Clinton Presidential Bid Doomed By Bill, Campaign Infighting
June 30, 2008 5:53 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: In the August issue of Vanity Fair, Gail Sheehy, author of the biographical book, "Hillary’s Choice," chronicles the demise of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, revealing some new tidbits about the demise of her historic bid.
Sheehy exposes more of the infighting within her campaign including the battles between former campaign adviser Harold Ickes and former chief strategist Mark Penn. She includes this quote from Ickes, "Penn was the chief strategist. Following our loss, he now disclaims responsibility for anything and everything that went wrong and acts as if he were barely involved, which is especially galling from someone who made [nearly] $20 million from the campaign.”
Sheehy also focuses on Bill Clinton, reporting that the former President wanted his own office in the campaign headquarters and that a top fundraiser described him as out of control.
Monetary issues plagued Clinton’s campaign and it is revealed that “there wasn’t a budget request denied in Iowa,” and that the early voting state cost the campaign $25 million dollars.
The campaign arguably never was able to recover from that financial blow and, as reported in the article, Clinton “resisted focusing on money” even through she was briefed about it.
“We have a cash flow problem,” Ickes reportedly told Clinton, per Sheehy.
Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle, who has been blamed for the loss in Iowa by overspending, was fired and, as Sheehy reports, asked that Mark Penn be fired too. That did not happen, and the infighting continued between Penn, Ickes and others.
Sheehy reports that according to Ickes, it didn’t sink in for Clinton that it was over until 12 hours after Obama clinched the nomination. Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-NY., and other members of Congress, urged Clinton to concede, and 24 hours later it was clear to Clinton that she had to step down.

Posted by: angie | Jun 30, 2008 7:53:14 PM
The article dealt with how Clinton's people messed up the campaign yet people post negatives regarding Obama. If redneck and others want to vote for McCain be my guest. The hell hole this economy is in, and the fact that McCain is out there selling wolf tickets about Iran. You all get what you deserve, another war and total collapse of the economy. Boy that will really stick it to Obama!

i think if you did the research you will find that is not obamas way of politics--hillarys biggest problem is willy----she should have divorced him years ago---by hanging on to him she made it look like all that mattered is money and power and people catch on to that------willy was and probably still is a very sleezy person and his behavior seems to be a mental problem.

The Clinton Machine was doomed by a better human (one with integrity) and SUPERIOR CANDIDATE!
It is ignorant to continue selling Obama short!
The Clinton Machine DID defeat every other candidate!

why do you post to me as if im blaming obama i know bill destroyed hillary i am an die hard obama supporter just trying to point out its not obamas fault she lost its not the medias its both bill and hillary because they thought they were entitled and sure they would win with this being a sure dem year and then when obama beat her is when they both became bitter and resorting to stupid things resulting in a bad campaign
Posted by: angie | Jun 30, 2008 8:06:18 PM
This is stupid. She got about half of the votes. I can't say that Bill ruined it for her. It may not have helped, but come on, it is not like Obama won by much.

when it all comes out about mccain in the 1960s he will be doomed as there are a number of people like me who have lived thru that era and he will be fully exposed for exactly what he is---more and more is surfacing every day---i would like to give obama the chance--the same way we gave JFK THE CHANCE.HE MAY BE WHAT WE NEED FROM ALL FRONTS INCLUDING THE RACIST CRAP.

I'm sick of these Vanity Fair type articles. The last magazine article by DiDi Myers' husband was a final attempt to embarrass and humiliate the Clinton's, and who knows where the author got her info on this one. That one seems to have fizzled out didn't it... I also just love how the media has been trying to create a story by speculating about problems between Bill Clinton and Obama...all of these unnamed sources are getting a little tiresome. If they are such a part of the inner circle and all of this supposed information is getting leaked,I would think someone would be getting fired! It doesn't really matter to me what caused Clinton to lose at this point, I still won't be voting for Sen. Obama as nothing has changed to make me want to support him. Just a side note: I find it interesting now that John Kerry has an opponent in his primary for reelection, based on his voting for the same Iraq War resolution Obama had relentlessly hammered Clinton on for supporting. Wonder why Obama was so quick to forgive Kerry and his other Congressional supporters, but not Clinton. Oh, right, they were endorsing him. Again, the hypocrisy. It still amazes me how the most unprepared, unqualified, and least experienced candidate in the entire field wound up with the Democratic nomination. Maybe Vanity Fair should investigate that.
