Mrs. Obama Reaffirms Husband's Support to Gay Community
June 27, 2008 7:24 AM
ABC News' Rachel Humphries and Kate McCarthy report: Michelle Obama addressed the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council Gala in New York City Thursday night and renewed her husband's promise to repeal federal policies that she says limit the rights of gays and lesbians.
"Barack believes that we must fight for a world as it should be. A world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws like D.O.M.A. (Defense of Marriage Act) and Don't Ask Don't Tell," Mrs. Obama said, addressing an audience of 250 people at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.
D.O.M.A stipulates that states are not required to recognize same sex marriages, even if the marriages are recognized in another state. The law also states that the federal government define marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman. "Don't Ask Don't Tell", as it is commonly called, allows gay men and women to serve in the military but it prevents them from talking about their sexuality openly.
Last week Sen. Obama, D-Ill., told ABC News’ Jake Tapper that while he believes marriage is between a man and a woman, “these are decisions that need to be made at a state and local level.”
Tonight Obama's wife echoed that sentiment.
"He has said that the federal government should not stand in the way of the states that want to decide for themselves how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples, whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage," she said.
Without mentioning him by name, Mrs. Obama criticized presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Last week McCain reiterated his support for D.O.M.A.
"I voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which clearly indicated the unique status of a marriage between man and woman," McCain said in Arlington, VA. "I will continue to support that, I will continue to have my position."
ABC News' Bret Hovell contributed to this report.

Funny--why does Barry never speak to the LBGT groups? Why won't he march in Chicago's Gay Pride parade?????
Very strange....

@Food4thought: Maybe because he does not necessarily agree with their lifestyle but supports their right to live as they choose? What's so strange about that????

McCain - Please, please, please stop using the "unique status" excuse to deny civil rights of Americans. You dumped your first wife (and went after a much younger beauty queen) after she became disfigured following a serious car accident. Please just don't.

"Self-destructive for ANY nation to condone, support and promote societally-destructive behaviors."
Like starting a war without just cause?

If Michelle Obama sincerely wants to get rid of discriminatory laws;
When is she going to campaign for getting rid of discriminatory Affirmative Action, Acts, and Policies?

This further proves Obama is both a coward and will say anything to get elected. His wife says they are for repealing DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act)? This was passed was overwhelming votes in both houses of Congress. And Bubba Clinton signed it. And Obama wants to repeal it? Why?
Let states decide the issue, and when they do "gay marriage" loses every time. Even in liberal California a ban on "gay marriage" was passed by 2/3 of the vote! But then, liberal groups sued and got unelected, unAmerican judges to overturn the will of the people!
Obama is trying to have it both ways on this issue too, just like the gun-rights issue. He is slick-Willie's double.

Michelle Obama lies.

What makes Obama think that his is the right future? He is supposed to be doing what the citizens want and the majority of citizens refuse to be held hostage by the <5% of the population. It is wrong and you people know it too, just that you are too stupid to realize it.

Debra: You were not born that way. Your lesbianism is a dangerous choice. Do not exchange a little bit of debatable fun now for an eternity of suffering. It is not worth it. It is hard to overcome bad habits but not impossible.
As far as Mrs Obama is concerned she would be a terrible choice for a First Lady, not because she is black but because of her hateful beliefs and philosophies.

To start with, people are born gay or lesbian. NO ONE MAKES THAT CHOICE !
I am glad to see that the Obamas believe in equality. No person should have the right to determine what rights another group have. If people want to make a commitment to each other, it should be acknowledged for what it is.

Except that Obama is a very closeted, very protected and faithful Muslim who has an agenda to fulfill for America and that means the complete obliteration of the transgendered and all those of an alternate lifestyle. He's more closeted than we've ever been and the moment we wake up to this guy is the day we make the right decision for our preservation. All these political poser supporters swarming the internet posting falsehoods about Obama's dedication to the transgendered and America in general won't fool America when we have to get down into the fire you've created and we have to deal with Obama on America's daily political frontline. That's when he won't stand a chance and America gets to win.

Do you really want to vote for a man who caters to all special interest groups? Aman that will drag us into a strong socialist nation? More tazes and more gov. programs? Considering the "Gay" issue. Does everyone know what these perverted people do with each others bodies? Swallowing sperm, putting their penus into each others anus. This is our business, because it does affect everyone. How very deginerate this really is. I couldn't support a man that will bring us into a future that is now plaguing most of Europe. Wake up people! God Bless America!!!

Obama Campaign has no clue.
No body cares gay rights or abotion issues for this year's Election.
Voters are sick when politicians court votes without any principles.
What a shame.

I'd like to offer a rebuttal for "it's ok they're born that way." What would happen if we took that stance on everything? We take measures to try to fix a lot of conditions people have since birth.
Maybe people are born pedophiles or murderers. Is the sole basis for not trying to fix a genetic problem that it invades the rights of others? If we go down that route why should we stop trying to fix other physical and mental disabilities obtained at birth just because it makes people "different"? Look at the rising HIV/AIDS rate among gay males. Wouldn't that be considered a health issue? Also if people are strictly born that way how come a largely disproportionate number of gays have sexual abuse in their childhood? Just some food for thought take it as you will.

On the issue of gay marriage it is a publicly recognized instituion. Shouldn't the public decide when to recognize it versus not? Amazing how liberals sometimes use the argument "the people" should decide except when it fits their agenda ie votes and then they believe on forcing ideals on the public which is contradictory.

Fixed my above post since I worded a couple of things incorrectly.

This is what the two major parties give us, and will continue to give us. Candidates the people have not chosen. Do a majority of Democrats REALLY believe as Obama does? Do a majority of Republicans REALLY believe as McCain does? These liberal candidates are foisted on us by the party bosses and the media. And then we obediently pick one of them, believing that we have government of, by and for the people.
This won't stop until we stop voting these two parties.

I know I was born Gay, for the rest of you people I just wish you would stay out of our lives . I'm also a Viet War Vet. and served my Country so you could have the right to say such sickining remarks about something you take for granted to live your life to the fullest "Life Liberty and the "Dream" of happiness, because you see thats all I get to do. One thing I know is the Bible you read is so outdated and written by men for men. This comment is from a girl, now 55 year old woman, grandmother of three, through my partner and her children, my partner passed and was called to home in 2002, but we are still family. Yeah that's what I said, "Family" so as far as I'm concerened you people who write such vile and hate filled opinions, will rot in another place where hatred is ever present around and dwell in kaka forever.
My God is a loving and caring God created me in a great image of Love and delight, this is my gift to share to the world for I am saved in Love and you shall die from your heart filled with hatred!!!!!!!!!

Sen. Obama is a very smart man, however it would be wise to ask his wife not to speak on his behalf. She looks like a good person but she is not smart at all. What comes out of her mouth is full of emotions and very little rationale. She is making the road to the White House very difficult for Democrats. She should stay home and stay away from making comments which could be taken as if her husband support.

First of all, obama is not a muslim. Second, all people deserve the same rights. Thats prety hard to argue. Third,
"Do you really want to vote for a man who caters to all special interest groups?",
John McCain's entire(or at least almost entire) campaign is run by some of the most famous lobbyists in Washington. Not to mention that he wants to bash Obama for getting money from Fannie and Freddie when he gets over 160,000 from leaders of those companies. You can not always trust what you hear on the news, it is usually a half truth.
