Gore To Issue Clean Energy Challenge

Share

July 17, 2008 9:40 AM

ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman Reports: In a speech on global warming Thursday, former Vice President Al Gore will challenge the nation to make a complete shift to Earth-friendly energy sources within the next ten years.

In an interview with the Associated Press previewing the speech, Gore says his power goal is "an investment that will pay itself back over time".

Gore's bipartisan group, the Alliance for Climate Protection, estimates the cost of transferring the country to clean electricity sources could cost between $1.5 - $3 trillion over the next thirty years. Gore said in the interview it would cost as much to build the more environmentally hazardous coal plants to address the needs of the current demand.

Gore, who won the Nobel Prize in 2007 for his international work as a crusader for climate change, said "I have never seen an opportunity for the country like the one that's emerging now." Gore also offered praise to both the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, calling both Barack Obama and John McCain "way ahead" of other politicians on the issue.

The Alliance for Climate Change, the bipartisan group Gore chairs, says on its website that in his speech Gore aims to "press the "reset" button on how we think about energy and climate."

That's a crock and you know it. Maybe you should put some money where your mouth is and name a few eminent people who have expertise in Climatology and Meteorology to back up the wild assertion that Gore has been proved right.

I'm glad I can see through the crap and live a happy life. Global warming idiots must be suicidal/depressed or have some other syndrome. At the least the have a lot of hatred of anybody who is enjoying life.

S

I never said "Gore has been proved right." Gore is not a scientist. I don't care what he says and I have never seen his movie.

The "peer reviewed paper" referred to by "debunked" was in fact part of an invited debate in the Society NEWSLETTER. There is an ongoing debate on exactly how sensitive global temperatures will be to CO2 increases, and this newsletter printed 2 invited articles from either side of the issue.

No one has "proved" anything more than we knew last week.

CHAOS: "At the least the have a lot of hatred of anybody who is enjoying life."

Paranoid much?

I'm enjoying life just fine, thank you, and I hope you are too.

Unbelievably stupid comments by some right wing nuts on this site. I just stopped by to see who was on and it just confirms my feeling that the Republican slime machine has dumbed down their own ditto heads. Wake up folks - the argument is over and both candidates have proposed cap and trade - we are going to move forward in spite of you cowardly rednecks.

The IPCC report has been debunked from a variety of sources. They have been proven to has inserted flawed data in their report that didn't even mesh with what the signers of the report believed. If that's what your hanging your hat on (if not Gore's backward computer models) you should either be embarrassed or on somebody's payroll... Hard evidence or reference would be appreciated. Otherwise it's just conjecture.

My brother is a consulting engineer working internationally building coal fired power plants. He reminds me often of how the rest of the world is so discusted with how dumb Americans are and how destructive Bush has been. He was a republican until the dim wits took over his party. I think science illiteracy in this country is so appalling and it is very evident on this site. Ever heard of the Keeling curve? Duh, what is that? Disgusting.

So Al, Since climate change has been happening forever and temperatures have been hotter and colder then today, even without us humans exhaling pollution, you still have not proven that we are causing some increase that is 10 years old and less the a full degree.

And by the Way, what is the correct temperature of the earth?

Mr Gore, exactly what scientific degree do you have?

Posted by: joe | Jul 17, 2008 1:15:41 PM

jock: If you follow Algore at all then you must think that we will all be under water in 10-20 years or so. That's paranoid. You better start building that ark. I believe that my greatgreat great grandchildren will enjoy the same earth as I have. There might be more imorality but the earth will still be the same as it was 500 years ago.

Joe what degree do you have? Another pinhead greedy Republican idiot. Thank god McCain is the candidate so either way we can shelve these idiots like all you illiterates.

Cap and trade: Handing out fines to the US and Europe while not regulating the developing third world. That's progress. Forcing the present developing countries to deindustrialize, while paying for the third world to industrialze with NO envromential, health or labor restrictions, THAT'S progress! Your NOT enviromentalists at all, your communists! Just be up front, please! Allowing countries to bribe each other with "carbon offset" payoffs, does NOTHING for the envroment! It just subsidizes pollution from one set of countries on the backs of another. THAT's "progress." NO, that is communism. And it has or will do NOTHING to stop the actual pollution in the form of things that are actually toxic, instead of carbon dioxide which is necessary for plant GROWTH! Wow, more pollution with decreasing level of food to be replaced with genetically modifed foods, for the developing countries. If THAT is the kind of "compassion" you have for the citizens of the world, let alone the planet. I beg you, I implore you ... to PLEASE keep it to or amongst yourselves. Remember population control begins at home! Get sterilized, euthanize, plant a tree and kill yourself. For it's the self appointed experts who deserve to enjoy our lovely planet, you mere human are a disease that must be culled. No thanks, my rights don't come from you, and NEVER will!

Why doesn't this man move into a house that uses the same amount of electricity as the average homeowner if he is sincere about his crusade. Gore's credo regarding GW: do as I say, not as I do.

Carter laid out a plan to make us energy independent, which was promptly trashed by Reagan. Reagan even had the solar panels removed that had been installed by Carter.

From the responses on this board Republicans still look down on alternative energy... another reason to vote for the Democratic candidate. He includes the alternatives as part of his energy plan, even nuclear, unlike McCain who only wants to encourage energy that rewards big business. Individual citizens should be encouraged to become more energy independent.

Sickening how Gore will now be trying to take credit for so many other people's efforts relating to energy. He's never at the forefront of anything; just a wannabe tagalong. He didn't create the Internet, and his only contribution to global warming is his own hot air.

Posted by: Here He Goes Again | Jul 17, 2008 1:31:05 PM

Hey - don't forget about Gore's greatest accomplishment. He did invent the Internet. Didn't he?

Al Gore said it best: "the debate is over"!!!! I AM AN IDIOT that only gave $247 to charities, while making millions LMAO

Posted by: steve | Jul 17, 2008 1:33:40 PM

Whether or not global warming exists or not is irrelevant.

What is clear is that people have become over-dependant on fossil fuels.

Steps to move towards cleaner energy sources help to decrease that level of dependence. If they help the environment as well, that's a plus.

If global warming is beyond our control, since humans are not actually the major cause of global warming, then oh well, we'll either live or die on how the earth develops.

As an independent voter I couldn't agree with you more. Reading these posts (I'm home recovering), although exceedingly disappointing for a person who loves this country, is convincing me we need to weed out this Republican scourge that is wracking our nation. God help us if Republicans, however slim their chances, were to regain power. Unless they get new leadership they will rightfully be deposited in the asheap of history.

Posted by: Robin | Jul 17, 2008 1:36:47 PM

Robin, rest up. Sounds like you have a lot more recovering to do. Easy on the "Al Gore feel-good pills" too.

Posted by: Here He Goes Again | Jul 17, 2008 1:42:18 PM

Well of course Gore wants or wishes to press the reset button. He screwed up and wants a do-over.

Global warming, global warming, global warming is all we heard. Then they actually do a little research and find out that we are NOT warming, he sings a different tune, climate change. Give me a break.

Funny how the science doesn't support his cause. There is a list of over 31,000 scientists that have signed claiming Gore's science junk.

Gore has always been more like a communist than anything. He found a way to suck in all of his kool-aid drinking sheep to follow him over the cliff. He would love nothing more than to see everything to do with oil taxed so badly that nobody could afford it. Even if it means crashing the country, he doesn't care. He just hates all things oil and has found his little scam.

Now there are plenty of flat-earthers that follow blindly and they have put up cute websites full of the usual talking points. Propaganda for the weak.

Just incase there are any of those flat-earthers in here, I better clarify. I know this earth 'changes', it's what it does all by itself and from sun cycles. We have proof of that. It has happened before and will happen again. It's the manmade part that is far fetched and b.s.
