About 100 Protest McCain in California
June 24, 2008 12:55 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell and James Gerber Report: The largest assemblage of protestors to gather at a McCain event this election cycle greeted the Arizona Republican this morning in Santa Barbara, California.
The group of about 100, largely assembled to protest McCain’s environmental policies, awaited him outside the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, where McCain is set to deliver remarks and receive a briefing on the environment.
Watch video of the protest HERE.
McCain has received flack in recent days for reversing his position on U.S. off-shore oil drilling. The presumptive Republican nominee has long opposed it but switched positions this month, citing the need for relief from high gas-prices for American families.
Santa Barbara residents are particularly sensitive to the issue of off-shore drilling. An oil spill off the city's coastline in 1969 sparked intense protests and landmark legislation.
Chants of "no new drilling" could be heard, as well as a guy on a bullhorn talking about how "shortsighted" McCain’s plan to drill for more oil is.
One sign read: "McCain: Some Nerve. Coming here to try to sell Earth-desecrating policies to us!!!"
There were also some protesters holding signs about McCain's anti-abortion position, and one sign read: "Abstinence vows break more easily than condoms."
Once he got past the throng, McCain spoke about the environment. In his speech he talked, among other things, about longer term solutions for getting the country off of fossil fuels. He acknowledged, as he frequently does, that he believes climate change is real and needs to be addressed.
"We now know that fossil fuel emissions, by retaining heat within the atmosphere, threaten disastrous changes in climate," McCain said. "No challenge of energy is to be taken lightly, and least of all the need to avoid the consequences of global warming."
McCain has spent the last several weeks talking about energy and the environment, promising that if elected, he would propose a $300 million prize for the development a car battery that weans America off oil.

Thankfully there are some in California who are protesting McCain, as goofy as California is, had they not protested I would have had concerns about continuing to support McCain. Knowing many in California are upset with McCain validates that he is likely the most stable, levelheaded and best candidate for America. Thank you California for illustrating who clear-thinking people should be voting for.

johr...if you think the off-shore drilling will fix the gas crisis then you are loonier that McCain...

Oil drilling goes on all around us. Nuclear waste is all around us. We are killing the atmosphere with all our gas emissions and pollution. We need a comprehensive plan to become free of foreign oil, or we will suffer the dire consequences. Our entire lives are connected to the use of energy. We need a long-term plan. Right now, we need a short-term plan. People need help now. McCain understands the entire picture. Currently, we count on safety measures in producing nuclear enery and drilling for oil. We can drill carefully in the right places for more oil to become independent of foreign sources. At the same time, we need a wise national policy to address the issues of energy while protecting the environment. We must do this. John McCain fully understands what we need to do, and how to do it.

My goodness this guy can't seem to make up his mind from one day to the next...what next? Is there a requirement to have a psychiatric eval to be President. I withdraw that question...there couldn't be...otherwise Bush wouldn't have been elected :-)

Tran Trong Duyet a McCain enthusiast: "If I was American, I would vote for him."
The former head of the Hoa Lo prison salutes McCain for his efforts to restore relations between the U.S. and Vietnam, but is still very on-message in a Communist sort of way.
"But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him," Duyet told the Beeb. "We never tortured any prisoners."

georgia: Obama's plan is to stop the Enron Loopholes. McCain is against it. Now, the specialist are saying if these loopholes would be closed then we will see gas go down 30% to 50% OVERNIGHT. Now you want to tell me who is look at the short and long term of this gas issue.

The GOP spins the results in Iraq to boost appeal for their brand of politics when in reality Iraq is still a long ways away from a self sustained government and military. The GOA report contradicts the Pentagon report released yesterday praising the surge and the main media outlets (ABC, CBS, NBC and FIXED News) are playing dumb. Here is a piece of the GOA report. "The administration lacks an updated and comprehensive Iraq strategy to move beyond the "surge" of combat troops President Bush launched in January 2007 as an 18-month effort to curtail violence and build Iraqi democracy, government investigators said yesterday. While agreeing with the administration that violence has decreased sharply, a report released yesterday by the Government Accountability Office concluded that many other goals Bush outlined a year and a half ago in the "New Way Forward" strategy remain unmet."

nothing like a communist endorsement lol

peoples prez
and check this out on iraq as they say its sobering news
The Government Accountability Office delivered on Monday what was, in many ways, a sobering report on the current situation in Iraq. Agreeing that levels of violence in the war have decreased sharply, the authors nevertheless concluded that many of the Bush administration's "surge" priorities had so far been unmet.
According to the GAO, the percentage of Iraqi units "capable of performing operations without U.S. assistance" remains roughly 10 percent. Thus, while the number of forces has risen by more than 150,000, the actual assistance that American troops are receiving is far more negligible. Adding salt to the wound, the GAO notes: "Since 2003, the United States has provided more than $20 billion to develop Iraqi security forces."
The number of trained Iraqi security forces may overstate the number of troops present for duty. According to DOD, the number of trained troops includes personnel who are deceased or absent without leave. For example, DOD reported that approximately 24,500 soldiers were dropped from the Iraqi Army rolls in 2007 because they deserted or were absent without leave. However, these troops are still counted in trained numbers. An April 2008 Special Inspector General for Iraqi Reconstruction report confirmed that a substantial number of Iraqi personnel still on the payroll were not present for duty for various reasons, such as being on leave, absent without leave, injured, or killed.
Although Iraqi security forces have grown in number and many are leading counterinsurgency operations, MNH-1 assessments of their readiness levels show limited improvements... While 65 percent of the Iraqi units were in the lead in counterinsurgency operations as of March 2008, the number of Iraqi army battalions rated at the highest readiness level accounts for less than 10 percent of the total number of Iraqi army battalions.

See these liberals can't never show any respect to anyone. What is there to protest?? he's not the president yet so if you don't like his policies, don't vote for him. Do you see Republicans protest against obama on his taxing policy?? no, because they are much more of gentlemen then disgraced liberals. The gas price is the most expensive in California, so when talk about gas price, we should just ignore California. and heck, let them pay the high price. Oh wait, but typical liberals don't want to change anything but will always complaint. You don't want to drill, you don't want wind energy in Massaschusett because it blocks the view of the ocean. what the heck do you do want to do then??? Oh, yeah, sit there and complain!!! and being selfish. Just because you don't like it and it may effect you, you rather let the rest of the nation suffer. And then when there's something that benefit liberals, you want to force others to go along with it; like univeral healthcare and the taxing system that obama proposed. What a disgrace!!!
DRILL HERE!! DRILL NOW!!! WWW.AMERICANSOLUTIONS.COM
MCCAIN 2008!!!

These are the true village idiots who have left their respective villages to gather to shout to world their ignorance. OK, you've made pathetic fools of yourselves now you can go back to your villages and resume your occupations. Their signs should read "No Jobs, No Cars, No Drill"

Elect McCain and enjoy the PAIN...
Posted by: Buddy | Jun 24, 2008 1:50:31 PM
oh and thats after 20 billion dollars taht WE have spent... meanwhile oil per barrel is what? and the iraqis have contributed how much of their own money to this war?
oh wait exxon/mobil, shell, BP, and 2 other american oil companies are now getting unlimited contracts from iraq for oil...
LOL
and not only do they have 60 million acres of off shore drilling opened to them to start drilling RIGHT NOW (if its not a pander and a way to really offset these prices then start drilling in the alloted space)
they still hold off, hoping that they can gain access to every coastline... because once the measure is passed everyone...
even if your state says no way... that opens up the oil lobbyists to start working on your governors, and though some may say they are against it now... they wont be in power forever...
im sick of the republicans and the oil companies running stuff and controlling us americans
MCCAIN CRAWL BACK IN YOUR BOX THE SUN IS ABOUT TO RISE YOU VAMPIRIC SUCCUBUS

oh Joe - obama not only flip-flop but he got lies along with flip-flop. he forgoes public finance because mccain and GOP take all the money from lobbyists and because the so-called 527??? Not only he flip flop on public finance but the GOP and McCain has less than 1% from PAC and the only outside organization is moveon.org who's attacking mccain.
I guess the reason for mccain to change his position is for the American people. and obama flip flop with lies along the side for his own self. But anyone can always see who LOVE America.
McCain 2008!!

The news media didn't report this:
Protesters against Obama:
Elian Gonzalez saga could haunt Obama
Eight years after the furor over the repatriation of Elian Gonzalez to Cuba possibly cost Al Gore the state of Florida in his 537-vote loss to George W. Bush, the international custody saga has returned to haunt another Democratic presidential nominee: Barack Obama.
Having two top advisers who played key roles in the episode — Greg Craig, who represented Gonzalez's father in Cuba, and Eric Holder, then a Clinton administration deputy attorney general when federal agents stormed the Miami home of Gonzalez’s relatives to remove the then-6-year-old and return him to Cuba — Obama now finds himself on the wrong side of an emotional issue in a battleground state.
The wound reopened again last week after Gonzalez returned to the headlines in South Florida following a report in a Cuban communist youth newspaper that he has joined Cuba’s Young Communist Union.
Miami-based Republican political consultant Ana Navarro said the stature of Holder and Craig in the Obama campaign “shows a tone-deafness to the Cuban American community's concerns.”
“Elian Gonzalez cost Al Gore Florida and the presidency,” she added.
Indeed, in a display of lingering resentment, Obama’s speech before the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami last weekend was picketed by several dozen activists protesting Craig, who serves as a foreign policy adviser to Obama, and Holder, who is a legal adviser and a member of the Illinois senator’s vice presidential search committee.
