McCain Promises an Increase in Women by End of First Term

ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., promised today that he would increase the numbers of women in government if he is elected president.

"I assure you, with confidence, at the end of my first term you will see a dramatic increase of women in every part of the government, in my administration," McCain said. "I look you in the eye and I promise."

McCain was answering a question at a "virtual town hall" meeting, which his campaign promoted as an opportunity for presumptive Republican presidential nominee to reach out to independents and Democrats, and aimed at former supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton.

His opening remarks at the event included a long section of praise for Clinton, the Democratic senator who officially suspended her presidential campaign in early June.

"Every place that I go, I'm told that Sen. Clinton inspired millions of young women in this country," McCain said. "And not necessarily young women -– inspired a whole generation of young Americans in this country."

He stressed bipartisanship, and took several opportunities to mention his work with Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, as well as Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold and North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan.

McCain's town hall was not open to the press -– reporters were invited to listen in on a conference call.

"We do many private meetings with potential supporters and offered the media an opportunity to listen to the senator's remarks," said Brooke Buchanan, a campaign spokeswoman.

Buchanan said that 75 people were in attendance at the campaign's Arlington, Va., headquarters, and that others participated over the phone.

Not all of McCain’s answers were likely to appeal to moderate voters. He stressed his continued support for the unpopular war in Iraq, and called Roe vs. Wade "a bad decision."

"I think we have to convince people that our view, that the rights of the unborn are as important as rights of the born," McCain said. "Because I think we share the same respect for human life."

Stacey:

I believe that birth certificate has been debunked as phoney, no doctor's signature for one thing.
How about his records from 8 years in the Illinois senate? Do you have a link for those?
An article in some magazine is not medical records, sorry. McCain released his, we need to see Obama's.

quote....I don't understand why Obama won't commit to these town hall style meetings and debates. They tell us a lot more about a candidate than a pre-written speech......

I suspect that's exactly why Obama doesn't want them. If you watch him answer questions off-the-cuff, he doesn't sound all that spell-binding.

Is this guy for real? Who does he think he's fooling. He is sleezing around and sneaking around to go after the hearts of women who are still grieving their lost. Why did he choose to have this "town hall" meeting in secret without press? Sounds like the sneaky lying tactics of the Bush Whitehouse. I don't trust him. I use to think he was a nice man. No longer. I use to respect him for the courage he had for his imprisonment and
treatment he received. I know see that he is a little "touched in the head". God help us and God help the Unite States of America.

Some of Obama's best friends are terrorists, like Ayres and Dohrn.

rodney:

I am asking that your candidate be vetted as vigorously as McCain and Hillary Clinton were vetted.

Now, that may be reason for ridicule by the Obama camp, but to many Americans it is a necessity before Obama can even be considered for POTUS. What is he hiding? If nothing, then there is no reason in the world to avoid opening up these records to the American people.
It's really very simple.

PUMA!!

amazing how all the republican attacks against obama have nothing to do with the issues - if this is the best the gop can do, obama is a shoe in. pathetic!

McCain doesn't give a hoot about Roe vs.
Wade..........except at election time. TThat is the way Bush won. Hey if he isuch a wonderful man. How come he ran aaround on his first wife who waited for him while he was captive? Then he goes and hooks up with this one he has now. Sounds like he talks out of 2 sides of his mouth and act appropriately when it benefits his purpose. Watch out ladies this guy is a real slimy sneak!

Bob in FL - so what? McCain's associates for the last 20 years have been REPUBLICANS, most of whom supported GW Bush! That's much, much worse in most Americans' books these days. McCain is the candidate of the party of failure, misery and collapse.

Posted by: longan | Jun 14, 2008 10:20:19 PM

Donna - one of McCain's best friends is GEORGE BUSH. ugh!

Posted by: Karl Hungus | Jun 14, 2008 10:21:03 PM

McCain sees a problem, too few women in government, he is correcting this problem. Women are just as good, as men or better. I will vote for him.
