Webb Targets Drug-Sentencing Laws

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Alexa Ainsworth Report: Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (D), the former Reagan Navy Secretary and Obama V.P. prospect, convened a hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday to argue that the United States needs to focus on the demand for drugs if it wants to reduce its large prison population relative to other countries in the world.

"We are focusing on the numbers of people, the incredible growth of the prison population in the criminal justice system," said Webb. "I mention that we have 5 percent of the world's population and 25 percent of the world's known-prison population."

The impact of drug policy on the nation's large prison population has been of sustained interest to Webb.

He devotes a chapter in "A Time to Fight," his new book, to what he considers the foolishness of mandatory drug-sentencing laws.

Joining Webb at Thursday's hearing of the Joint Economic Committee was Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., who argued that the United States needs to redirect its drug-fighting efforts.

"The focus and the spending on supply really doesn’t do anything," said Hinchey. "The real issue is demand".

We lost the War on Drugs a long time ago. And geevill, I guess McCain backers get a free ride, like perfect Cindy? Or are you still waiting for the resurrection of Hillary -- didn't brother-in-law Roger Clinton have a bit of an inconvenient drug problem?

Using street drugs is against the law and is the cause of many other crimes. If they are going to decriminalize drug users, why not bank robbers and thieves. No one forced these people to start using drugs except their own foolish whims and actions. Drug users make the streets and communities unsafe and costs taxpayers billions. Yes, drug users are criminals.

Get the non-violent offenders out so we can put the real dangerous violent people IN, instead of out on parole due to overcrowding. And put the drug addicts in rehab were they belong, so they will get clean, not continue to use in prison, and not re-offend. But this definitely wont happen cause politicans need to look tough on crime, private companies who own prisions only get their stock price up if they've got bodies to fill those beds. They can pay inmates $0.10 for every $1.00 they spend on labor otherwise. They need to lock up as many people as they can, to get them into the system and feed the beast of big government. They're familes go on welfare and their children become wards of the state or in foster care. This is BIG MONEY we're talking here... So you won't see any reform or emphasis on rehabilitation, and contributing to society anytime soon from the prison system. WHY, because they're is no money in it silly! And the hypocrisy ensues, and the suffering to the taxpayer and the incarcerated (let alone the victims families when overpopulation forces the violent offenders back out on the streets while the non violent drug offenders get mandiatory sentencing) will continue unabated. But don't worry, we're still tough on crime. When theses unrehabilitated prisoners get back on the street, they'll just take all that they learned in prison during the time they were incarcerated back on the street and re-offend. What else are they gonna do. And the police just get more money for more training and more weapons. So what if crime can only get worse. After all, they gotta have SOMETHING to do with all of that tax money they collect, don't they???

Virginia are certainly blessed with a great Junior Senator. Finally in an election year someone is talking sense about drugs.

I don't know anyone who does not take some type of drug. To put people in prison for long periods of time because of "illegal" drug use is something that should have been addressed many years ago. Let's remember alcohol was once illegal. Good Job Senator Webb! Something needs to be done and soon!

Finally; the authorities are coming to their senses and acknowleging our Constitution and rights. Plus; marijuana is NOT harmful, only the people making money and avoiding paying taxes on it wants it to remain illegal. Stop making excuses and working for drug dealers....if they want the profits they have to accept that taxes MUST be paid on it. Only crooks want to keep it illegal. It will also give the Mexican people an income to help them live, it's one of the few popular exports that they have. Only a cold, cruel, hard-hearted person could deny them the right to sell what little they have. ESPeCIALLY those crooks who scream for Free Trade. Tell us criminals...free for WHOM?? Yeah, we know what you're up to know. Deal with it and get over it. Or go to jail yourselves and lose everything you got.
Because we're coming after you selfish, ggreedy cruds.

Webb's whims pose the greatest threat to America's security.

Drug sentencing laws have nothing to do with reducing drug use or crime for the un-informed commenters above, what it does is give insane sentences to non-violent first time offenders. 90% could have been given 1 year and learned their lesson well. Prisons do not rehabilitate they only incarcerate. My stepson is serving 15 years for 1 marijuana cigarette because a young man who was caught in a high school with 4 ounces said he got from my stepson. The young man that was dealing to all of your children never served a day in jail. He made a deal to set up my stepson, the only problem was he thought since my stepson didn't actually supply him he would get off too. Now combine that with a less than reputable judge and an incompetant attorney that makes his money off of failed appeals and a jury of people like you that believe if the police say its true then it must be true. I pray to god your children are never arrested for anything involving drugs or you would quickly come over to the side of reason and leave the place of insanity where you now reside.
