, he may be smart, but he's the one who's wrong this time around!!!

Good luck to Sen. Clinton!

he is making no sense at all. why doesn't he shut up?
Posted by: kelly | May 1, 2008 6:53:53 PM
Thank you Robert Jr. Also, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Kerry Kennedy have endorsed Hillary. And unlike Michelle Obama who needs Caroline Kennedy to keep her in line during interviews, Hillary can handle even O'Reilly on her own. Is Obama ready for what Hillary went through because it's coming. Let's get ready to rumble...(that's the Republicans yelling)
Posted by: frisco girl | May 1, 2008 6:55:08 PM
Brilliant man! Go Hillary
Posted by: Jacko | May 1, 2008 6:55:16 PM
Kennedy should NOT diss his own family for supporting a candidate he doesn't support.
SHAME ON HIM!
Posted by: Stacey | May 1, 2008 6:55:20 PM
Thank you, Robert. For speaking out about what should be obvious to anyone who is well-informed. Hillary has been thoroughly vetted while Obama is still an unknown. We need a woman like Hillary in the White House. Let me correct that. We need Hillary in the White House.

Too bad he's on the losing side.
Wait a minute...I just came across another story about some superdelegate going to Obama. I'll be back.

Finally, a Kennedy who knows what he's talking about. Thank you Mr Kennedy for standing by Hillary.

This pretty much says it all - "but let me tell you why they’re wrong and I’m right, because I know Hillary Clinton better than they know Barack Obama," said Kennedy to a loud applause. "

Robert is telling the truth. Ted and Caroline haven't known Obama enough but they chose to support him. Both of them made the wrong judgment.
Posted by: kathy | May 1, 2008 7:07:03 PM
I have zero respect for Caroline or Ted, they have turned their backs on the Democrat party base. I can't wait until the bozos that backed Obama are up for re-election. Who will vote for them. Uh, nobody, the college kids will be busy doing other things. Too bad.
Posted by: kittyCat | May 1, 2008 7:09:40 PM
Remember Teddy and Caroline endorsed Obama away back in Jan, before all Obama's controversies were put into surface...
No wonder there is no more news from Teddy and Caroline talking about Obama again......
Maybe they are considering to switch their endorsement now if they have the courage...

I appreciate RFK Jr and enjoy listening to his show, "Ring of Fire" on the weekends.
Unfortunately he is backing the wrong candidate this time. Hillary Clinton, and Bill, are mired in the old school of slash and burn corporate politics. Barack Obama is the voice of the future. He has energized the youth like no one before. The youth are the ones who have to deal with this mess after all.
I would hope that Bobby can at least admit that Hillary's "gas holiday" is B.S.
Posted by: Larry'O | May 1, 2008 7:11:44 PM
I could find why they compare Obama to Kennedy. Obama is no Kennedy. Obama hid behind so many lies. Obama's speeches are an embarassment to our country.
Posted by: rockus | May 1, 2008 7:18:52 PM
Thank you Robert Kennedy, Jr. for supporting Hillary Clinton ... she is the right person this time!!
Posted by: Elinda | May 1, 2008 7:19:02 PM
Ted Kennedy and all the other liberal elites are supporting Obama because they can control him. Geez people, it's right there in front of your face, if you dare to connect the dots.
Posted by: A reader in Georgia | May 1, 2008 7:21:56 PM
It is very interesting that Ted or Caroline have never defended Obama again since all his controversies came out...at least no MSM reported it...
They are regreting now....

Robert Kenndy Jr has the courage to stand up for what he thinks is right. Ted Kennedy should take note of his qualities. At last, a Kennedy with fortitude and common sense. Jim Mannion
Posted by: James R. Mannion | May 1, 2008 7:25:41 PM
again, instead of standing up for his candidate, which I could respect, he seeks to knowck down the opponent. If your candidate is the best one, you don't have to knock the other one down. there is a reason why he is winning.
Posted by: Louis | May 1, 2008 7:27:25 PM
Actually, Ted and Caroline have been out campaigning for Obama.
Posted by: lily | May 1, 2008 7:28:32 PM
I was present at an Obama meeting in Indiana on the anniversary of the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. The person who introduced Obama declared that if Robert Kennedy were alive, he would have supported Obama. I thought that declaration involved a tremendous amount of audacity - that the speaker had absolutely no way to know know who Robert Kennedy would have supported - and to use Robert Kennedy's name and memory in that manner was morally wrong. Robert Kennedy, Jr. speaks for himself. And he is absolutely right.
Posted by: Rebecca | May 1, 2008 7:29:43 PM
Their may be backlash in Massachusetts if Obama is the nominee. Gov Patrick ( Obama's just words man) is becoming very unpopular in Massachusetts - Not that Obama wont win the state but Kennedy and Kerry ARE LOSING FAVOR AMONG DEMOCRATIC VOTERS IN THAT STATE - FAST!

It amazes me when the Hillary supporters accuse Obama of lying. Have we forgotten about Hillary and Bosnia, NAFTA, CAFTA, the gas tax holiday, etc. I could go on and on. The Clinton supporters are truly delusional.

I think Robert Kennedy Jr. is much smarter than Ted and Caroline Kennedy!!! Thank you for standing up for Hillary! I listened to his speech about American politics before, and I really believed he's an intelligent man. Today he proved even more so by endorsing Hillary!!!!!
Posted by: Cattie | May 1, 2008 7:36:47 PM
Thank you Robert Kennedy, Jr. Finally someone who makes sense!
If it wasn't for Saturday Night Live, the news media would have forced Hillary out a long time ago.
To Hillary - your support is here and growing!
Posted by: Sharon | May 1, 2008 7:37:29 PM
RFK, Jr. is out supporting his candidate.
Kerry Kennedy was on Morning Joe last week talking about her book but also throwing in support for Hillary.
Why are the supporters of Obama so silent?
Maybe they don't want the annual reunions to be awkward because they chose Obama who is simply unelectable.
Rise, Hillary Rise!!!
Posted by: LOM | May 1, 2008 7:43:58 PM
Have any of you Hillary supporters ever thought the other Kennedy's aren't supporting Hillary because they DO KNOW Hillary? If Hillary were in the White House she would make Boss Tweed look like
Abraham Lincoln. Why don't you go ask your candidate why she has requested 3 times more earmarks than any other senator in history? She is a liar and a crook. She will sell out the American people to the highest bidder. Good thing we won't get a chance to see.....because Dems have already spoken , Obama will be the nominee!! HaHa!!!

Since you can't say anything nice about Clinton, how about you give us all some specifics as to why Obama is the superior candidate. Or even why you support him?

Mr. Kennedy's father would be proud of his son for saying what he believes in this matter, and he would be proud of brother John's daughter for her better judgement.

Thank you Robert Kennedy, Jr. Eventually, your family will come around when Hillary Clinton takes office as the next President of the United States. She is clearly the best candidate, always has been.
Robert Kennedy is a good judge of character [unlike a few other people I could easily mention].
Posted by: Peggy Sue | May 1, 2008 8:32:59 PM
Wonderfully thoughtful. Unfortunately, Ted and Caroline are "bad wagoners." Each day they're being proven wrong. Ted likes Obama because he's ultra liberal. The problem with this is there is no lee way for other thought. Being liberal is great, but being too far left doesn't allow any moderate thought and doesn't allow them to be open to considering views across the aisle. Obama can say what he wants, but he spends too much time trying to convince us that no one can be right except him, that if there is opposition to him, it is not only unconscionable, but it's ridiculous to disagree with him or not allow him to have his way. Senator Clinton makes mistakes. She is sometimes disengenous. She, like he, is a politician. But I trust her more, and she's getting my support.
Posted by: Julia | May 1, 2008 8:38:59 PM
Robert Kennedy Jr has betrayed his own family and his own values, he is making very bad mistakes by supporting the old politics, Hill the Bosnian General, the Kennedies are all about innovation, change, imporvement, equal justice and equal rights. God bless America and God Bless Obama and the rest of the Kennedies. OBAMA08.
Posted by: BKMC | May 1, 2008 8:41:37 PM
I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for your canidates. But to say that someone does not have a good judge of character because they don't share your opinion just shows what kind of character some of you have. Everyone has their own opinion, it doesn't make them right or wrong. That's what's great about this country we can each have own opinion without disrespecting one another.
Posted by: ll | May 1, 2008 8:49:49 PM
I guess now that Hillary and the GOP are working together to stop the change candidate, all is forgiven? Hillary would probably make a deal with the Devil if it meant she would win (or at least he wouldn't win). You've got to wonder what evokes such animosity from the Obama haters that they would even turn against their own family if they didn't comply with the Clinton directives.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was a loser who could not win an election in MD, one of the most progressive states around. I love it when the Clintonites (closet Republicans) embrace a Kennedy to their liking but hate those who are actually Deomcrats. Give me a break. HILLARY IS A REPUBLICAN, PEOPLE. She's a Goldwater girl.

A spate of new public polls out this week confirms what we have been arguing for some time: Hillary Clinton is the strongest candidate to beat John McCain in November.
The data shows that Clinton not only outperforms Obama in head-to-head matchups, but is also stronger in the all important subcategories that serve as bellwethers for a candidate’s overall strength. In addition, new data out today in three swing states vital to Democratic prospects in November show Clinton beating McCain.
HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH MCCAIN: In a hypothetical general election match-up with McCain, Clinton wins handily (50-41) while Obama is virtually tied with McCain (46-44), according to the AP-Ipsos poll released Monday. A new poll from CBS/NYT show Clinton beating McCain by five points (48-43), while Obama ties McCain (45-45). The new Fox poll has Clinton beating McCain by one point (45-44), while Obama trails McCain by three points (43-46). And in Gallup's daily tracking poll, Clinton leads McCain by one point (46-45) while Obama trails McCain by two points (44-46).
SWING STATES: New Quinnipiac polls out today show Clinton dramatically outperforms Obama in the critical swing states of Ohio in Florida. In Ohio, Clinton beats McCain by ten points (48-38), while Obama loses to him by one point (43-44). In Florida, Clinton beats McCain by 8 (49-41), while Obama loses to him by one point (42-43). Hillary also tops McCain by 14 points in Pennsylvania (51-37), while Obama's lead over McCain is in single digits.
CLINTON BEATS MCCAIN AMONG INDEPENDENT VOTERS; OBAMA TIES HIM: The new AP poll has Clinton leading McCain among independents (50-34) while Obama is tied with him (42-42). The NBC/WSJ poll notes that Obama’s negative ratings among independents are they highest they have ever been.
CLINTON IS THE CANDIDATE VOTERS TRUST WITH THE ECONOMY: The economy is the top issue among voters and is likely to remain so through November. In the CBS/NYT poll, Hillary beat both Obama and McCain as the candidate who is talking about the economy most by a margin of 25% to Obama’s 13% and McCain’s 7%.
OBAMA UNFAVORABLES RISING QUICKLY: In the CBS/NYT poll, Obama’s unfavorables increased by ten points in the last month (24 to 34%) while his favorables decreased by four points. In the CBS/NYT poll, Obama’s unfavorables among independents rose to 31%. The Fox poll shows that in the last two months, Obama’s unfavorables have increased by nine points (33 to 42%) while his favorables decreased by seven points (54 to 47%). In the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Obama’s negative ratings increased by five points in the last month (32 to 37%) while his positive ratings decreased by three points in the last month (49 to 46%).
CLINTON STRONGEST AMONG SWING VOTING BLOCS: The new AP-Ipsos poll shows Clinton leading McCain among seniors (51-39) but has McCain BEATING Obama (49-38). She runs stronger against McCain with those under 30 than Obama does, pulling two-thirds of the young vote while Obama gets 55% against McCain. And she wins the Catholic vote against McCain (58-35) while McCain beats Obama (46-43).

Thank you, Robert Kennedy, for your insights and for backing the best and brightest candidate. You're also absolutely right about what Hillary has endured. She's been ridiculed, vilified, slammed, and slandered before and during this presidential primary. Each time, she comes back stronger, smarter, and more determined than ever to be our president. And, she will be our president.
Rise Hillary, Rise!

Once he said, he knows her very well because he worked with her for long time and he knows how good ,hard working she is.
Posted by: blue Irish | May 1, 2008 9:17:52 PM
Lee, you got that right. I live in Md and no one wanted Kathleen Kennedy, so can you believe we voted for Ehrlich the republican. After 4 years of him we had enough. And Clintons are only closet republicans when it suits them. Similiar to Hillary taking on a southern accent when she campaigns in the south. Or her claiming she has roots in how many states now. I lost track.
Posted by: lisa | May 1, 2008 9:35:22 PM
Robert Kennedy knows all about Obama.
Obama LIED about his own father! to obtain the Kennedy endorsement.
Obama went around the country telling a tale about the Kennedys bringing his father to America! He even mentioned it during his speech when the Kennedys endorsed him!
But it was all a BIG LIE! - exposed by the Washington Post last month with tons of documentation.
But we'll never see those lying Obama videos on Obamedia 24/7.
Posted by: JoseyJ | May 1, 2008 9:37:59 PM
Clinton is as far from republican as anyone could ever be. Her policy positioning is absolutely antithetical to republican dogma. She's a moderately liberal democrat. She's not ultra-left, but she's certainly not conservative democrat.
THERE"S ONLY ONE THING THE REPUBLICANS HAVE IN COMMON WITH MODERATE DEMS: NEITHER TRUSTS, OR WILL EVER VOTE, FOR OBAMA.
Many independents also feel this way.
Rise Hillary, Rise!

The DC establishment and elites support Obama - but they wouldn't be supporting him if they REALLY thought he'd "change Washington."
If they wanted it changed, they could have done it a long time ago.
The DC establishment has no love for the Clintons because the Clintons didn't attend their dinner parties and bow down to them.
But - the Obamas will - because they'll be indebted to them.

Blue Irish, the Clintons have very few loyal friends. They are all jumping ship, sort of like they've been freed by Obama. If you don't think most politicians are sick of the Clintons and their bully tactics then you know nothing about Washington

The media concealed damaging info about Obama until most of the primaries were over.
Voters in Iowa didn't know about Wright - although the YouTubes had been circulating for months.
A public has been duped into supporting Obama - the candidate chosen by the DC establishment and elites!

Well the Clintons still have the Peter Paul trial to deal with. Let's see what the media does with that.

Larry O, You state that Obama has energized the youth like never before? That's because they are energized by a person....In the past, the youth was involved in actual MOVEMENTS such as Civil Rights. There was a deep, multidimensional cause that we stood for. Yeah, I guess he, the person has energized the youth to want HIM. Elvis did the same.....
Posted by: irma | May 1, 2008 9:51:49 PM
@ lisa:
No. It's you dear, who doesn't know about Washington or about Clintons friends. Hillary's real friends are still her friends and supporters. Those pretentious opportunists, that were never really friends, have exposed themselves for what they are, and everyone in politics knows it.
Posted by: Emily | May 1, 2008 9:52:31 PM
You have got that right Josey! And there's a conglomoration of corporations that back Obama. There's also that OPRAH factor. It's funny how they try to say most of his contributions come from small donors. Yeah....most of all campaign contributions come from small donors. The big bucks come from a smaller number of LARGE donors for Obama.
Posted by: irma | May 1, 2008 9:56:24 PM
Sorry Emily you are dead wrong. We're talking politics here not hometown friends. Why do you think the supers are going against her. They were looking for an excuse not to back her. They are not well liked in Washington. They respect Bill because he is a former president but they definately don't want him back in the white house.
Posted by: lisa | May 1, 2008 9:57:33 PM
Does Obama have any other quality people in his life, or has he just been a friend magnet to the likes of REZKO & WRIGHT? I know he has Ted and Kerry; like I know what opportunist plan they were hoping for while pulling the Obama strings. Meanwhile, is there no other family in his life? Why are close people to Obama not visible? Hillary still has gradeschool and secondary school friends who speak for her. I wonder what else we don't know about O? Bet we'll find out soon.....

Irma how about the Clintons and the Peter Paul trial. What do you think.
Posted by: d | May 1, 2008 10:05:20 PM
When Rev. Wright made fun of President Kennedy at the NAACP meeting on Sunday in Detroit I hoped that CK and TK would refute that, but they didn't.
Posted by: grace | May 1, 2008 10:08:33 PM
Ted, Caroline and Ethel Kennedy are basing their decisions on nostalgianot reality. Obama "reminds" them of RFK or JKF. Senator Obama has a knack for doing this, but he is not JFK or RFK. Senator Obama is a con. Senator Obama is not accomplished. As for helping the poor and disenfranchised, take a look at the slums owned by his buddy Rezko. Nine of those buildings were in his state district. Those buildings went without heat and Obama "didn't know". Just like Senator Obama slept through 20 years of Rev. Wright's sermons and just heard them for the first time this week.
Posted by: Linda C | May 1, 2008 10:16:18 PM
@ lisa: I'm not going to further argue on this site, but you honestly don't know what you're talking about here. Albeit one or two of the supers committed to Hillary, virtually all are still with her.
In the real world of politics, the wind blows, and the opportunists blow the way of their own narcissistic agenda. The people who really do know Hillary Clinton respect and appreciate her. They know she's not perfect, but they also know she's one of the smartest and most dedicated public servants around.
I realize you're an Obama supporter, and I don't begrudge you that. I'm happy you've found in him something positive, but Hillary isn't a "closet republican," and the supers don't hate her.

Emily, I didn't think we were arguing, only having a debate. And yes I do know what I'm talking about. I know how politics works here. I know a lot of the politicians because my husband and I go to many political funtions in DC. I am only speaking the truth. The Clintons are not well liked because of what happened to Bill. He disgraced the party and they absolutely don't want the Clintons back in the white house. Some have even been afraid of speaking out against them, but this is what we are seeing now. They are leaving her. No superdelegates have left Obama. In fact more are leaving Hillary.

I love how Obama supporters automatically say Robert Kennedy Jr picked the wrong candidate. I would like any of them to pick something Obama has done besides stand in a crowd and say he wants change. If anyone's judgement should come into play its his. If he becomes the Democratic candidate you can pretty much rest assured another Republican will be put in office.
Go Hillary. Thank you Robert Kennedy Jr, Kathleen Townsend and Kerry Kennedy for picking the right candidate.

Lisa, the problem with your story is that we are supposed to believe that people who are most likely guilty of adultry themselves, are judging Bill for his. PALEESE. That in itself tells me NO WAY do you know what is going on in DC. I KNOW......They are all politicians. If you were really "around" on the scene, you would see what temptations in the guise of "favors" are litterally thrust on these people. We need their intelligence, goals and plans, but we don't have to marry them, thank goodness.

For a brief time in 1968 when I was in college in Nebraska, I campaigned for Senator Robt. Kennedy when he was running in the democratic primaries in Nebraska. I also met him in a hotel lobby in Omaha, Nb. A friend of mine and I were the only two people left in the lobby besides Sen. Kennedy and his retinue when they went through late at night.
The moment of that brief shaking of hands of Sen. Kennedy is forever imprinted in my mind's eye. I have not felt that way about a presidential candidate since then until Bill Clinton ran for president (although I've never met him) and now Senator Clinton. In fact I'm more involved in Sen. Clinton's campaign than I was in her husband's.
In my mind, Sen. Clinton is the heir to RFK's legacy. Both went on to be elected senators from New York after their relatives were no longer in office. Clinton is a fighter and tough like RFK was during his years as attorney general under his brother's administration. I think the democratic party would have went on a very different path had RFK lived. I'm certain he would have been the democratic nominee in l968 and would have went on to win the presidency.
Now we have Hillary and it's no accident that 3 of RFK's children are staunch supporters of her.

Lisa wrote>>>Why do you think the supers are going against her.
Lisa, once again - the DC establishment and elites support Obama.
Think about it - if they really thought Obama would "change Washington" do you really think they'd be supporting him?
If they wanted to "change Washington" they could have done it long ago!
The Clintons didn't kow tow to the DC establishment and attend their dinner parties where the deals and decisions are made - BEFORE reps go to the House and Senate floors.
Obama would be an excellent tool for the elites - and he will do whatever they say.

Robert Kennedy's son, Robert, Jr., has followed his father's pursuit in life to help make the lives of others better. He and his sisters, Kathleen and Kerry, recognize the purpose-driven life of Hillary Clinton as in sync with the issues their father fought for in his life. They are looking at the soul and life and experiences, not merely a Camelot image of a young man with lofty words (many not even his own). How can he even compare to John Kennedy who had fought heroically in World War II, studied world history, served many years in the Senate. Obama in no way measures up to that. He is so inexperienced and lacking in knowledge of the issues. He is green.
I value the wisdom of Robert Kennedy and his son. They have spoken from their hearts and their good minds.

Is this really important? Let's pretend we can all make up our own minds regardless of how the Kennedy family divvies things up. OK? Same with all the other endorsers. Time to cast votes and count delegates. May the best candidate win.

Josey for the last time you don't get it. It's not about the elites or Obama. It's about Bill Clinton disgracing the party, the white house and our country. They do not want the Clintons back in the white house....period. So that is why they are backing Obama.

All the speculation and rancor amongst Obama and Clinton supporters over super delegates, and their role in choosing a nominee, should consider these facts.
First, there would be NO need for super delegates for ANY reason if they simply were to mimic who the pledged delegates voted for. Clearly, committed super delegates DO NOT follow the pledged delegates in many state primaries.
Second point, in October, before primaries started, the picture was different than in January; and thus the picture is different in April. Super delegates of both camps are clearly improperly using their delegate positions to politically gain for their chosen candidate. Understandable, but it skews their autonomy.
Third, the fact is, many voters in early primaries cannot change their vote in April either to support Obama OR Clinton. Well publicized super delegates who were Clinton supporters were covered by media as they jumped ship to support Obama in the early primaries; but what says they can’t change again. How is that any more unfair than changing in the first place? Only the super delegates can publicly support someone in October, publicly change their mind in January and still not be committed to vote until the convention.
The super delegates JOB is to look at the complete picture, at the end of all the primaries, to decide the candidate best able to represent the party in the GENERAL election. At this point, both candidates have about a third of the super delegates as “supporters”.
Thanks to the hyper-active media, we have a running tally of super delegates by the min
