The Note: Pressure on Clintons as Democrats Seek Unity

Share

June 25, 2008 9:12 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports in Wednesday's Note: It’s unity week for the Democrats -- and watch this tense tango: Hillary Clinton two-steps toward togetherness, Barack Obama congas for comity (with a fandango of a phone call) -- and Bill Clinton manages to shimmy out a statement.

While we ponder Sen. Obama’s star choices (Samuel L. Jackson or Don Cheadle? Heidi Klum or Cindy Crawford?) and taste preferences (fruitcakes or martinis? -- combine them both and you have a drink worthy of “Sex and the City,” female outreach settled) . . . a few questions to frame the day:

How many more polls like this before there’s real panic in the GOP? (Answer: One.)

How many more panel discussions can turn into debates before there’s a real-shakeup inside the McCain operation? (Answer: None -- and two more foreign trips next week? Is he seeing an electoral map we’re not?)

Read the rest of The Note -- and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day -- from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.

Is this one of those weeks where it’s good to be a candidate/senator or bad to be a candidate/senator? (Answer: Depends on the senator.)

How many more ads like this before Obama’s upside is formally declared to outweigh his downside in down-ballot races? (Answer: Three.)

Is Ralph Nader trying to say things politicians just don’t say? (Answer: Yes.)

How carefully will Bill Clinton have to choose his words when he puts his endorsement into action? (Answer: Very.) How many of those words will be unscripted? (Answer: None.)

dl,

HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT HILLARY ISN'T GONNA BE VP? WHO IS IT, THEN?

Posted by: neil1785 | Jun 25, 2008 10:53:38 AM

It's going to be Biden.

Posted by: dl | Jun 25, 2008 10:56:36 AM

Keep your dream Liberals and DNC Leaders. Soon you will know why you always are the losers in this coming November again.

and he already has shown that he is the attack dog that knows the ground and has the veritas...that someone needs in a Vice President running with them.

Posted by: dl | Jun 25, 2008 11:08:00 AM

I think Biden would make an excellent running mate.

OBAMA NEEDS THE CLINTONS THEY DON'T NEED HIM> IF HE IS SMART HE WILL CHOSE H ILLARY AS HIS VICE PRESIDENT, AFTER ALL HE STABBED HER IN THE BACK BY STEALING ALL HER SOLUTIONS AND CALLING THEM CHANGE WITH A WORD HERE AND THERE DIFFERENT. HOARD DEAN MADE A WOOPER OF A MISTAKE THE PERSON MOST QUALIFIED WITH THE GUMPTION AND THE FIGHT TO GET THINGS DONE WAS STOMPED ON AND THRWON AWAY NOW THE BHO HAS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN DISGRACE mE I WILL TYPE IN HILLARY COME NOVEMBER NOT VOTING FOR MCBUSH OR OBAMA UNLESS HILLARY IS VP

rose

so the other 18 million voters dont count?

Posted by: bhrandon | Jun 25, 2008 11:16:25 AM

seah

It must be cold standing in that lonely room.

Obama has a lot of ideas..but yes...most of his ideas come from many people...

that is the candidate we want.

That is not a sham.

a good manager is one who manages many other ideas...not just their own.

and if you actually went and read his plans you would see his plans are much more detailed than McCain's...and many of McCain's"new" ideas...were ones that Obama's team (somewhat out of necessity because of the primary) laid out a long time ago.

and I would guess Obama took those ideas from other people who laid them out a long time ago.

but overall Obama is the candidate because his LOGIC is better.

that is the bottom line.

Rose, Obama did not disgrace the party. Where would you even get that. The country was split down the middle. They both received 18 million votes. And all the Clintons wanted was to extend their legacy by having Hillary as pres. They felt an entitlement to it.

Can't we all come together Dems???? YES WE CAN!! We are all one family!!!!!

Posted by: Peace | Jun 25, 2008 11:21:21 AM

erin,

Almost half of those 18 million votes that Obama won were earned before his scandals. A lot of them have been undegoing buyer's remorse since then. That's why those 18 million should be down bya significant number. That's why he would need Hillary to help him get elected as President as his runningmate.

Posted by: neil1785 | Jun 25, 2008 11:25:47 AM

POSSUM is not a democrat but a far right radical so it is absurb to talk about unifying the Democratic Party. It no longer exists. But Obama needs her support and voters. I certainly hope he loses and is forced back to his corrupt Chicagao homestead. He is wrong for America.

As long as Hillary isn't running for president, I'm happy. Obama or McCain.

Posted by: GetaLife | Jun 25, 2008 11:30:04 AM

neil, how do you know almost half of the 18 million have buyers remorse. I don't and my state will definately vote Obama. But it all boils down to the swing states. I think Pa will go dem because of Rendell. And there is a very good chance that Va will also go dem. And I think having Hillary as his running mate is a bad idea. We need to get away from the Clinton and Bush dynasties. But I do think she needs a position in his cabinet.

Posted by: erin | Jun 25, 2008 11:32:34 AM

erin,

I never said that half of 18 million votes he earned have buyers remorse. I said a lot of those half have.

Posted by: neil1785 | Jun 25, 2008 11:36:10 AM

Neil

the numbers are saying overhwlelmingly differently from the idea that people were having "buyers remorse"...

and Erin

I think there is only one role that she REALLY sees as possible that she would want in the cabinet...and that might be sec of state.

there is a slim chance that obama would pick her out of respect for the campaign...and believe it or not maybe even wanting her because of despite the anger...they have a familiar history now that I bet he respects...

but they both would be put in a fuinky situation if he chose her for VP and to be honest it would hurt him more than help him...sorry to her supporters but the numbers show that...she always had a low ceiling unfortunately)

she might want the sec of state ...maybe even partly just to make sure Richardson doesn't get it...but I think she is going to do what the pundits say and take the Ted Kennedy route...especially, rpobably and sadly because Ted kennedy is not going to be around for much longer in that full capacity he was (as sad as that is to say)...

She has a knew opportunity to have the respect of the senior elder of the congress without having the actual official seniority...ya know.

but women dont like mccain because hes a polar opposite to womens issues. It doesnt matter how many times he says my friends he still is opposed to issues that women have always been very pro.

------------------------------------
Look we do NOT have to LIKE McCain.
WE do have to VOTE for him!
WHY? Because WE CAN!

Posted by: HP Boston | Jun 25, 2008 11:49:50 AM

dl, let's face it, the VP really doesn't do much and I just can't see her wanting or accepting that position. And then you have to wonder what Bill would do. But you're right. She could be a real powerhouse in the Senate if she stays. I think it would be a smart move on her part if she did that.
