Obama Calls for More Responsibility from Fathers at Church Speech
June 15, 2008 3:04 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama used the Fathers Day holiday to push the message of the parental responsibility – singling out fathers needing to step up to the plate within their families.
"We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception," Obama said to the Apostolic Church of God church in Chicago, "What makes you a man is not the ability to have a child – any fool can have a child, that doesn’t make you a father – it’s the courage to raise one that makes you a father."
The Illinois senator said that too many fathers in the African American community are MIA in their families – acting like boys rather than men – and the foundations of the family and the community has suffered. Obama – himself a father of two – laid out three areas where fathers must parent better: by setting high expectations for their children, instilling the value of empathy, and passing on the value of hope.
Obama used his own presidential run as an example of demonstrating high expectations in excellence to children.
"People would come up to me and say 'oh Barack, we love you man, we're rooting for you but we just don't think that a black man can be elected president.'" Obama recalled of the early days of his candidacy, "We had already defeated ourselves before we even started. We didn't set high enough expectations for ourselves, we believed that somebody else can do it but we can't do it. And that filters down to our children."
Senator Obama has been known in the past to preach a tough love message to parents – and reiterated many of the same themes in parenting before the predominantly African American community today
"Chris Rock had a routine. He said some-too many of our men, they're proud, they brag about doing things they’re supposed to do. They say ‘Well, I- I’m not in jail." Well you’re not supposed to be in jail!," Obama exclaimed, "Don’t brag about that. You know, so we’re glad that you’re in the home, but engage your child."
Obama said that Washington has a responsibility as well to fathers – like rewarding fathers with a large Earned Income Tax Credit, and getting rid of the financial penalties imposed on married couples.
Seated in the front pew were Obama's wife Michelle Obama and his two daughters Malia and Sasha. This was the first time the Obama family has attended church since formally cutting ties with their controversial Chicago church, Trinity United on May 31.
Obama – who received a poem for Fathers Day from his youngest daughter – joked that he had asked his wife why Fathers day wasn't as big as Mothers Day.
"She said 'let me tell you, everyday is Fathers day. Every day you're getting away with something. You're running for president; don’t talk to me about it!’"

Obama limped his way to the Democratic nomination.
The DNC rules committee gave the nomination to Obama.
Hillary supporters won't forget how badly they were treated by Obama supporters.

Stephanie, you are right about one thing. You reap what you sow. This is exactly what the republicans will find out on November 4, 2008. It will be pure payback for the devastation they have caused to our country.

let's make obama a more responsible father.
SEND HIM HOME to raise his children.
don't vote Obama

This is a message of personal responsibility that will no doubt play well with the moderate set. He is refuting the white view of African Americans as entitled victims.

I was at the church this morning when Obama spoke. Barack was great. What he said was a support for all fathers who are doing what they are supposed to do. His message was well-received by a church that has for many years supported good family values. The pastor has been married for over 30 years. His dad (who was the pastor) has been married for nearly 60 years. They have been good fathers and grandfathers. The negative messages of these various bloggers -- they just don't know what they are talking about.

Obama laid out areas where fathers must parent better: "by setting high expectations for their children"....yet Obama cannot lick smoking and overlooks any dangers to his children by second hand smoke. This is a SMALL THING for his children and their health so how can we as Americans ask for a BIG THING a more important thing for our nation. Obama also said that
"too many fathers in the African American community are MIA in their families", why again is he just singling out black people...Is Obama just interested in black people...why can't he say too many fathers are MIA in America and not single out just the blacks----we are a melting pot of people of all walks of life and yet his continues to direct his messages toward just the "black race". This new church must be just for blacks and that is why only the reference for blacks?

"Fathers step up to the plate". What does that mean? Are women really willing to give up overwhelming legal advantages in courts when that man who does step up to the plate hits a home run? Meaning, that if a man is ultimately a true father, sets good examples and provides for his children and the mother by the way decides to leave for whatever personal reason, she is going to try to limit as much as possible a fathers contact with her child. And why? Because he stresses me out? He did not care for my needs, "stepping up to the plate" is trite, simplistic, inflammatory and does not acknowledge women's 50% contribution to total failures of families. So when women refuse to acknowledge this they will remain confused, alone and bitter.

Me and Mccain are guilty of that also. Take Mccain, now he is pandering to hillary supporters even though he is against everything she stands for.

Yeah, right - this coming from the man who had his daughters sitting in Trinity Church since they were babies listening to the Wrong Rev. Wright preach his own brand of religion. Absolutely the perfect person to lecture/preach to the rest of us about parental responsibility...
The Republicans must be laughing in glee about this new "talking point" of Obama's.

look i am not an obama supporter but...first of all i agree that obama's 20 year history of attendance at trinity church was a problem, especially by involving his young impressionable children. to me this does bring to mind poor parental judgement issues. HOWEVER, in all fairness he has rebuked his church. and yes, i agree with him on this point, too many aa fathers are absent in their role, that message is necessary and has been for a very, long time. however if you or i hillary or mccain brought this issue up we would be accused of racism so we have a long way to go. i agree this is a very important discussion for obama to engage in. i hope to see more accountability versus victimhood entering into the discourse. this is a good start, kudos to obama.

Which republicans are you suggesting are laughing? Is it the gay congressmen chasing tyoung male interns for sex? Is it the gay senator Larry Craig arrested for soliciting in the mens room at a rest stop in Minnesota? Is it John MccCain who cheated on his first wife with Cindy McCain his current wife? Which is it? I'm curious since we all know the republicans are the party of family values.

To all the Obama-despisers on this site: I understand some of you are die hard 'W'epublicans, McCain supporters or disappointed Clinton Democrats. But when you feel you must attack everything Senator Obama has to say, even something universally championed like his call for 'real' fatherhood, you start to sound like a broken record with almost nothing of value to add to the debate. If you must be hateful/contrarian/skeptical/whatever, at least have the common sense to pick your battles. But please... keep at it if you must. You ultimately make the rest of us look and sound better.

I am amazed as an Independent voter how many folks will post horrific smears against Obama AS IF their OWN (McCain or Hillary) candidate could not be bombarded with the same rhetoric.
Anti- Obama posters bring up the same repititous remarks, while the Obama supporters defend their candidate.
Hc & MC supporters are quite hypocritical.
I live in FL, nothing was "stolen".
EVERY Democrat knew the rules before this election, and if they didn't like them, they should have been political activist LONG before now.
I don't live in Michigan, so I won't speak for them.
This election cycle has shown me how truly ignorant and self centered so many Americans are.
Guess what, this Independent voter in Florida, is voting...
OBAMA
OBAMA
OBAMA

Barack Obama's father abandoned his family when he was only two and I bet he missed having a father around and knows that is a grief and loss. Unfortunately, over 74% of African American babies are born to unwed moms and many do not have a relationship with a dad.
Nothing is more important than having a loving family around a child and that includes a dad. This is one thing I will agree with Obama on. Dads needs to be responsible with love and support.
