Cindy McCain Presses Obama Patriotism Case

ABC News' Ed O'Keefe Reports: Laura Bush may be ready to give Michelle Obama the benefit of the doubt when it comes to her patriotism but Cindy McCain may not.

"I don't know why she said what she said," Mrs. McCain explains in an interview with ABC News' Kate Snow airing on "Good Morning America" Thursday. "Everyone has their own experience. I don't know why she said what she said, all I know is that I have always been proud of my country."

WATCH "GOOD MORNING AMERICA" THURSDAY ON ABC TO SEE KATE SNOW'S INTERVIEW WITH CINDY MCCAIN.

Snow asked McCain if she was "insulted when Michelle Obama said she was proud of her country for the first time", referencing remarks Obama made at a Wisconsin rally during her husband's fight for the Democratic presidential nomination against Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of country not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change," Mrs. Obama told the Madison crowd, sparking outrage from conservative critics and fodder for an online ad produced by the Republican party in Tennessee.

In a rare move, Mrs. McCain also challenged Mrs. Obama's remark, saying as she introduced her husband at a rally shortly after Obama's remarks, "I'm proud of my country, I don't know if you heard those words earlier. I'm very proud of my country."

In subsequent interviews, Obama attempted to clarify her remarks -- something she did again in her appearance as a co-host of ABC's daytime talk show "The View".

Obama insisted she is "proud of my country, without a doubt," going on to explain "I'm a girl who grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Chicago and let me tell you, of course I'm proud. What I was talking about is pride in the political process."

Patriotism might not be the only skirmish between the potential first spouses this election year. In the interview airing on "Good Morning America" Thursday, McCain didn't shy away from political questions.

Asked by Snow if she would feel safe with Obama as president, McCain replied, "I would feel safe with my husband as president . . .I think Barack Obama is a fine man and Michelle Obama is a fine woman (but) this is about who would be better and I think my husband would be better."

Mrs. McCain is currently touring Vietnam in support of Operation Smile, a non-profit organization that provides facial reconstruction surgery.

ABC News' Bret Hovell, Sunlen Miller, Jake Tapper, and Jennifer Parker contributed to this report.

Cindy McCain may be patriotic, but she seems totally poisonous.

UHHmmmm, lets see what comes to mind.

Drugs and Adultery = NO CLASS

Cindy needs to stop talking, she has a lot of nerve.

cindy is proud of her drug addiction. i guess you must be on drugs to be married to mcshame

Cindy is sinking in the polls faster than her husband is. These two need to take a hint.

Say what you will. Cindy McCain is no where near the woman that Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, or Michelle Obama is. She needs to spend some money on class lessons..that attidude really makes her look ugly. Stealing cookie recipes from an American Institution (isn't that a frderal offence?)

Many men have stepped down this year for adultery who was associated in politics??

So you want to vote one in office as a President who committed adultery and then married it.

I am confused, totally.

The O-Clones are now trying to justify Barkey's drug addiction. Who cares where he got them from? Seems like you're trying to say since he BOUGHT the drugs instead of STEALING them, that makes it alright. Who wants a crack head for President? I guess you Bots don't mind.

On another note, how many of you knew Barkey met with a rep from Hezbollah while he was in MI?

I'm sure the Clones have a justification for the crackhead meeting with terrorists too.

I have a question for the O-Clones. Do you need to see Barkey having sex with a baby before you agree his behavior is out of bounds? Or will you blame the baby?

As anyone who heard Mrs. Obama's comments or has read them since knows, Michelle Obama has always been proud of her country. She was speaking of being really proud of our political process this year because so many people have become involved. Cindy McCain knows that as sure as the sun comes up and she's just trying to fool people and make political points. Maybe she should just go steal some more cookies.

Cindy has the look of a first lady. Mrs Obama does not. End of story.

Ya'll need to quit dissin' pigs...lol. They are cute creatures!

Having Cindy McCain attack Michelle Obama is NOT going to win the presidency for McCain. A stupid strategy from an inept campaign.

Michelle Obama is an extraordinary American & our next First Lady!

And Cindy, my advice to you is to ease up a little on that prenup (prenuptial agreement). Give the man some benefit of the doubt; after all, he is now running for president, and you would not expect the people of America to trust your husband with their economy, when you yourself wouldn't trust him with yours.

Patriotism =class

Has anyone asked either candidate if they have ever folded a flag incorrectly or (even worse) let it touch the ground? Flag pin are baby toys, True Patriots revere the flag itself, not what it stands for. True Patriots wrap themselves in the flag and support Torturers for Freedom! True Patriots accuse anyone who disagree with them of being terrorist-loving traitors. Bah!

Michelle Obama looks like a man in drag...

People, this campaign is not about the wives, but rather the husbands. This is all non-news!

Posted by: winkyeah | Jun 18, 2008 6:10:06 PM

Has anyone asked the first Mrs. McCain-- the one he left while she was recovering from a serious accident for a younger woman--how she feels?
