ABC News' Tahman Bradley, Teddy Davis and Ayana Harry report: Virginia Governor Tim Kaine downplayed speculation Tuesday that he is on Sen. Barack Obama's list of potential vice-presidential candidates.

"I haven't sought  it, I'm not running for it, I'm not asking for it," Kaine told a crowd of reporters in Washington, DC who waited for him to finish an interview with WTOP radio.

Rumors about whether Obama will choose the Virginia governor as his running mate swelled Tuesday after the Washington Post reported Kaine told unspecified "close associates" that he has had "very serious" conversations with Obama about joining him on the 2008 Democratic ticket. He has also provided documents to the campaign as they check his background, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

ABC's Jan Crawford Greenburg has also put Kaine on Obama's "very short list."

After his interview with WTOP, Kaine was greeted by a swarm of reporters asking whether he told friends that he's talking with Obama about being a vice-presidential candidate.

"My conversations with the campaign stay with the campaign," Kaine said, adding that he did not meet with Obama today and is not planning to do so. Obama is in Washington DC Tuesday for meetings.

However Kaine joked that news reports that he is on Obama's list of candidates are making his mother happy.

"My mom loves seeing me on the lists, that's fun for her," he said.

Reporters have begun to track the movement of potential vice-presidential picks carefully.

During Kaine's interview with WTOP Radio in Washington, D.C., he indicated that he has a private event planned with his daughter later Tuesday.

A Kaine aide tells ABC News that the Obama vice-presidential prospect is headed to Chincoteague Island, Va., on Tuesday in order to be there for Wednesday's annual Chincoteague Pony Swim with daughter Annella.

The pony swim is expected to take place on Wednesday between 7:00 am - 9:00 am ET.

With Kaine slated to spend the rest of Tuesday and most of Wednesday on the island, speculation is swirling as to whether he will be engaged in any VP-related talks or briefings.

On Thursday, Kaine is scheduled to be back in Richmond for a 9:00 am ET radio interview with WRVA in Richmond, Va.

I do not know anything about this man. So I am glad that he does not want the ticket. I hope that Obama will long and hard and bring in someone who can help us out of this mess.

If you knew anything about the Electoral College, you would not be calling this one nearly so early.

This is an unlosable election for any Democratic nominee, not to mention one this politically adept.

Where there's smoke, there's fire, and Kaine has exploded as of late. He's obviously the choice save for a final oops or if this is all just an elaborate hoax from the Obama camp.

Did he say he didnt want it? Absolutely not. For all of you amateurs it is a common practice for veep candidates not to say they are interested since it may sound presumptuous. Did you learn something new today?

Obama is winning. judgment over experience any day. Y`all get over it

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel...it's 2008, and no matter how hard you close your eyes and pray that this doesn't happen, it's GOING to happen. The world as you know it has passed. Now my recommendation is that you embrace it or just kill yourself. Either way, I doubt anyone would care!!

I was born and raised in Virginia. You guys can have him. It will be another political goof by the little "o".

Posted by: tigger | Jul 29, 2008 1:05:54 PM

Just a coincidence that he has the same sounding name as the GOP candidate - Senator John McCain! Indecisive Obama brings out a new VP name weeks short of the convention but I doubt he will announce his choice until the convention. This is just another diversionary tactic by the DNC for their candidate to avoid discussion of the issues and solutions. Hillary met all his stated pre-reqs for the job, but seems no interest in her except for her to continue her campaign efforts for him.

Kinda the whole point behind anti-terrorism.

Guys with the name Hussien.. bad idea, America, :)

All you Barack bashers, admit it, its over. You refer to the USA/gallup poll. That is only likely voters which means they disregarded all first time voters and young people. They will be mostly voting for Obama. Look at the Gallup Daily poll, Obama is up 48 - 40. If kaine is picked as the VP, Virginia will vote Democrat. Look at the individual states, Obama will be your new president.

Obama has proven time and again his ability to put together a formidable team. At the appropriate time Obama will name his second in command.

Yes Obama is know for his good judgment. This is why I will chose Obama`s judgment over McCain`s experience any day.

Billw: Please, lets name the people the Republicans (MCCain) are associated with... Get over it, this is old news we all have moved on.

Posted by: becky | Jul 29, 2008 1:13:59 PM

Really Ame??? And exactly when else did Obama put together a formiable team? Hmmmm? Was it when he and his puppet master Rezko got together to scam taxpayers, freeze poor blacks in their government housing scam that netted Obama help in buying his mansion.

What McCain needs to do is cross over and ask Hillary to be his V.P...This would seal the deal for McCain.....

"Please, lets name the people the Republicans (MCCain) are associated with... Get over it, this is old news we all have moved on."

Old news is a persons reputation. But it looks like that's best forgotten by Obama supporters...

It will be difficult to find someone worthy of standing in the great one's shadow.
