AFL-CIO Mailing Seeks to Dispel Obama Rumors
July 29, 2008 4:43 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and James Gerber Report: The AFL-CIO has sent out a mail piece to "600,000 union swing voters' households" seeking to dispel rumors about Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., regarding the American flag, the Bible, Christianity, whether he was born in the U.S., and whether he puts his hand over his heart for the pledge of allegiance.
The front of the flier reads, "Have questions about Barack Obama? See inside for answers."
The mailing then provides short rebuttals to a variety of false rumors about the presumptive Democratic nominee. It reads:
Q: "Does he wear a flag pin?"
A: "Yes, but not always. Like many presidential candidates, sometimes he wears a flag pin, sometimes he wears a breast cancer awareness pin, sometimes he wears his U.S. Senate membership pin and other times he wears no pin at all."
Q: "Is he a Christian?"
A: "Yes. He is a committed Christian. In 1985, he began working as a community organizer with a Christian church-based group seeking to improve the living conditions in poor Chicago neighborhoods."
Q: "Was he sworn in on the Bible?"
A: "Yes. Barack Obama took the oath of office on his personal family bible. It was Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison who was sworn in on the Koran."
Q: "Was he born in America?"
A: "Yes. Barack Obama's birth certificate indicates he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961, at 7:24 P.M."
Q: "Does he place his hand over his heart when he says the pledge?"
A: "Yes. Barack Obama always places his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance."
A second, more conventional mail piece, touts Obama's record on jobs, health care, and workers' rights.
The mail is going out to union voters in the battleground states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The strategy of confronting the rumors head-on mirrors the Obama campaign's decision to launch a website that performs a similar service, called Fight the Smears.

Good gravy. Some of these comments are frighteningly stupid. Are people really this poorly informed? Are people really this aggressively dense? Our country is in serious trouble....No wonder Bush got re-elected.....

This is a vital effort for Obama when you read the polls and see that double digit percentages of voters think he is a Muslim.

Nothing in life is certain but one thing I'm certain about is that BHO will NEVER get my vote.

It always amazes us Europeans how many stupid Americans there are. Your only chance of not devolving into a third world country right now is to elect Obama. Already under Bush your dollar is worth nothing to us...we are rich when we go to your country as the dollar is worth about half of what it used to be under Clinton. If McCain takes over, all the better for us, as we can buy up America with our Euros and pounds hahah. Go for the stupid old man!
Cheers,
A European in the US

These blogs seem so full of stupidity that it actually scares me. When I read these things I think of George Carlin’s comment “Think of how stupid the average person is and then realize that half of them are stupider than that.”
I support McCain because of his outstanding character and lifetime of service to our country and because he is a moderate who has worked extremely well with his colleagues on both sides of the political spectrum to cut waste and fraud in our government. I am not voting for Obama because of his lack of experience, his liberal “tax and spend” voting record and I am afraid that if he is elected he will surround himself with radicals -- as he seems to have done in the past.

If we really cared what you thought we would never had fought for our independence, and would still be paying taxes to support your royals, mate.

Obama is a marketing and PR package.
He came from no where with nothing and made into a candidate.
He is a motivational, mind conditioning speech, He uses as a High Pressure manipulation tool, a repetitive collection of what he wants people fo believe.
He remains to be clueless and has done nothing for america in all the years he has held and office.
He has voted Present when he did show up, not wanting to get involved.
He did not want to be held accountable for taking a stand on anything.
Today he continues to straddle the fence on most issues. Refuses to give details or commit to anything.
He is what marketing, PR and money has bought and paid for.
If Obama wins he will be a figure head of the government and the DNC and Nancy Pelosi and Reid will run the government. He will be the one to sweet talk the people and the world into what they want.
he also will have his Joshua plans, but they will have the power over the people.
God Bless America, We need it now, and we need someone other than Obama.
He is the one to fear, he is the one to destory Our America, those in doubt of that, Yes He can, Yes He will
You best re-examine Him, what he stands for and The reasons not to elect him to the highest job of the land.
His best friends and backers are extremely dangerous people, and they were the ones who paid for, and got him where he is today.
Say No to Obama and Say yes to America! Vote for anyone else.

"Lawrence, most people will agree that Mccain is as american as apple pie. And Obama? Lol."
JULIE-- why are you sooo STUPID? Who cares what "most" people THINK. Facts are universal; Obama is American because it was written in our constitution that in order to run for president you had to be a NATURAL-BORN AMERICAN; that which he is. Why is that?? becuase you are RAISED to embrace the freedom that is guaranteed by the constitution and therefore breed it more so. Being American is beyond physical and more psychological.
What state are you from?? So I can make sure to never visit!

I am voting for Barack, but I am convinced that no matter what he says or does, even if God himself gave him the nod of approval, America is not ready for an African American president, and he CAN NOT win!! Clearly McCain is an angry, confused idiot, but America would vote for a stick figure before it allowed Barack Huessein Obama be president. Oh well four more years of the same. The rich get richer and the rest of us pick which bills to pay this month.

Hey Daniel,
If Europeans are so smart then why do they follow Americans rather than lead??? You don't see us looking to European leaders for answers, which is the case vice versa

Pitiful, but necessary because there are so many buffoons that will believe the lie more than the truth. Senator Obama is a wonderful man who has lived a life to be admired. He had nothing furnished by a wealthy family. He has earned his way with loans for college and hard work. This man is smart and surrounds himself with smart people. It is time that we put a smart person in the job, not another buffoon like McCain.

McCain's outstanding character huh? He's running a dirty and dishonorable campaign. He cheated on his first wife while she was still recovering from a debilitating accident. He has a bevy of lobbyists working on his campaign. He makes gaffe after gaffe and when confronted with actual video footage, he still denies he said it.
Outstanding character? I don't think so..

Guten Tag, European in the U.S.
I guess all that small change you collect from people before you let them use your filthy public restrooms must be the riches you're boasting of. And you're also saving money for not providing toilet seat covers.
Thanks for all your support to us in the aftermath of 9/11. Oh, and not to forget the enormous generosity of committing that large number of French and German troops for Afghanistan. With the exception of the U.K., you're all fair weather allies leaving the U.S. to clean up the world.
But that's okay, myn Europeesche gekke vriend: the world knows that old Europe has become impotent and irrelevant in the world arena. China and India have become the rising stars.
But I do see that you and Obama have a lot in common: when you see a bitter American clinging to her gun, your strategy is to run like hell with hanging tail.
Auf Wiederhoren"

Maariv, the Israeli newspaper that was criticized for publishing the note Obama left in the Western Wall (the "Wailing Wall"), now claims the note was leaked to it by the Obama campaign.
Israel Insider reports:
a Maariv spokesperson says that publication of the note was pre-approved for international publication by the Obama campaign, leading to the conclusion that the "private" prayer was intentionally leaked for public consumption.
Obama - still fooling some of the people all of the time!

@ Doubtful
America IS ready for an African American president. But it takes more than being African American to truly deserve peoples' votes. I am not voting for him because I know in my heart that you cannot center your life in a hateful, racist church for 20 years if you do not believe as they do. That is a no-brainer. I do not want a hateful, racist, divisive president, whose whole platform has been "unity."
It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. If ANYONE were to tell me that they sat in a racist, hate-filled church for 20 years but didn't believe as they did, I would absolutely not believe them.
Saying that Americans won't vote for Obama because he is African American is a cop-out. I'm tired of the race-baiting.

Hey A,
It's called an allegation, not a fact. so why not take it for what it is?
Posted by: LawrenceNY | Jul 29, 2008 7:23:29 PM
McCain is the one who will be surrounded by radicals. A good example was Phil Gramm who was right in the middle of the Enron debacle. The neocon republicans are so radical that I have been scared any minute these birdbrains would get us into another war. Looks like that will be just fine with McCain, and we will have more and more and more to worry about. Bush and his republican rubberstampers (McCain) have caused the horror that so many face every day with high gas prices, high food prices, the housing meltdown, widening job losses, and a drastic fall in the U.S. dollar. Yes, I really think McCain has so much on the ball. He has voted with Bush 95% of the time. So he has no record to be proud of. He has sold out with the corrupt who harm America.
