Bill Clinton: 'This May Be the Last Day I'm Ever Involved in a Campaign of This Kind'

Share

June 02, 2008 12:48 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: Speaking to a crowd in Milbank, SD former President Bill Clinton admitted that today could be the last time he has such an active role in presidential politics.

"I want to say also that this may be the last day I'm ever involved in a campaign of this kind. I thought I was out of politics, 'til Hillary decided to run. But it has been, one of the greatest honors of my life to go around and campaign for her for president," said Clinton as he began his speech.

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

It was certainly not a long thought - nor something he seemed to want to dwell on. But for a man who has rarely shown even an inkling of defeat in the past year, even uttering the words says a lot.

It's sad to see how Howard Dean ruined this primary. Democratic party resembles communist party with super eliteS deciding the fate of the nation.

Obamas is not ready to lead, he is too rookie and full of Gaffes....visit this blog that is dedicated to Obamas Gaffe machine

Don't be Sad, Bill!
You could always Open Up a Hooters

You could go back to making nasty
partisan speeches at radical colleges
and get paid millions for that acid
tongue of yours! Adios, Bill!

Makes people wonder how much longer it will take for them to realize that they LOST! Goodbye and good riddance to the WORST political couple on our planet! The rotten tactics used against an opponent of your own party will go down in history. The excuses they have had to make all during this campaign are disgusting and so many of us can't wait for them to leave - leave already!

Not so fast. I don't interpret it as you do. I think he is saying he will not campaign for Obama. Good for him. Hillary will win as an independent. Hillary supporters will not be maneuvered into the corrupt Democratic fold.

Bravo, now let's get on with the general election and uniting the democratic party. This is very disturbing to most Americans. Your campaign has been very strong but to keep threatening to bring the results of the DNC to yet another process is NOT in the best interest of the American people. I think doing so will result in the complete destruction of the Clinton era.

This is campaign no longer a reasonable fight it has become nasty and older women are fighting a battle that is noble, but to keep suggesting that someone is stealing votes for the Clinton's is totally absurd, not to mention dividing the democratic party along gender, etchnicity and religious lines.

The current DNC committee was built by Bill Clinton. Time to end this nasty battle.

Super delegates please step up and vote one way or the other.

Like a race horse that breaks it's leg they have to put down as a humane thing to do??? Something has got to give TUESDAY June 3rd. I switched my vote from Clinton to support OBAMA 2008.

Frieda,

Howard Dean did not make the rules of the Democratic primary race!

Where do you people get this stuff?

I'm not interested in unity with Obama and that Chicago southside mob he calls a church.

Or his Syrian Iraqi Muslim poltical godfathers Rezko and Auchi, who still own his mansion grounds.

Or unity with his flag stomping bombing Marxist buddy Ayers.

Or unity with his Black Panthers wife Michelle. Can't wait for that video to come out.

Or unity with his Excelon puppet master Axelrod.

Nope, just not interested in unity with that at all.

In every presidential election they have won, the Democrats have solidified their historic link to white workers, not dismissed them. Obama and the champions of a new party coalition appear to think that everything has suddenly changed, simply because of the force of their own desires. In any event, Obama had shown no ability thus far to attract the one constituency that has always spelled the difference between victory and defeat for the Democratic Party. The party must now decide whether to go along with Obama and renounce its own heritage -- and tempt the political fates.

Posted by: david from texas | Jun 2, 2008 1:10:51 PM

Obama will never win, too bad McCain will win.

Posted by: CHANGE MAN | Jun 2, 2008 1:10:55 PM

The Barack Obama campaign and its sympathizers have begun to articulate much more clearly what they mean by their vague slogan of "change" - nothing less than usurping the historic Democratic Party, dating back to the age of Andrew Jackson, by rejecting its historic electoral core: white workers and rural dwellers in the Middle Atlantic and border states.

Without a majority of those voters, the Democrats have, since the party's inception in the 1820s, been incapable of winning the presidency. The Obama advocates declare, though, that we have entered an entirely new political era. It is not only possible but also desirable, they say, for Democrats to win by turning away from those whom "progressive" pundits and bloggers disdain variously as "Nascar man," "uneducated," "low information" whites, "rubes, fools, and hate-mongers" who live in the nation's "shitholes."

Having attempted, with the aid of a complicit news media, to brand Hillary Clinton as a racist -- by flinging charges that, as the historian Michael Lind has shown, belong "in black helicopter/grassy knoll territory," Obama's supporters now fiercely claim that Clinton's white working class following is also essentially racist. Favoring the buzzword language of the academic left, tinged by persistent, discredited New Left and black nationalist theories about working-class "white skin privilege," a vote against Obama has become, according to his fervent followers, "a vote for whiteness."

Posted by: david from texas | Jun 2, 2008 1:11:27 PM

It has become increasingly apparent that it is too much to hope for that Clinton and her supporters would simply "get real."

I don't see Obama winning the GE. He will not have Clinton's supporters votes...17+million. His nomination will be short-lived. Sorry, Clinton controls this nomination...without her, Obama is toast!

I am interested in the tone of the Clinton campaign right now. Some of the campaign are still making very bullish noises but then every now and again someone says something along these lines. I think the Clinton campaign does know its losing but wants to end strongly for whatever reason. Whether its to give her more leverage for the VP slot or to launch a future run I don't know.

I do wonder mind why she seems prepared to risk all for 2008. Does she have private polling that shows Obama winning '08 and therefore knows she isn't going to get to run until 2016, when she would be nearing on 70, so perhaps she realises this is her one shot?

Posted by: markymark | Jun 2, 2008 1:20:39 PM

It's time for Obama. Clinton era was great. But it's time for change. All the intelligent people (Warren Buffet, Rupert Murdoch ..) have realized it along with million of Americans. McCain has made too many compromises in senate. He is a great guy too. Hillary would have become a another good president with a lots of new ideas. Not sure if she could muster 60 votes in senate to get anything done. Obama will bring great things to America. I am convinced. God bless America.

Just like it took the Florida recount fiasco to show the nation how messed up the mechanics of voting were, I hope this primary season shows the Dems how messed up their selection process is.
Dems need to fix this primary mess before the next election cycle!!

Bill,

Did your wife get the memo?

Posted by: Monica | Jun 2, 2008 1:21:00 PM

THIS IS CALLED FOOD FOR THE REPUBLICANS - In his statement about leaving the church Obama defended it, said it was not anti-white or anti-American, and said he was doing it to protect the church from further scrutingy. No apology, no rejection. So how does this “solve his problem”?

Thank you Bill Clinton for NOT CAMPAIGNING FOR BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. I hope that we Hillary Clinton supporters can convince her to not campaign or support obama as well.
Howard Dean has taken the DNC and destroyed the very word "democracy" by pushing the nomination for obama. In my book this means that the DNC has stole the nomination from Clinton. I will not vote for obama if he is nominated. My vote will go to John McCain. Never obama.
And I don't give a DIDDLY what you obama followers call this. You cannot dictate to me how to vote just because you follow the cult leader. So just get the heck out of my way. I'll vote for JOHN McCAIN - never obama.

How can you people say mccain will win. The guy is OLD. JOhn Murtha the real "Straight-Talker" said that being president is no job for an OLD guy. The guy will be dragging loooong bush coattails. I thought it was really funny that no cameras were allowed in for the bush/mccain fundraiser. Voters will realize that this country can NOT afford another bush term. Obama 2008 will be Great!!!

Posted by: pt | Jun 2, 2008 1:24:00 PM

Good to see that the Clintons are starting to see the reality of the situation. They lost the nomination. Now they must get over their own egos and help Barack Obama defeat the 3rd term of George W. Bush (AKA McCain.)

Posted by: Marvin Marks | Jun 2, 2008 1:24:06 PM

Well, there's really nothing of surprise here. In a totally unveiled fashion, Slick is letting everybody know that he has no intention of actually campaigning for Obama. This, of course, goes against what he's stated on many, many occasions -- that both he and HRC would campaign vigorously for whoever the Democratic nominee would be. I guess what he should have said is that he would campaign for whoever the candidate would be, as long as that candidate's last name was Clinton. As with everything else Slick and HRC have done in this campaign, they have pretty much acted according to the Clinton script.

Posted by: J. T. Bigglesworth | Jun 2, 2008 1:24:13 PM

Jack: If you are correct and Obama does not win the GE, it will be because of HRC and her supporters who are more concerned with her personal gain, and putting a 'woman' in the WH than they are in defeating the Republicans. I cannot and will not believe that HRC will turn her back on her principles (you know, the ones she's been claiming to stay in the race to preserve). To do so is to hand the elction to the Republicans. When all is said and done, the goal should be to oust the current 'regime', not perpetuate it by vindictiveness.

Posted by: Lindy | Jun 2, 2008 1:24:48 PM

Lou...you're a jerk....I hope you loose your home, your kids end up in Iraq, and you cannot afford to drive your car!
You are NOT a Dem if you would do that. And the reason Hillary is loosong is her own selfishness in this race. her campaign is a shambles.

The world of bias, bigotry and divisiveness is very large in this country. We are on stage at this very moment to see if we have learned from the past (ours, other countries, etc) that we are more alike than we are different, and that in transcending those differences, we can bring about healing: local and global. It saddens me that we have grown so little over such a long time.

Posted by: Name withheld | Jun 2, 2008 1:25:41 PM

Lindy...well said

Posted by: newera | Jun 2, 2008 1:25:42 PM

Amen formerhillary. Do I really want a President with no plan on how to wage a campaign after 2/5? We already have a President who has no long-term strategic thought and we don't need another.

Hillary lost for one reason only, her candidacy was flawed in its design and execution. When they found an approach that worked, it was too late. She did not lose because she's a woman.

Posted by: Richard McCabe | Jun 2, 2008 1:26:06 PM

Did you relay that message to your wife?

Posted by: PMILLER | Jun 2, 2008 1:26:26 PM

When you use the word "may", your sentence does not mean anything. Eight years of painful waiting, 3,000 days of manipulative planning...all are in vain now. But you still have plenty of beautiful stuff out there. Unless Hillary has more time to watch you now.

Posted by: mampang | Jun 2, 2008 1:26:34 PM

I don't believe that Hillary or Bill will campaign for Obama. They don't have it in them, despite her talk of unity when it's over. They will be in Martha's Vineyard.

you are wrong ... Obama never had a plan he will be humiliated weighed measured and destroyed in November!

Posted by: dem38 | Jun 2, 2008 1:27:40 PM

It's no coincidence that the dirtier and uglier Hillary got in this campaign the more the super delegates flocked to Obama.

Posted by: Bison | Jun 2, 2008 1:27:47 PM

Lou how has the DNC stolen this from Hillary. It was never hers to begin with. Although she would argue with me about that. Half the country supports Obama. And she ran a bad campaign. And I honestly don't care how you vote. Just don't blame this on the DNC.

Posted by: erin | Jun 2, 2008 1:27:47 PM

I would love to see how many millions the Clintons make off this failed race for the nomination! This was never about winning for them it was all about the book deals, speaking engagements and launching their daughter into politics. For the Hillary fans that don't believe it...stayed tuned. And be prepared to apologize when you see the Clinton's tax return next year, the books they write, and last but not least Lil' Clinton's run for the Senate.

Posted by: How Many Millions | Jun 2, 2008 1:27:51 PM

What I find amusing is that the Obamabots just automatcally think this clown, Obama, will actually become President! Obamabots, you are so dillusional.......the GOP loves what has happened to the Democratic party, the division, the fighting, the backbiting.....I think it's great! Regardless if Hillary is the nominee or Sodama, McCain will prevail in November. Lets see, as an American, would I be more inclined to vote for a proven war hero, who has served our country with fortitude, honor, and respect.....or, would I support a Muslim raised racist, who actually hates America, has never served a day in the armed forces, who lies and who has a wife that admittedly in public said she hates America. Sorry, Obamabots, its over......Obama will NEVER become President. McCain 08!

I am reregistering on Wed. And I know many others who are leaving the democratic party. Obama frightens me as he is inexperienced and what little I know about him is not good. I'm not so easily swayed. I am particularly upset with the way Obama supporters and the liberal media have treated the Clintons. Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents the democrats have had in decades, even with all his flaws. Hillary is the stronger candidate right now and has won the majority of the democratic vote. This is a tragic, turning point in time for the democratis. Enjoy your defeat!

Posted by: Susan | Jun 2, 2008 1:35:04 PM

If Hillary can't get a majority of her own party, she's not going to get a majority of the general public. Period.

And the stuff she and Bill have done since leaving the WH is just NOW beginning to be vetted by the MSM (now that the press is no longer intimidated by another Clinton presidency).

Hillary's campaign against a virtual unknown was a disaster. What makes any rational person think that she'd win over an established brand like McCain?

Hillary's only hope now is based on inflaming her supporters passions and not in anything rational or reasonable. (And she's shown us that's how she'd govern.)

Hillary supporters, it's time to get real. Hillary (with a lot of help from you) has turned even MORE of the electorate against her and so has done this to HERSELF.

The race is done. The winner's known. And good riddance to the losers!

1) McCain did serve honorably. For that, i commend him. However, that was DECADES ago. His honor doesn't disappear for that service, but his ideology TODAY is what counts. He is in favor of all the Bush policies which has destroyed our nation economically and our standing in the world is extremely damaged due to these Bush policies that MCCAIN is in favor of. Based on this, he is NOT the choice of Americans today.

2) Obama is not a Muslim. He was NOT raised a Muslim. In fact, there's not one shred of evidence that shows he was raised a Muslim. In fact, all evidence points to being raised agnostic and he "found" Jesus on his own later in life. So, that would make him a CHRISTIAN.

3) Sodoma? huh? Are you saying he's like Saddam by putting their names together? How old are you? 3?

4) Obama? a racist? LOL... riiight... have you even heard ANYTHING he said? Oh wait, you're going to try to pinpoint what the reverends say and equate that to Obama... riiight... Because they all share the same brain right? LOL. There is not ONE thing that Obama said that was outright racist... ever.

5) His wife said that she HATES America? Another flat out LIE. Why must you republicans resort to LYING? Please send me a link to anywhere that says this outright?

I could go on, but i think this picks apart your post.

Amazing we have this level of idiocy in the US who are part of the voting public.

VOTE ON THE ISSUES, not these supposed "Scandals" that are media manufactured.

Hillary lost. More comments trying to somehow blame it on Obama. Whatever.

For people who claim to be such "centrist Democrats" and "Reagan Democrats" you Clinton supporters sure have a lot of trouble just assuming responsibility.

Face it: she lost. And if you thought she was going to win and were so wrong, what makes you think you're not wrong about Obama losing in the Fall again? No, no, I know this time you're REALLY SURE you're right. Right?

For those that don't know John McCain's campaign has hired a room full of basement dwellers to troll these news threads and basically make intelligent political discourse imposable. You can tell who they are because, well, they sound like racist nut jobs!

Don't let the door hit you on the back side on the way out the door.

Al in SF: You really think that what Murdoch and Buffet said was supporting Obama? What they did was to merely face the unfortunate reality that Obama was this season's rockstar. If you think Murdoch is supporting Obama, you really need to wake up!

I have a question: Where do you think the Clintons will go when this is done? They almost HAVE to put in at least what passes as an effort for the party, or they give up all their vouchers and favors. She will be returning to her Senate seat, and if she wants ANY support in the future, she will have to play some ball, too. Now, you voters can hold grudges and blurt out whatever you like now, but if your heart is really telling you that you can't pick someone you may not like, but intends to do 95% of the same things that your choice would have done; and you will select someone who has NO intention to address 80% of the things that really effect you...I am glad that my passport is current.

On to Denver! You guys are so inspirational and Hillary will win it all, because of your focus and heart. She's the leader we need and the leader America deserves. We're witnessing a nomination theft between Obama, the DNC and the MSM. Hillary... all the way to the White House as President!!!!

David From Texas
In every presidential election they have won, the Democrats have solidified their historic link to white workers, not dismissed them.
---------------------------
Really? Who won the the "white workers" when Bill Clinton was elected?

HINT: It wasn't Bill Clinton.

So much for historic links.

Actually, if it weren't for Ross Perot (a Republican version of Hillary Clinton), Bill would have never been President.

And it was the Afrian American community that got Clinton elected - not the "white worker". Unfortunately, Bill must have forgoten that small fact during Hillary's campaign. Hillary would have NEVER drawn the votes from that demographic that Barack does.

States like WV and KY will go red. Rednecks and racist vote Republican - or Hillary in the democratic primary.

Goodby and good riddance. We knew you weren't going to be a team player and help campaign for Obama and based on what you did for Hillary, it is a blessing in disquise. I am sure you will be occupied with your investments in Dubai and other personal matters, which shall remain undisclosed as you have in the past. Next book "Clintons, Axis of evil"

I hope former Pres. Bill Clinton will take back his words.

You are very respected as one of the elders in the Party, and you are still the member.

Your words are very discouraging especially to those who put the Party first, and personal
