Obama Friend Wants Abortion Reduction Plank
June 25, 2008 11:07 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Gregory Wallace Report: Before the Democrats convene in Denver, the Rev. Jim Wallis plans to urge Barack Obama to go along with adding an “abortion reduction” plank to the party platform.
“Abortion reduction should be a central Democratic Party plank in this election,” Wallis told ABC News. “I’ll just say that flat out.”
Wallis, who hosted a Democratic candidates’ forum on CNN last year, discussed his plans after defending Obama against Dr. James Dobson’s charge that the Illinois Democrat distorted the traditional understanding of the Bible when he spoke to Wallis’s Sojourners group in 2006.
Beyond his plans to make a personal plea to Obama, Wallis said that he pitched the idea last week to DNC Chairman Howard Dean. The Rev. Tony Campolo, who sits on the party’s platform committee, also supports the plank and plans to push it, according to Wallis.
“This is going to be a big Denver conversation,” said Wallis. “You don’t have to call for criminalizing anyone. You don’t have to take a different stance about a woman’s right to choose. But you begin with the need for reducing abortion dramatically.”
The abortion reduction plank that Wallis envisions would call for making adoption easier, supporting low-income women, and stepping up pregnancy prevention efforts.
Without calling for restrictions such as parental consent laws, Wallis believes that if the Democrats were to alter their abortion platform, it could help them make inroads among young evangelicals and Catholics.
“Taking abortion seriously as a moral issue would help Democrats a great deal with a constituency that is already leaning in their direction on poverty and the environment,” said Wallis. “There are literally millions of votes at stake.”
Obama spokesman Bill Burton reacted to the concept of an abortion reduction plank by saying, "Sen. Obama has said repeatedly he wants to reduce unintended pregnancies, and has sponsored legislation to do just that. We welcome and listen to all voices in our platform process."
Obama backs two bills pertaining to preventing unintended pregnancies, according to Burton.
The Prevention First Act would increase funding for family planning and comprehensive sex education that teaches both abstinence and safe-sex methods. The Act would also expand insurance coverage of contraception, improve awareness about emergency contraception, and provide assistance to rape victims.
To combat unintended pregnancies in communities of color, Obama supports the Communities of Color Teach Prevention Act of 2007. The bill would provide grants to promote community-based services regarding teen pregnancy. It also would support research on teen pregnancy in communities of color.

abortion is legal in the UK and they are having HUGE problems with the rates of abortions, especially amongst teens. You know what, if you can keep it illegal for a few more years and teach kids to be safe, then i think its a much better option.
I am disgusted that Obama voted for partial birth abortion....

Abortion reduction plank makes sense. It will show those of us who are against abortions but supporting Obama that the Democratic party is serious. They tell us they are interested in opening the dialogue and fixing the causes instead of the symptom. So put it in writing and make me smile.

If someone told Obama it would get him all the votes he needed to get elected, He would change his stand on Aborition.
Looking back at all the times Obama flip-flopped on issues. What is one more. LOL
Obama's interest is getting elected. What he says to do that does not matter to him, one way or another.
His track record shows that much about him.

A reduction in abortions. Finally something everyone can agree on. Obama has dissapointed me lately, but finally something in the right direction. I would still recommend going with Ron Paul or 3rd party. These power hungry bufoons in DC need to go.

@Sharon - are you sure you aren't talking about McCain? Immigration, torture, oil drilling? The flip-flopper label just isn't working for you guys. Ask Gordon Smith (R-OR). He is one of the few Republicans with a clue about how to win right now.

PREVENTION--Just say NO is the best prevention money can't buy when we talk about abortion. Really, we should use the "N" word more often in lots of areas of our lives like drug use, petty crimes, spending money we don't have, etc.

Republican supporting Obama 08 - You are correct McCain is a flipflopper. I am also a lifelong republican who will not be voting for McCain because of his belligerence towards other nations among other things. I will vote 3rd party probably Paul, Nader, McKinney or that constitutional party guy. Obama is too much for welfare entitlements.

How so many of you can miss such a simple point...
First of all, Obama is on record stating that he personally is against abortion but he respects other people's right to make that decision for themselves (hence his Pro-Choice record).
Secondly, nobody is trying to get anything mandated. They are simply recognizing that many people don't have abortions b/c they think that its fun, but b/c of strenous factors, some within and some extrinsic of their control and seeking to mitigate these factors would curb the abortion rate while maintaining a woman's right to choose.
As stated in the article, this can be done by improving daycare availability, sex education, increasing availablity of contraceptives, access to abortion and even reducing poverty levels (as it is usually correlates with a high abortion rate).

Chloe...this whole article is ridiculous. Cindy M is an alcoholic, thief and abused wife. Instead of working in Vietnam and other third world countries she should be using her money to help American children. Some of these kids are in shelters because their parents cannot afford housing. Some are sick and don't have health insurance. And many are abused and neglected. Put your money where your mouth is Cindy and help America first.

Wow, 1.5 million babies a year. These abortion docs must be soleless sociopaths. How much do they get paid for ripping a baby apart anyway?

Yup those people do not have shoes...soleless! LOL
Abortion is of course none of your business and neither is it mine.
A personal decision and can be made ONLY by the pregnant woman.
Women with money can always take their personal business wherever they please. It is always the young and poor who suffer under arcane government religious misguidance.

i dont understand the people who are against abortion but you support war and blowing up babies and children that are already living and breathing not to mention pregnant woman please people explain how that is any better now i dont like abortion but i belive its necessary in some circumstances

Republicans claim to be pro-life, but then they support wars and death penalties will no problem at all. How about caring for the living AS WELL AS the unborn?
I think it's great that the Dems will consider policies that reduce abortions, including sex ed and not the abstinance-only "education" that has been shown to increase abortions rates and sexually transmitted diseases.

Obama is trying to be even with women voters who voted to Hillary and now switching to McCain. Wow! he is so revengeful - And he preaches Bible!

angie, HP Boston - Abortion should also be up to the baby as well. Keep it in your pants, and keep the legs shut. Stop the killing, whether it be in wars or the womb.

hey aboration sucks hp boston what if the woman was raped or it was incest or life threating you know the comments you made are disgusting dont you have a little class???
Posted by: angie | Jun 25, 2008 1:52:12 PM
Less than 1% is due to rape or incest. This is according to planned parenthood's statistic makers. Almost all abortions are due to irresponsibility. Your comments disgust me as well. Legitimizing murder is disgusting.

OBAMA is just campaign rhetoric that is so old. Obama tells his audience that John McCain “opposed legislation to fund levees and flood control programs, which he considers pork”. How far can someone go to CHANGE THE TRUTH without so much a comment from the press? Talk about people in Obama’s pockets and in America of all places where the “press” was truthful and informative but are now letting the people down. The bill was to cost the tax payers some $23 billion dollars and was nothing more than a waste of taxpayer’s money because it was full of earmarks and very little for flood control. You know that wasteful spending that Obama himself wants says he is trying to get rid of. What Obama did not tell you is that John McCain and other senators tried to fix the water bill, and get rid of the “pork” and make it a bill that would not waste the taxpayer’s money and get the job done. What Obama did not tell you is that Obama voted against taking the “pork” out of the bill---he voted “nay”. Obama stands for politics-as-usual, more lies and corruption. It is John McCain who stands for change. The amendment steered the money and efforts toward stronger levees and not putting money into politician’s earmarks….like the huge earmark of 17 million that Obama’s church received.

angie - In a situation suck as rape, incest, or in the case you describe, careful consideration must be given to the situation at hand. This is an extremely small number statistically speaking. What I rail against is the abortion on demand that people like you believe is a woman's given right. What about the right's of the baby. Abortion is merely society's answer to an immoral people not being able to practice any moral disipline when it comes to their dealings with the opposite sex.
