Webb to Make Appearance in Virginia with Obama

June 05, 2008 8:11 AM

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf and Sunlen Miller Report: One of the last uncommitted Democrats in the Senate, moderate Jim Webb, D-Va., will join Senate colleague and presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama for campaign appearances in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC Thursday, according to Webb's Senate office.

Webb will introduce Obama at an evening rally in Bristol, Va.

Webb, considered a potential vice presidential candidate because he could bolster Obama's defense credentials and help deliver newly purple states like Virginia, is a former Republican, Vietnam veteran and Pentagon official during the Reagan Presidency.

He had not, until today, officially endorsed a Presidential candidate.

At a mid-day town hall meeting in Bristol, Va., Obama will be joined by former Virginia governor and Senate candidate Mark Warner. Obama's afternoon remarks will be focused on health-care.

Anybody know much about Jim Webb? I'm an Obama supporter and would like to know more about him. Any place a person can do research?

Obama-Webb could win it all!

Neil- whenever one party is divided the other party benefits...an independent HRC bid cannot win and guarantees a McCain win.

Lynne asks, >>> "Anybody know much about Jim Webb? I'm an Obama supporter and would like to know more about him. A conservative Democrat who is opposed to the war in Iraq. He also has a son serving in Iraq. Hope this helps.

Dig up Jim Webb's Democratic response to the State of the Union address, it was either 2006 or 2007. He looked and sounded presidential, I said to myself at the time that this would be the man to step up in '08. I cannot imagine Obama looking past him as a Veep. A true moderate with a sense of leadership to regulate a senate that will be taxed with legislation of all kinds.
Great days ahead, indeed.

I AGREE ABOUT OBAMA, HE BOUGHT HIS WAY TO THE
TOP. I DO NOT TRUST HIM TO RUN AMERICA. I AM
ALSO UPSET WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND WILL
NEVER GIVE THEM ONE CENT OF MY MONEY AND I
WILL NOT VOTE IN NOV.
PEOPLE SHOULD PICKET ALL HIS CAMPAIGNS AND
SHOW THAT WE DO NOT SUPPORT HIS RIGHT TO
BE PRESIDENT DUE TO HIS TIES WITH SHADY PEOPLE
AND HE IS NOT EXPERIENCED ENOUGH TO LEAD THE
COUNTRY. DO WE JUST BURY OUR HEADS IN THE SAND???. THIS IS OUR COUNTRY AND WE DO HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CONTINUE TO HAVE OUR VOICES HEARD! I AM SICK OF THE WAY THE MEDIA
AND THE DELEGATES ABUSED HILLARY. I AM AFRAID THIS COUNTRY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
I LOVE AMERICA AND AM ASHAMED THAT OBAMA
AND HIS WIFE HAS JUST STARTED TOO ,NOW THAT
THEY ARE MOVING INTO THE WHITE HOUSE, NO DOUBT!

What I hear is a lot of closet bigotry speak....at least, try to be honest folks...this country is on a seriously bad track....more of the same politics will only produce more of the same. Time for big changes whether you bigots want to see an AA in office or not?

OK ~ Saying that you will not vote, is not the best route to take. If you are a "True Democrat", why would you not support your party? If, Hilary had won, you best believe I would be running to the polls to vote for her in November!! Why? Because, we can not afford to let another Republican run this country into an economic slump. I don't think Obama can change everything that is wrong but he can change a lot for the better instead of continuing to take us into a downward spiral. Please re-think what you are saying and accept the fact that Hilary lost. As a woman (but an Obama supporter) I think she was strong in her campaign and did not concede (give up). She ran an awsome and commendable campaign.
Let's not be devided!! That is what they want. :O)

Amidst all the silly babbling posts, one poster asked for more info. about Jim Webb. There is a good bio on Wikipedia.com. Webb is a moderate Democrat with extensive military and foreign policy experience. He has much more experience than Hillary, and much more military background than McCain. He is very strong on defense and the war on terrorism, but clearly against the war in Iraq.

Only thing about Webb is... he is pretty conservative toward women in the military. Feminists (who are different from me) would probably object to some of his stances.

Jim Webb would be a perfect VP pick...he was the secretary of the navy under Reagen and has a son in the military in IRAQ...he is a tough no nonsense intellectual leader. He has written extensively about the most successful ethnic group which he is a member...the scots-irish mostly an ethnic group that was rooted in hills and mountains of Appalachia...He can deliver this very important group to Obama

randygrenier, may I politely offer a caveat about using Wikipedia? As a journalist, we all have one rule about web research -- never use Wikipedia. It's a fun site to check out, but often not reliable factually.

Joyce, I make it a habit never to read any posts made in all caps. The same way I won't listen if someone screams.

Hillary Clinton did not run a fair campaign. She an a *by any means necessary" attitude. Many times Obama treated he with respect and she ignored it. Many time, including her remark about Robert Kennedy, he defended her and she never acknowledged it. He refused to run a negative campaign no matter what she did. That doesn't make her the better person. He never tried to discredit her in any way. She has questionable ties. She has former fund raisers that have been in trouble with the law. One such person staged a large concert event in California starring Cher and Diana Ross, for her last NY senate race. There were pictures of her and Bill sitting next to the guy at the event, but when the law got after him for his illegal dealing, she said she did actually meet him. I did not make this up. Let us now forget her dangerous Bosnia trip where on 3 different occasions she lied about it. Obama defended her and said sometimes people make mistakes when they are tired and speaking a lot.

Webb won't pull in the Clinton women that may jump ship to McCain because the media and McCain will be all over some of his sexist statements he made in regards to women and the military.
He touts his blue collar roots but aspires to be the next Daniel Moynihan.
He seems himself as the elitist intellectual who can still connect with his blue collar roots. He's military and he didn't endorse either Obama or Clinton. He and Clinton sponsored a bill about a week after Kyle Lieberman to ensure Bush couldn't attack Iran without Congressional approval. If I were going to go with someone on the order of a Webb I'd go with Wesley Clark, who is a strong Clinton supporter
and who wouldn't be as big of a turn off to women as Webb inevitably will be.
I'm sure Obama is considering him though because of his touting his blue collar roots in particular in the Appalachia (in fact I believe Webb wrote a book about sub-culture) and his foreign policy or military experience.
Personality wise though, in comparison to someone like a Clark, Obama looks like a wuss next to a Webb and I don't know if Obama would want that.

Please blog facts about the candidates. If you do not have your facts, don't blog what you hear from the news media because they are too bias. Do your own research and analysis.

JPayne Give it a break. The citizen journalist who sent the email saying Clinton had made an odd reference to RFK when talking about her being in the campaign so long (and this journalist didn't say much more than that in the email) set off the Obama camp sending out emails with a spin around the RFK comment and they made a response almost immediately even though the entire comment or context wasn't fully known.
The Obama camp did a spin on that comment and then by the time the ruckus has been generated Obama can graciously
respond or dismiss. The Obama camp is old politics, not new politics, it's just improved upon old politics. They beat the Clinton machine, their roots are in the corrupt politics of Chicago and Axelrod who's built a whole career on getting African American candidates elected, is as slimy as a Mark Penn. Don't delude yourself. There's absolutely nothing new about Obama.

So, who is the lesser of two evils? McCain or Obama?
