McCain: On Some Issues 'Obama’s Word Cannot Be Trusted'

ABC News's Bret Hovell reports: At a fundraiser tonight in Louisville, Ky., Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said that the word of his opponent for the White House, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., "cannot be trusted."

"You know, this election is about trust, and trusting people's word" McCain told a crowd of donors to his campaign. "And unfortunately, apparently, on several items, Sen. Obama's word cannot be trusted."

McCain’s remark came at the conclusion of a number of examples of what McCain said were Obama's changes in position. McCain cited a proposal that he and Obama appear together at town hall meetings -– which Obama originally seemed to be in favor of, but has not agreed to yet -– and Obama's reversal on whether or not to take federal financing for his campaign as signs that Obama's word could not be trusted.

"So there are stark differences between Senator Obama and myself on a broad variety of issues," McCain said.

McCain has frequently mentioned his desire for the campaign with Obama to be "respectful," but has been ramping up more personal attacks on Obama in recent weeks.

The fundraising event in Louisville raised $2 million for McCain's campaign, according to the chairwoman of his Kentucky finance committee, who announced the number when she was introducing McCain.

Rodney, you have a problem with a war hero who loves his country passionately?

rodney,

It is beyond belief what is going on. I'm actually fairly conservative and do not trust politicians (right or left) generally, especially on health issues. But in the economy that we're in, with people struggling just to pay gas to come in for their visits, to continue to be servants of the health insurance lobbyists is about as uncompassionate as it gets.

Senator Obama is a very far left radical taking over the Democratic Party. No wonder 80% of Clinton voters are switching to McCain or will not vote at all. The Democratic Party has no credibility at all now that a socialist is pulling the strings. America is not ready to become a socialist/communist nation and that is what Obama means by CHANGE. Obama thinks we should nationalize the oil companies, pay for food stamps and housing for those who choose not to work and let in any and every immigrant, illegal or otherwise. He does not care about America's tradional values. He thinks everything needs to be changed.

JULIE,

It's "our" country by the way, not just yours.

Opa - most of these posts are made by McCain supporters. They choose to slander Obama by making it look like they are Hillary supporters. Same crapola for quite awhile.

Mary,

Resorting to untruths does not help your argument.

doc----if we put an end to the ambulance chasing lawyers--and the frivilous lawsuits healthcare would be cut in half---but public has a problem with the lore of getting something for nothing---i see many of these people every day----and the fools do not realize that they are and will pay the bill

Senator Obama is a man of great vision and will make a great president. Because he is a leader he does just follow what others think he should follow. Senator McCain wants him to follow his directions in debate format and campaign financing, but Senator Obama is a leader and makes decision best for his campaign. I believe he will be a great president that will move our great country forward in the right direction. I my opinion he can be trust and will keep his promise to the american people.

Obama is too risky. We don't know him and what we've seen about his shifting positions tells us he has a character problem.

He'll lose in November. People won't vote for someone they can't trust.

doc--and the lawyers plus insurance companies get a whole lot richer----it is like a runaway train----and we the people pay all the costs

Look at what Obama did for Chicago - NOTHING! It's slums are worse than before. McCain has made Arizona one of the best states to live in, businesses are moving there from other states. People are employed and enjoying the fruits of their labor! McCain's past is very, very credible and accomplished. Obama's is full of lies and self-serving speeches, nothing more.

Sally, it turns out, seems absolutely correct. The mindless posters who do not argue any particular position of Senator Obama's but rather choose to deceive have taken over this blog.

I hope they keep it up, it only hurts McCain more and shows their cynicism towards the intelligence of Americans.

I hope that americans who are unsure or have formed a negative opinion of Senator Obama will read his book "Audacity of Hope" they will find that Senator Obama is a compassionate and brillant man, who cares deeply about the people of america. If they examine his positions and policy for themselves, I belieive that they will conclude he is the best choice for america and can be trusted to keep his promises to the american people.

obama flip flops more than a boat full of fish, he is an empty suit, with no experience, no real jobs, no nothing, except taking handouts because of affirmative action, free college, free law school, free everything, he deserves because he is better than the TWP, right, guess who is not voting for him, the TWP by the millions,

Out of of all the battles McCain could fight with Obama - "truthiness" (to quote John Stewart) should not be one of them. I actually liked McCain years ago before he became Bush the Third but HIS flip-flopping turned me off years ago. I don't know yet how I feel about Obama but I do know McCain doesn't have a leg to stand on with this argument.

It's funny that McCain is questioning someone else's word...he can't even remember what his own positions are. Is he for amnesty, or against it? Is he for NAFTA, or against it? Is he for off shore drilling, or against it? Is he for the Bush tax cuts, or against them? Etc...

John McCain is one of the least principled politicians in the last ten years...and that's pretty astounding!
