Veep Beat: Bayh 'Trying Not to Make News' on Obama VP Slot
July 20, 2008 10:23 AM
ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports: In an appearance on "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace," possible vice presidential pick Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., tried "not to make news" when asked if Sen. Barack Obama's, D-Ill., presidential campaign has requested documents from him as part of a vetting process.
"You know, that's their business, Chris, and I think you should direct those questions to them," said Bayh.
"I'm trying not to make news on that this morning, so I hope you'll forgive me, but truly, they've established a process, it's their process, and I think it's up to them to..."
Wallace then cut off the senator to press him on if he is part of this process.
"You know, I'd love to answer your question but I think I really can't," replied Bayh.
As he has done before, Bayh said he would accept an offer to be Obama's running mate, were he to be asked.
"Well, I've said that's not the sort of thing you'd say no to, Chris," Bayh said.
"Which means you'd say yes?" asked Wallace.
"Well, that's the type of thing you do say yes to, and I've said that, but you should probably ask Joe, he has more experience with the vice presidential questions than I do," joked Bayh.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., supporter and former Democratic vice presidential candidate, Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman appeared on the show alongside Bayh.

@dumble: Fascinating and brilliant political analysis from a partisan Republican.

Evan Bayh would be a perfect pick. Young, wholesome, family man, former governor and now senator in a "red state". Moderate head of the DLC with ties that go back to his liberal father Sen. Birch Bayh. And also a good friend and strong prior supporter of Hillary. He truly is the natural VP selection.

If he was going to pick Bayh...he would pick Edwards.
It's not going to be Bayh. The milktoast factor is too much.
Obama needs a little more "bull dog"...sorry he does.

Obama needs to pick a prominent Democrat from Ohio or Florida. If he loses both those states, he loses the election, enough said.

Robert good we know where you stand Vote for whom ever but when Obama takes the oath turn your tv off plzzzzzzzz.
He needs to choice whom he wants and can do the best for the COUNTRY.To bring it back to being a leader of this crazy world...

Ready to bet my house on it, our next vp is Jack reed.

Gov Sebelius or
Gov Napolitano
are the VP leaders.
Swim with them or sink with those LOYAL Governors.
Obama needs an experienced administrator to run the day-to-day affairs of the nation.
Defense expertise can be had from ex-military Cabinet members -- Kerry, Webb, Hagel, etc

Bayh would be a perfect fit. A successful governor who balanced budgets, attracted investment, and oversaw economic growth and job creation. Make no mistake - This election will be about the ECONOMY and JOBS. People are hurting, and Evan Bayh has a proven track record in both areas.
Plus the national security expertise.
Edwards couldn't even carry his own state, and is yesterday's news. Biden can't bring the economic credibility. Sebelius has ZERO foreign policy experience.
Bayh has all of these, and is young and good looking. Both Obama and Bayh have pretty wives and beautiful children. In a media-infatuated country, that goes a long way.
EVAN BAYH FOR VP!

quote....Both Obama and Bayh have pretty wives and beautiful children. In a media-infatuated country, that goes a long way.....
.
Distressingly true! What a sad sorry state we've devolved down to when the beauty of a candidate's spouse and children matters to anyone but the candidate

Charlie 35, there's nothing wrong with having a beautiful wife and children to look at when you know they will be photographed over and over again. What about Jackie and John and Caroline. It was good for the country then, it will be good for the country now. We need some "family" in the White House....please.

Charlie - I am neither saying that a candidate's physical appearance (and that of his/her family) is a good thing or a bad thing. It's simply a fact that it matters to people in our media-crazed society. In 1992 people saw two handsome young and fresh-faced southerners (Clinton and Gore) as the symbol fo change from these stodgy old senile conservatives.
Peg mentioned the Kennedys. Again, without making a statement on the pros and cons of being photogenic, the simple fact is that an Obama-Bayh ticket would be very attractive.
In my view, the most important attribute that Bayh brings is his track record as Governor of Indiana. Economic Growth. Balanced Budget. Job Creation. Attracting investment. If McCain picks an economic heavyweight for VP (and he likely will since that is his weakness), Obama had better have somebody like Evan Bayh who can say: "I've created jobs in the Midwestern rustbelt. I've been an executive that has balanced budgets. I've attracted investment."
Simply having a foreign policy expert ain't gonna satisfy peoples economic anxieties.

Bayh? Wow, talk about "not change".

It's going to be Biden
Reed unfortunately is too short...he and Obama look like a circus act standing next to each other.
Bayh is referenced so much because of foreign policy and youth...but I am not sure what everyone is talking about...he has about as much foreign policy as ...Edwards. and yuo don't pick a guy because he can carry a smaller home state when another blue collar guy will carry that same state.
It's going to be biden...as far as economics... that is not the issue the VP candidate for obama is going to be picked on because Mccain is so much worse...
even if McCain picked Romney ...Biden would still kick his butt in the debates on economics... all he has to do is point to the shambles Massachusetts was left in.
How his healthcare policy that he touted during the primaries has sh#t the bed...the building issues on his watch...the transportation and infrastructure issues he screwed up.
At this point I thought reed was the only other possibility until I saw the photos of them standing together in Afghanistan...and I realized they will probably not be standing with each other at the convention...
and thus the pics they have been releasing from Iraq...none have Reed next to Obama in the shot.
