Gore Backs Obama's Presidential Run

ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Nitya Venkataraman Report: Former Vice President Al Gore will endorse Sen. Barack Obama Monday night in Detroit, appearing on stage alongside the presumptive Democratic nominee for the first time in the 2008 election cycle.

In an email message sent to Gore supporters Monday afternoon, the former vice president endorsed Obama's White House bid, committing himself to the November cause. "From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States."

Gore also made a direct appeal for campaign contributions to distribution list started in 2006 that has "about 640,000 members," according to a Gore spokesman.

"I've never asked members of AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign before," he wrote, "but this moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action."

Continuing, "That's why I am asking you to join me today in showing your support for Barack Obama by making a contribution to his campaign today."

While visiting a GM plant in Flint, Michigan during a shift change, Obama said Gore's endorsement "means a lot to him" and spoke to the advice Gore has given him "around climate change, energy and the environment" adding "but, you know, he's also provided good political advice."

"He's somebody who has been a visionary but just for the party but the country. And there are very few people who are more knowledgable than he is on a whole host of issues and challenges we're going to me facing in the years to come," Obama said.

Though the former vice president stayed out of the Democratic presidential primary season, his presence in the party -- that of Democratic heavyweight-cum-Novel Prize-winning environmental crusader-cum-party elder -- always lingered near.

Gore supporters first hoped they could draft the the 2000 Democratic presidential nominee to make his second presidential run in 2008, and as time ran out on that option waited with baited breath for the Gore-acle to make his presidential pick.

In April, Obama said he would consider the former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee for a Cabinet position in his administration.

"I can guarantee you that Al Gore will be invited to take part in my administration. And I don't know what he'll want to so and what he'll be willing to accept," Obama said in Indiana. "He and I already talk you know periodically. And he evaluated our environmental plan. I took many ideas from him."

Obama has mentioned on the trail that he speaks to Gore often, but hadn't been pushing for an endorsement.

In March, Obama said "Ive talked to him mostly about policy -gotten guidance and good ideas from him and so I'm not really pushing for an endorsement. I'd love to have it but you know when you've won the Nobel Peace prize you know, making an endorsement politically you know may be a step down but he's very supportive in terms of thinking through ideas."

Supporters of a a Obama-Gore ticket shouldn't hold their breath, the presumptive Democratic candidate said last year that "having won the Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar that being Vice President again would be probably a step down for him."

No way Obama. Who listens to Gore anyway. They all think he is a nut job.

McCain 08

I am glad he's backing Obama...a Gore endorsement should be the final nail in his political coffin.

Anyone out there that is actually thinking of voting for McCain, please check his senate voting record. When he decides to show up, he votes with bush. But, he doesn't show up to vote 60% of the time. Talk about missing in action. McCain does nothing to earn his senate pay. Nothing. Will he display the same "integrity" in his job performance as president? Most likely, yes.

Arizona voter for Obama!!!

Howard Dean and company probably think Gore will boost Mr Obama's ratings. Sorry, he wont. And how come he's endorsing him only now?

judesuper, do your research before your post, you need to spend five minutes and see what your FRESHMAN senator has done as far as sponsering bills that have passed. He was even worse as a state senator in Illinois. Mc Cain was the one behind the surge that has worked and should have been done sooner. Obama wanted to surrender.

I'm getting sick of Bush-bashing. I disagree with his policies as much as the next guy, but seriously, he doesn't have THAT much power to screw things up.

He's probably thinking his life sucks right now because of all the whining he has to put up with; like gay people in leopard colored thongs picketing on his front lawn. If it was my lawn, I'd douse these idiots with a Super-Soaker full of pee, or give them yummy granola bars laced with a potent laxitive.

Geevil

go ahead keep trashing Gore. I am sure lots of Americans will get behind you trashing the man they wish had been President...even moany of those who voted for Bush.

But you keep up that positive American spin.

the rest of us will watch as all the negatives you guys are still typing on here drives even those who use to be with you to say..."these guy were on our side?"

statements like the ones you have been making are just a big wake up to those real Americans and dems who actually use to side with you.

Makes them realize that maybe all that angry support wasn't for Hillary ...it was just blind anger.

anyone who can trash Gore (calling him a "loser", and deriding the fact that America made a mistake that has cost us lives and our reputation and standing oy) to do that now with where we are and what he has done in the past 8 years...a person like that just has to be just "off".

oy.

Gee, no surprise now that Hillary is out. If Gore really believed in him he would have endorsed before the primaries ended, not waited until it was all over. He's doing what all the leading democrats are doing, they don't have a choice.

Obama will probably give him the position of EPA so he can finish destroying the American economy.

dl Al Gore = LOOSER, any more questions.

Posted by: Billy Bob | Jun 16, 2008 4:26:26 PM

I guess all of the same old politicians backing the empty suit is the change that we've always be waiting for.

Posted by: Mack | Jun 16, 2008 4:26:42 PM

"...do whatever he can to elect Obama". Including just staying out of his way?

Posted by: Bob | Jun 16, 2008 4:28:07 PM

I will never vote for McCain - I will write Ron Paul in.

Right.

He secretly wanted the Clintons to win. The same people that he felt cost him the 2000 election because of their politics and, of course, Monica Lewinski.

Posted by: Great Reasoning | Jun 16, 2008 4:29:24 PM

I'd even vote for Urkel over Obama...lol

Posted by: J | Jun 16, 2008 4:30:43 PM

Big AL, Looser in 2000, now that is a slam dunk for Obama, this election is in the bag.

Posted by: Billy Bob | Jun 16, 2008 4:31:16 PM

Pushing the world government and destroying America's sovereignty. Both are Council on Foreign Relations scum.
Google "Endgame", "Freedom to Fascism".

Al Gore? Well, shucks. Now there's still another reason to vote for John McCain!

Posted by: Chris | Jun 16, 2008 4:31:46 PM

"I intend to do whatever I can..."

Question: what can he do??
