Hearing-Gate Exposed! McCain Has Worse Afghanistan Hearing Record Than Obama

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports from Capitol Hill: The McCain campaign criticism of Sen. Barack Obama's hearing record on Capitol Hill led us to put the shoe on the other foot.

It turns out that presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain has attended even fewer Afghanistan-related Senate hearings over the past two years than Obama's one. Which is a nice way of saying, McCain, R-Ariz., the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, has attended zero of his committee's six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years.

Meanwhile, Obama attended the full Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan in March 2007, although he used the opportunity to ask Gen. James L. Jones, then the commander of NATO, about Pakistan.

Jones also came before the Senate Armed Services Committee that week. But McCain was a no-show.

The findings are surprising given the fact that the McCain campaign loudly criticized Obama this week for failing to schedule any hearings on Afghanistan in the last year and a half.  Obama chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which has oversight of military operations in Afghanistan.

“As the situation in Afghanistan grows more tense, it is time for us to hold a hearing on the mission there,” Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a McCain surrogate and ranking member of Obama's subcommittee wrote in a letter to the Illinois senator. “The success of Afghanistan is critical to the future of NATO and vital to our efforts to defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban.”

Of the three Afghanistan-related hearings that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has had over the past 22 months, Obama, the presumptive Democratic candidate, has only attended one.

Meanwhile, DeMint, who most recently attacked Obama over Afghanistan, didn't attend any. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, the Democratic chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, missed one of the Afghanistan hearings too -- while he was in the midst of his own presidential campaign.

A review of the Senate Armed Services Committee hearings as listed on the committee Web site for the past two years reveals that McCain's committee has held six hearings that included the word "Afghanistan" in the title or Central Command -- which overseas U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

McCain missed them all.

He missed the hearings with Adm. William Fallon, then the CentCom commander, with authority over Afghanistan, on March 4, 2008, and May 3, 2007.

There was also hearing on June 7, 2007, on the nomination of Gen. Douglas Lute to be the White House war czar with oversight over Afghanistan.

Gen. Jones testified before the Armed Services Committee on Sept. 6, 2007, but that hearing was on Iraq and while McCain showed up late for his opening statement, he was there.

But he missed the hearing on Afghanistan strategy Feb. 14 with representatives from the State Department and Marine Lt. Gen. John Sattler.

He also missed the hearing April, 10, 2008 on the war in Iraq and the "situation in Afghanistan" where Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Michael Mullen both testified.

McCain also missed the Feb. 6, 2008 hearing where the committee considered the fiscal year request for authorizations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But McCain gets a pass for the most egregious Afghanistan-related hearing we could find. In February, 2006 when Republicans were in charge of Congress, Gen. Jones testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and only two senators -- both Republicans -- showed up.

Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., and Richard Lugar, R-Ind., were the only senators who spoke at the hearing. No Biden. No Dodd. No Obama. No DeMint, although to be fair he was not on the committee at that time.

The finger pointing about who attended what hearing when seems besides the point anyways.

Both men have been AWOL from their day jobs for most of the past two years while they are running for president.

Update: McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers, in a statement to ABC News, argued that McCain's years of previous foreign policy experience make up for his recent lack of attendance at hearings.

"The point is that Obama claims to be a leader on Afghanistan, but had the power to hold hearings on our NATO operations there and failed to do so," wrote Rogers in an e-mail, although he did not say why McCain missed his own Armed Services Committee hearings over the past two years.

"John McCain has visited Afghanistan four times, spent 22 years in the military, served for years on the Armed Services Committee, and is a recognized international leader on national security policy," he said. "Obama has never visited Afghanistan once before this week and has no other foreign policy or national security experience to speak of. It isn’t even close."

Obama was supposed to be chairing a committee on Afghanistan.

He never held a hearing.

McCain from 2001 till he was running for President attended dozens of hearings on Afghanistan.

Obama wasn't even in the senate then.

Way to expose how liberal you are Jake Tapper.

McCain has gone to nato security conferences every year on afghanistan to talk about the nato relationship with Afghanistan.

Obama has never gone to those conferences Jake Tapper.

Obama has only been to western europe once on a stopover.

This is what happens when the MSM is dominated by east coast liberals who went to liberal schools.

This is what happens when 85 percent of the media are registered as democrats.

The coverage of this election is like we are in Russia.

You don't mention how Biden went after Obama for never mentioning Afghanistan at any hearing. MSNBC is reporting this.

The big difference is McCain has a record.

McCain went to Nato security conferences every year to talk about the relationship with afghanistan.

McCain attended numerous hearings about afghanistan after 9/11 when Obama was in the senate.

The key is Obama has no experience and didn't use the oppurtunity to hold a hearing or ask a question about afgnistan in the hearings.

Obama has been to western europe once on a stopover. He never went to nato security conference annually like McCain.

McCain has visited Pakistan many times.

McCain has visited the tribal areas of Pakistan.

McCain knows the leaders of pakistan.

McCain knows the leaders of Afgnanistan.

Obama has never been to Afgnaistan.

Obama talks how weak Karzai is without ever going there.

Jake Tapper please look at the full record as hard as it is to do because it goes against your political leanings.

As usual, scratch a republican find a hypocrite. Why are republicans always guilty of the same sins they renounce? Hypocrites.

McCain lacked judgement and everything he says is a lie. This old man is a big joke. He lies about his veteran records, he lies about voting to desinate iran revolution guard as terrorist, he lies about supportings women pay increase. He lies about everything.

Another example of McCain being a 1/4 deep and a mile wide---no depth whatsoever, only attack, attack. Its already become boring. Pelosi say Bush has no new ideas; McCain-Bush same o, same o. Yawn!!!

Can someone name me 1 war that John Mcain directed or was in charge of?? He was in the Sissy Navy and was a POW for 5 years so what?? How does that make you a great president?? Explain it to me like i am a 5 year old...

No birth control for you if John mcain is president. Hey anyone google John Mcains military record. Its been sealed and even some republicans have been saying there is evidence he did collaborate with the enemy. Whats to hide?? Release his records.

McCain's campaign chose to make hearing attendance a proxy for foreign policy experience, not the media. It's a bit disingenuous to whine about bias when the media is just using the benchmark McCain coined to measure McCain himself. After the full support and cover the media gave President Bush in selling the Iraq war, I thought claims of a liberal media were dead and buried. Guess much like McCain selling Bush's economic policy as a great idea for growth, there is a certain audience who ignores facts and reality in favor of a cherished (if absurd) talking point.

McCain also has the worst voting record in the Senate. The last time McCain cast a Senate vote was on April 8. I guess he is too old and tired to travel back and forth to DC.

dan p- This election can be won without pandering to Republican muck racking tactics. McCain should be judged on his stated policy and proven record, not whether he "collaborated" under horrific torture suffered while a prisoner of war. Leave the Swift Boating to the Republicans, Obama - and America - has nothing to gain from allowing McCain to shift focus from the important policy differences (I'm not talking the vapid soundbite wars, I'm referring to the detailed and specific policy laid out on Obama's website).

Let's be real on attendance at these hearings. What do you think these wealthy senators (paid by your tax dollar) have as a staff representing the senators at various meetings. Attendance is not the issue, it's what they believe and support. OOPs, I meant to say what they profess (don't have to believe, just say what will get votes) and present what the issue of the day is (will change several times).

Michael Please do your research. Sen Biden the Foreign Relations Committee chairman, held those meetings. Sen Obama's sub committee overseas NATO.

Sen. Biden said "On the particular issue of NATO’s mission in Afghanistan, we have held three full committee hearings in the last 22 months... At all three of these hearings, we were fortunate enough to have the expert testimony ... of former NATO commander and Supreme Allied Commander-Europe, Gen. James R. Jones (USMC, ret.). At my request, Sen. Obama chaired the confirmation hearing for our next ambassador to NATO, which he focused on NATO’s mission in Afghanistan."

Oh I didnt know that Bush will be meeting personally with Ahmadinijad?Normally, I wouldnt stand up for a man that i dont think was qualified to be president. But in this case, Bush isnt meeting them. Obama in three debates pretty directly answered he would personally meet with conditions. I think Bush is really stealing from hillary since she would do what Bush appears to be doing..i dont know who i am going to vote for since I need some experince with all the crap that is coming..I may not agree with some McCain ideals but i know that he loves this country and has shown it! Country before party!

Bush and McCain ignored Afghanistan all the while Obama was arguing for more troops and resources. The clueless warmongers Bush/McCain kept insisting on focusing on Iraq which, of course, had nothing to do with the attacks on 9/11. Now they have changed their tune as violence has peaked in Afghanistan and are now admitting Obama was right all along.

Posted by: HonestAbe | Jul 17, 2008 7:36:21 PM

linchristi - Are you saying Sen McCain loves his country because he was a POW? That is preparation for office, how? While he did serve his country, that is not a pre curser to being a good POTUS! You need to know when to be diplomatic. Have not learned from the shoot first get correct intelligence later that in not the way to go? It's obvious that your HRC supporter. Bush is not stealing from her, he's stealing from Sen Obama. If you remember they tried skewering him about meeting with out conditions.

Posted by: try the truth | Jul 17, 2008 7:37:35 PM

McCain is all over the place on his new and revised Afghanistan policy. First McCain countered Obama's original proposal to put 2 more brigades in Afghanistan by saying he'll put 3 more and that those brigades would be coming from Iraq. Then realizing there aren't 3 brigades available from Iraq, McCain said they would come from NATO, but then later a spokesman said McCain thinks it could be a mixture of U.S. and NATO troops. So what is McCain's plan now?? What a confused lunatic McCain has become. I cannot imagine anyone voting for this guy.

Posted by: HonestAbe | Jul 17, 2008 7:39:01 PM

Who needs a stinkin' committee? McCain gets his own "facts." He goes to Baghdad, is surrounded by hundreds of our soldiers and protected by BlackHawk helicopters overhead, and then comes away from that experience saying, "everything is GREAT. everything is NORMAL."

Posted by: American Patriot | Jul 17, 2008 7:53:12 PM

Jeff, right. You must be joking. The NATO conference? That's called an excuse to fly Cindy's plane to Europe for a week. Really. How pathetic a defense.
