ABC News' Kirit Radia Reports: A day after the presidential primary season came to an official close, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice extended her congratulations to presumptive nominees Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Barack Obama, D-Ill., as well as Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for their campaigns.

Rice, the highest ranking African-American in the U.S. government, highlighted the significance of Obama's achievement as the first African-American to be nominated as a candidate for the presidency by a major party.

"The United States of America is an extraordinary country," she said. "It is a country that has overcome many, many, now years, decades, actually a couple of centuries of trying to make good on its principles. And I think what we are seeing is an extraordinary expression of the fact that 'We the people' is beginning to mean all of us."

Rice, who has been rumored as a possible vice presidential running mate for McCain, seemed to once again reject that chatter saying, "I look forward to viewing it all on the sidelines as a voter."

Only in the republican party could one of the planners of the biggest mistake in US history, the Iraq War, be floated as a possible VP candidate. Way to aim high pubs!

Rice will not be a VP for old McSame, that will be a disaster for her. Having worked for HBush and WBush, that is enough to take care of, McSame will be too much he has temper, great ego.

Dr. Rice could have had the Presidency in November had she wanted it. There is no comparison of Rice to Obama. Obama will bring the country to its knees very quicly. Rice would have brought dignity and not hate.

after all we have gone through in the greatest country in the world.now at the moment where we as americans, all americans can unite togrther and actually do some thing that will change the world we live in. if not for us but our children.gender, race, religon,or politicle beleafs should deture us all from doing the right thing.and the right thing to do is choose the candidate that will bring solidarity to the world we live in.some of you ask the question does senator Obama has the credentials to lead america the beautiful.my question to all who think like this.out all the candidate who ran on either side, democrate or republican has the experience to lead our country or the world out of the current situation the Bush administation has left it in? this is a matter that needs the the help of God almighty.so if we as americans can look past our selfish aspects and concentrate on the bigger picture ,casting your vote for Senator Obama is the only logical thing to do.

It is unfortunate that gender and race are being considered as "credentials" for any political office, but being a realist, they are a factor in this election. As vp candidates, I think Hillary and Rice have the intelligence, skills, and life experience to do the job required for their respective parties. Unfortunately for the Democrats, Hillary doesn't have the disposition to be the VP. The Pres needs to count on his VP to deliver the message of the administration... nothing more. In addition to offering advice and perspective to the adminstration, the VP has a long list of boring responsibilities including entertaining other heads of states, attending funerals, etc. while repeating the administration's message (or position of the day) without promoting any additional agenda. It is not within Hillary's dna to carry water for anyone else. She is (justifiable) fed up with doing this for her husband where she had no "office". Condoleezza Rice, on the other hand, has demonstrated the ability to perform all of these duties. One doesn't have to think very long about who has MORE intelligence or experience when comparing Rice and H. Clinton... but each have adequate to do the job as vp.

By selecting Rice as vp, the Republicans would secure the presidency for 12 years - four for McCain and eight for Rice.

What a wonderful thought, an African American women as Vice President and President of the United States. But, gender and race aside, Condoleezza Rice is a brilliant person who is capable of leading our country.
