Romney Comes to McCain's Defense, but Avoids "VP Speculation"
June 24, 2008 5:27 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports: Former Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney hit the airwaves today on behalf of the McCain campaign, defending the presumptive Republican nominee after controversial comments from McCain advisor Charlie Black but he refused to comment on the Vice Presidential selection.
Appearing on MSNBC, Romney dismissed the controversy regarding Charlie Black's comments to Fortune magazine that a terrorist attack would benefit John McCain politically. Romney claimed that the comments of a campaign strategist have "little to do with the policy of an individual," while arguing that McCain "understands foreign policy" and that any one "thinking of security and foreign policy" will say "John McCain's the man for me."
Later, in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Romney said he would "leave [it] to the pundits," to decide if such an attack would actually benefit McCain.
Romney was also asked about suggestions that he is being considered for the position of Vice President, but Romney chose not to comment. On MSNBC, Romney claimed it was "fair to say I'm not willing to speculate on the VP sweepstakes," adding that McCain had a lot of terrific people to choose from and he wouldn't "make any comments on VP."
Romney went a bit further when asked by CNN's Blitzer if the McCain had asked for documents to begin the vetting process. "No," Romney replied, "I know that John McCain has a lot of great people to choose from." Romney claimed he was "avoiding the VP speculation all together."

I don't believe Romney is going to get the nod; that is going to Alaska Gov Sarah Palin.

Romney WOULD be an excellent choice for McCain's running mate... almost as good as Hillary would be.
COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY!!!

I agree, I think McCain/Romeny balances the ticket and is our sort of our dream ticket for republicans. McCain makes a great commander and chief and Romney for the social and domestic policies.

I've tried to take an unbiased view in this whole process and I have to say that a McCain/Romney ticket is what works best for the party. I really don't see anyone else out there with the same national recognition or polished experience as Romney to make a substantial difference for the Republicans. If you look at the swing states (Minnesota, Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, etc.) polling right now, I think it is fair to see why Romney is the only one with enough influence and pull to beat the Democratic machine this up and coming election. Besides Romney has far proven himself to you Republican sceptics of his intentions with the Republican party. He's donated millions, helped fundraise millions, and has given hundreds of hours of his time to the Republican cause. How many of you sceptics out there can say the same of yourself? This is truely a man (as an unbiased opinion) that I can respect for taking a stand on what he believes to be in the country's best interest.

If you want more on Romney possibly becoming McCain's VP check out his interview on Newsmax.TV! Romney outwardly doesn't agree with all of McCain's points, but regardless is supporting him incredibly. In my opinion that is a true Vice President

Republicans have apostacized so far from principle that it would be unconscionable to reward them for it. Obama advocates an alternative that is equally unsupportable. The option of Bob Barr is often touted as a vote for Obama, as if McCain somehow owns your vote and that you are stealing if you do not deliver it to him.
But let’s be honest here: McCain is not going to beat Obama. McCain is slipping in the polls for a number of reasons: He is too old (and will just keep getting older), he seems mentally slow and emotionally unstable.
On top of that, McCain was NOT the choice of Republicans in the primaries. He consistently had about 2/3 of Republicans voting against him, but the better candidates split the vote enough to let McCain get 33% in South Carolina and 33% in Missouri, and win those states despite the 2/3 opposition.
Come September, conservatives are going to wake up and realize that McCain is already done, and the only thing standing between America and a President Obama is getting behind Bob Barr!

Thank you Harve, for that intelligent remark. I too think that the fuss about Romney's mormonism is overly exaggerated in politics these days. Honestly his faith doesn't bother me as much as Obama's stance on our economic and public affairs. I think that Obama definitely is a pretty sharp looking guy, but he has nothing to actually back him up. I really do not think he is ready to be President for America. We need someone like Romney to take on our foreign affairs and economic issues as well as taking a stance on preserving the nature of the family unit. Romney has my vote 100% even though he is not the nominee this upcoming election, though I hope he is picked to be VP. McCain should pick Romney as his VP if he wants to win the election. Romney will keep McCain in line during a McCain Administration period. Mitt 4 Veep!!!

My guess is that most republicans are scared about November. They realize now they should have gone with Romney.
Yes, McCain is strong on foreign affairs. However, Americans are also worried about the direction of government and the economy. Romney can help here.
I hope McCain makes the right decision.
