Bush Tells British Paper He Regrets War Legacy
June 10, 2008 8:01 PM
ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Across the pond for a Europe farewell tour, President Bush spoke candidly about his legacy, acknowledging mistakes in handling the Iraq war. Bush told the British newspaper, The Times, he regrets the bitter division over the Iraq war and -- rather remarkably -- admitted his words in the lead up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq did not help unite the country behind the effort.
The paper writes that the president "expressed regret at the bitter divisions over the war and said that he was troubled about how his country had been misunderstood."
Bush told the paper, "I think that in retrospect I could have used a different tone, a different rhetoric." Bush also admitted that some of his strong phrases like "bring them on" or in general his "Cowboy Talk" -- as he once referred to it in an ABC News' interview with George Stephanopoulos -- affected the perception of the U.S. around the world. Those phrases, Bush said, according to the paper," indicated to people that I was, you know not a man of peace."
Read the complete "Times" story HERE.
On presidential politics, as he has done before, Bush acknowledged to the Times that Sen. Barack Obama's nomination for president by the Democratic Party is statement of how far American has come. Warm feeling aside, Bush subtly went after Obama on trade. The Illinois Senator supports renegotiating NAFTA and opposes free trade agreements with Colombia and Korea.
Said Bush,"There is concern about protectionism and economic nationalism. " He added,"Leaders recognize now is the time to get ahead of this issue before it becomes engrained in the political systems of our respective countries." Bush also shared concern that Obama would be soft in challenging Iran's nuclear ambitions

unfortunately, if bush changed his rhetoric he still would have lied and pushed through his illegal policies and fake war based on lies... his 'tone' reflected his decisions... this is just plain ol' fact, so what bush is saying today is just more crap... all he's admitting to was not being nicer about how he lied!

Obama wants to bring “hope” and “change” to America because he and his far left America hating buddies of long standing think America is a bad place and needs to be changed into their utopian vision of a socialist society. A socialist society of less prosperity for all, more hate and rage against America and the traditional values of the middle class, and an America that has replaced the stars and stripes with the white flag of defeat, been disarmed and rendered helpless to defend herself or her allies against attack.OBAMA: "We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said."That's not leadership. That's not going to happen," he added, if that’s the type of “change you can believe in” and YOU WANT TO BRING PROSPERITY DOWN A NOTCH OR TWO, AND TRIIPLE GAS AND FOOD COSTS vote Obama. OBAMA: “ White folks greed runs a world in needs” Sounds a lot like the Black liberation theology teachings of the Rev. Wright’s(“God D### America”) Trinty chruch that Obama was a member of for twenty years. If that’s the type of “change you can belive in” and you want MORE RACIST, ANTI-SEMITIC AND HATE AMERICA TRUE BELIEVERS AND THEIR ILK IN THE SEATS OF POWER IN GOVERNMENT RUNNING YOUR LIVES AND DESTROYING THE TRADITIONAL VALUES OF THE MIDDLE CLASS INCLUDING: FREE SPEECH AND THE "RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS" vote ObamaOBAMA: "Iran Does Not Impose a Threat to the US" and wants to help pay for his top heavy and corrupt government boondoggles by disarming the military If that’s the type of “change you can believe in” and you want AN AMERICA THAT HAS REPLACED THE STARS AND STRIPES WITH THE WHITE FLAG OF DEFEAT , BEEN DISARMED AND RENDERED HELPLESS TO DEFEND HERSELF AGAINST ATTACK , vote Obama

Why a vote for Obama may lead to more war and deaths, not less. If Obama had got his way and Saddam was still in power the West would be dealing with TWO major middle eastern powers on the brink or aleady in possesion of nuclear weapons and thumbing their nose at the US. The facts on the ground now in Iraq is that the surge has been successful and the US is winning the war in Iraq. That is why Obama's plan of pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory in Iraq is so idiotic. Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq but if the USA retreats and turns Iraq over to them, Al Qaeda will have access to Iraq's large oil reserves and thus the means and opportunity to attack us and attack us hard. Our Middle Eastern allies will have no reason to trust our word and abandon us. Not to mention the boost a withdrawal from Iraq will give to Iran, Syria and Hamas. Think WWIII, Obama and his supporters scoff at the threat Al Qaeda and the rest of their ilk poses to the security of the US and future of the Western World, If Obama is elected his defeatist policies will put us all at more risk of another 9/11 attack and even worse the blow up the middle east which will mean more will die, just like what happened in WWII when people thought Hitler could be appeased and were wrong, very wrong. Whats more, the killing fields of cambodia could be played out again in Iraq by Al Qaeda, Only this time the people murdered could be the very people that risked their lives to support the US. Question, if Obama wins, can you sleep well at night if you get what you want and this happens? I hope not.

President Bush did not lie about the reasons behind invading Iraq. Every intelligence agency in the world thought Saddam had WMDs. Records from Saddam's files now show Saddam's Generals even believed Saddam had WMDs. The US is winning in Iraq and if Obama has his way and pulls the US troops out of Iraq, their comrades will have given their lives for nothing and the lives of the people of Iraq who risked their lives to support the US will be in be at risk.

earthisnotflat, the reason gas prices have increased is because of the Dems like you who refuse to allow oil companies to drill for oil here on our own soil and to build new refineries. In case you you are not aware of it, President Bush has been trying for the last 8 years to get congress to approve drilling of oil here and the building of new refineries and the Dems have blocked it. So do not blame President Bush for higher gas prices place the blame where it belongs on the heads of the Democrats. Again, if Obama and the Democrats get their way and tax the oil companies even higher like Carter did during his term, look for even higher prices and long lines at gas stations. Thats the type of "change you can believe in" if you vote for Obama.

earthisnotflat, Even the French think the US is winning in Iraq and have reaffirmed their commitment to Iraq.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Sunday that the security situation in Iraq was improving and reaffirmed France’s willingness to help rebuild the war-ravaged country.
“I have the feeling that things are better. Statistics show a drop in security incidents,” Kouchner told AFP after a working lunch with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on the last day of his two-day visit to Iraq.

tim - that is not true... drilling for oil in the US is not going to make a dent in oil prices... this is fact admitted by the oil companies themselves... all that will do by drilling will be destroy even more valuable natural resourse (believe it or not, we need a green earth to live on... have you heard of global warming?) and even more importantly, we need to develop a whole new mindset to combat the oil problem, develop other sources for energy and transportation that are not so inefficient... but that is beyond the older crowd who can't deal with necessary changes... unfortunately for people like you, life will move forward... either get out of the way if you can't lend a hand or pitch in and face the facts that things DO have to change

if saddam was still in power, iran woudl be balanced out, 4000+ americans woudlbe alive, we wouldn't have this spiraling debt, hence teh dollar woudl not have fallen, hence gas wouldbe still be cheap and we'd all be a lot better off.

That means he wishes he would have told us a different lie about why we should go in. He is still not sorry for lying. He has not begun to regret it yet. Wait till he is out and people say goodbye to the worst president in history. He will be another Nixon.
Posted by: ken | Jun 10, 2008 11:00:56 PM
but the french are not bringing more troops... every major country in the world has pulled out of iraq... why? face it... it's a failed endeavor and we need to admit our mistake and CORRECT it, not just push forward more blindly using our children as pawns to SAVE FACE... what an embarassment! no wonder bush is 'apologizing' for his 'rhetoric'... (an empty but revealing comment)... what france is willing to do is what EVERY country including the democrats would be willing to do ... REBUILD a country we have destroyed... we owe it to the iraqis!... but not until we end our illegal military occupation and let the iraqis sort things out... believe it or not, the overwhelming majority (poll after unreported poll show) that the majority of iraqi citizens want the US military OUT
Posted by: earthisnotflat | Jun 10, 2008 11:03:39 PM
tim and mary are now the 20% minority who still are too scared to admit that they have been lied to... bush has created the overwhelming instability in the mideast, and THAT is what is driving up oil prices, plus the worthless dollar that he has destroyed, and add to that his lack of international competence leading to people laughing at us as being country bumpkins... what a shame to see people still defend this idiot

Blind faith.
I guess Obama was right, when he describe Americans as being lost, needing someone to care and listen to them.
"It seems to me that each day, thousands of Americans are going about their lives – dropping the kids off at school, driving to work, shopping at the mall, trying to stay on their diets, trying to kick a cigarette habit – and they're coming to the realization that something is missing. They're deciding that their work, their possessions, their diversions, their sheer busyness, is not enough.
They want a sense of purpose, a narrative arc to their lives. They're looking to relieve a chronic loneliness. And so they need an assurance that somebody out there cares about them, is listening to them – that they are not just destined to travel down that long road toward nothingness. And this restlessness – this search for meaning"
Obama is using you.
Maybe you do not realize that today. One day you will.
He has used so many things to work your minds. You do not see it now, but one day you will.

anyone who supports Bush any further is no better than he is..why would any american support this miserable little tyrant for one minute more?.

.....And the world is way better without Saddam - the Iraqis are prospering, the entire Middle East is engulfed in peace and the US is pumping oil as much she wants! Uh....paradise!

Bush is telling a BRITISH newspaper that he made mistakes? How about telling the American public and APOLOGIZING to the mothers and wives of all the dead soldiers and those with broken bodies or PTSD for the rest of their lives. He makes me want to vomit!
Hey George. It's TOO LATE. You've left this mess to Obama. You ought to be ashamed of what you've done to this nation.

Just a comment to Terry up there.
Technically Hawaii might not be a state of the United States of America, but when everyone believes something is true, IT IS TRUE. I have never heard of 49 states of America, only 50 states of america.

earthisnotflat, If Saddam was still in power, as Obama wanted, the world could very well be dealing with TWO nuclear powers in the middle east thumbing their nose at the US, the UN and the West. And what would Obama do, "Oh please don[t bomb us or give your nukes to Al Qaeda just let me know what you want." Obama's idea of dealing with enemies who want to destroy us is "talk is precious action is cheap". Again, in case you are ignorant of history, Obama tactics pf using mere talk when dealing with an avowed enemy who wants to kill has never worked. Please don't tell me that it is President Bush's fault that Iran hates the US. Iran started their hatred of the US during the Carter Presidency when American hostages were held and Carter's idea, similar to Obama, of talk talk talk, did not work. It took the threat of serious action from President Reagan to make Iran finally release the US hostages. Obama sounds a lot like Carter. During Carter's four years of Presidency Carter/Obama decimated the military, made enemies like Iran disrespect and hate the US, raised taxes to the hilt, sky rocketed the deficit, raised inflation and interest rates to the hilt, raised gas prices, etc. etc. etc. If you want a replay of the Carter Presidency and the type of "change you can believe in" vote Obama.

"So, in the end you have to ask yourself' Do I feel lucky today?"
Who do you think the Taliban would want for president?

When was the last time planes were hijacked, embassies bombed, American civilians killed overseas??
Posted by: 20202 | Jun 10, 2008 11:38:13 PM
bear, actually Iraq is pumping more oil now , the surge is working and the middle east is becoming much more stabilized. I know this must make you sad. I know that you want Obama to raise the white flag of defeat in Iraq and let Al Qaeda and Iran have their way with Iraq so they can have all of Iraq's oil so they can use it to provide the means to attack the US making another 9/11 more likely. Oh I forgot you may also be sad that the US has not had another 9/11 and that is why you are supporting Obama. oh my.
