Spokesman: Obama Decision to Leave Church Not Politically Motivated
June 01, 2008 12:58 PM
ABC News' Ben Newman reports: Sen. Barack Obama's decision to cut ties with Trinity United Church of Christ was not politically motivated, Obama's communications director Robert Gibbs said this morning.
"I think what [decision] Barack Obama made in the past few days is a deeply personal, not political decision," Gibbs said in an exclusive appearance on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” (Click HERE for video of Gibbs' appearance).
A member of the church for 20 years, Obama faced mounting criticism for his relationship to Trinity after videos from a number of controversial sermons by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and, more recently, by the Rev. Michael Pfleger appeared on the Internet.
In April, Obama responded to growing concern over his relationship with Wright, the church’s former pastor, saying, "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community."
Gibbs said Obama's decision to leave was not directly related to Wright's comments or Father Pfleger's May 25 sermon in which he mocked Hillary Clinton, but was also linked to the church's uncomfortable and reluctant position in the media spotlight.
"They couldn't do what members of a church do,” Gibbs said. “They were subject to a media circus that continues today."
Stephanopoulos pressed Gibbs on the convenient timing of the announcement and speculation the Obama may be linked to other controversial sermons, but Gibbs asserted Obama consulted with his family and the church community before making a decision.
“He thought [it] was best for his family, best for his church," Gibbs said. "He understands that he's still a strong Christian, that his faith endures, and he'll look for a new church home."

NOT POLITICALLY MOTIVATED, yeah, right, announced right in the middle of the deliberation by the Rules Committee, the outcome of which represented the disenfranchisement of 600,000 Michigan voters. He was after one thing and one thing only, divert the headlines away from the Michigan debacle, in which he stold votes from the voters, and from Hillary Clinton. Don't give me "well it wasn't even supposed to count" garbage, the only reason he took his name off the ballot is because the polls showed he would be crushed. He ran an active robo-calling campaign for uncommitteed votes. I do admit he is a very sly politicisan, or at least Axelrod is. Obama is ALL ABOUT politics as usual surrounded by the same usual suspects, a bunch of liberal losers.

"America will be safe in Obama's hands while you come to grips with a new 3-D reality."
America safe in Obama's hands? I hope you're kidding. When he is POTUS, God help America, because he will leave the kitchen everytime he can't stand the heat.
When Ahmadinejad has him in a corner, what do you think he is going to do?

He may have left the church, but he will practice what has been preached. You can take the man out of the church, but you can't take the church out of the man.

Who cares if he left his church and who cares if its politically motivated? He is running for president and it is his policy decisions that matter.
As a Christian, this is all stuff that would bother me if Obama were going to be a bishop or a pastor, but he's not. In a society that is suppose to keep church and state separate a good president can be of any or no religion.

Well it is politically motivated in a real sense. But long over due.
Anyway, Obama is the best candidate.
That comment by Ickies about the Deomratic Party "hijacking" the nomination, should be repudiated.
Clinton is on a scortched earth policy!

Right, not politically motivated. This was a personal decision to try to get white people to support him. but it has nothing to do with politics. "Change"? I don't think so

If this wasn't politically motivated, we wouldn't even know about it.

The only problem is, we are potentially replacing a POTUS who has religion, morally weak but who has backbone with one who has weak religion, weak morals and no backbone.......

Nice try, Obama.
20+ years of visiting weekly and now that you're a candidate for president you suddenly decide it is time for you to leave the church and expect us to buy that it is not politically motivate?
I guess you can fool some of the people... but not me.

what can i say.... did you all see he comes from a very racially motivated church....
America..... watch out

As the liberal Democrat adult child of a (now deceased) Republican right-winged fundamentalist minister, I can appreciate Obama's cunundrum. Although there is no Constitutional religious test for office, there will forever be the people's test in that we cannot sever ourselves completely from our religious or biological genealogy. I would hope that thinking Americans can rationalize that Obama, although shaped by his family and religious ties, is an intelligent, compassionate person who has the integrity and intellect to lead the nation in the changes that are so desperately needed.

but then thinking about it.... hard to believe he subscribes to any of those views

Finally, here are the cracks in the PR image. The man is a politician. D'uh. Too bad it's taken this long for his negatives to emerge. We could have had a truly vetted candidate so that the general campaign could have been about the issues. Now we're in for a half a year of nasty revelations how much american voters have once again been played for fools.

Unfortunately, everything lil thing Sen. Obama does is dissected in the media. Remember the pancake incident? Alot of the hate is being created by the media and unfortunately many feed into it. He is our next President regardles of what many may feel. To all of those choosing McCain if not Hillary, how sad. We owe it to the 4000+ men and women who have lost their lives in the senseless war CHANGE. Please for the sake of the US lets unite. I am a Democrat behind Sen. Obama.

Damage Control Again
Obama said he was saddened by leaving the church and of course he would NOT denounce the philosophy because he believes the philosophy...so why leave the church? Because he is in an Election where people do not think a man running for such a high office should sit and listen to sermons of "hate against whites" every Sunday. And, no one believes that he was just there to pray and never heard any of the sermons. So nothing is over---this man's judgment is really awful. Wonder what he has instore for all America?

Who cares if it is politically motivated.
Everything candidates do is politically motivated.
So what?
Posted by: maritza | Jun 1, 2008 2:32:45 PM
What? It's not politically motivated?
We understand Obama was forced to resign from the church and forced to give the "race speech" in order to get elected.
So don't lie to Americans' faces, please.

If he expects me to believe that, he's dumber than he thought I was. But he need not worry overly much. There are plenty of people out there who 'ARE' as dumb as he thought they were!

I do make my decisions based on real issues, and Obama never takes a stand on real issues. He either flip flops, backpedals, or steals Hillary's answers. Everything this man has done since his college days are certainly politically motivated, no thinking person can honestly believe he is leaving this church for any other reason.

Obama Decision to run for the President was also Not Politically Motivated.
