Kansas Governor Sidesteps Veep Speculation

ABC News' Kate McCarthy Reports: Despite ongoing speculation that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is on Obama's VP shortlist, the Democratic governor of Kansas sidestepped questions today about her name appearing on the Democratic ticket this fall.

"All the information on the vice presidential process is really being answered by the campaign," Sebelius told ABC affiliate KMBC in Overland Park, KS. "All the surrogates have been asked to (refer questions to the campaign) for months and it’s what I’m complying with."

The presumptive democratic nominee will visit neighboring Missouri tomorrow. Sebelius, a two term governor from a traditionally republican state, acknowledged that Obama still has some work to do with small town working class voters.

"I think they need to get to know him better. And I think that is one of the reasons he's making a trip to rural Missouri and he’ll be making trips all over America to smaller town and smaller venues," she said.

Sebelius pointed out that Obama has family from rural America.

"I think the more familiar people are with his Kansas roots and his background in El Dorado….the more they’ll get to know him," Sebelius said.

Obama has that “new boyfriend” syndrome. Lots of excitement and he looked damn near perfect in those early days. You know, when you get to project on him all those traits you’re looking for beyond cute and smart - character, depth, humor, a moral center.

As time goes on, he’s no longer the shiny new thing. He disses your best friend (behind her back of course), you begin to see his smarminess when he sucks up to your boss and he just doesn’t fit in or get your family’s zany, noisy humor - and he’s stopped trying. The ultimate deal breaker - you learn that he’ll do or say anything to get what he wants.

You know the type - you’ve dated him or perhaps it’s your daughter or a good friend. He just never lived up to the promise of those first, early days. Best to heed the advice you’ve given or gotten - Lose him quick and move on.

Hey s. valenti, have trouble staying on topic? The question here is, what do you think of Sebelius? I think People magazine is asking readers who they'd rather date -- quick, log in there, you might miss it.

Personally, I like Sebelius a lot. Saw her a couple of times on c-span. Very smart, very poised. Wish I'd seen her "democratic response". They say she flubbed it. Temperament-wise she seems a really good fit for Obama and the kind of presidency you imagine he'll run -- thoughtful, reflective, respectful, pragmatic. He could do a lot worse than Sebelius.

Yeap he has lots of kansas roots, especially those bitter religous folks clinging to guns like his typical white granny right? At this point Obama can pick who he wants to, he either has the guts to pick someone who would be just as good as him, or he goes with his ego and tries to prove a point. I use to be so excited about this election at the begining and at the begining of the election I actually liked Barack. I heard him talk in person when he was campaining for our wisconsin gov. Once the primaries began I relazied I had been hoodwinked and bamboozled, one of the oldest lies in the book I am not a typical politican and its time to change washington. I am very blaah bout the choices for president and don't feel either one will make a real difference.

She wants to get to know him? Obama is what you see a marketing Package.

Kennedy is picking the running mate. So many they want to know Kate.

Maybe they need someone who actually knows what is going on in government and the world for a running mate for obama. So He has someone close to keep him informed of things and a fresh script when needed.

I believe that Kathleen and McCaskill should take a long vacation together on a ferry boat and forget their way back. Neither one of them are qualified to become Obama's VP. In fact he shouldn't pick a governor for his VP. They only govern their state. He should pick a senator. And Caroline Kennedy should stay home with her family. She doesn't know the first thing about politics. Obama should have the intelligence to pick his own VP like McCain. McCain doesn't need help.

Sbelius would make a solid VP choice and will certainly be involved in the campaign, but it won;t be as Obama's running mate. Choosing another woman over Hillary would apparently tick off HRC's fan base and Sibelius lacks the big-time experience and gravitas that Obama needs. Then again Kaine lacks that as well...

Joe Biden, anyone?

I wish he would pick this woman. It would definitely motivate the evangelical pro life base because she's the governor of the state where Tiller the Baby Killer lives and she hasn't cooperated with authorities at all in getting him to shut down his infanticide clinic.

O'Reilly's producers confronted her recently about it and she was a disgrace.

Pick her! Pick her! Lol.

Well they both were at Bilderburg in Chantilly, Va. So I woudn't be surprised.

Whether it's right or wrong, whether it drives people crazy or no, I think Obama stands to lose a whole heap of voters if he chooses a woman and it's not HRC. Forget the glass ceiling and all its 18 million cracks -- in many ways, HRC earned it, and she deserves it. For him to turn his back on her ... well, he does so at his peril.

And to the poster who talked about Obama being the new boyfriend -- spot on! I read a quote quite a long time ago, (it may have been Bill Clinton's) along the lines of that Democrats tend to fall in love, and then can't understand while the relatives can't stand the fiance.

Seems no one is too excited about being O'bambi's VP. Telling. Very telling.

There's a downside to picking Hillary as VP. But the upside is that she galvanizes half of the Democratic base -- the very half that may have some misgivings about Obama. If you want a Dem merger that galvanizes 35 million Dems than you have to pick Hillary, despite conventional wisdom and all the
Bidens, Kaines, Sebelius' submitting their papers to the vetters.

I think he will have a hard time picking someone who does not out-shine him with intelligence, integrity and experience if they have had experience as an elected governor or senator. Senator Obama's ego will not allow for that.

So what exactly is puma threatening to do at the convention. *yawn*

Posted by: d | Jul 29, 2008 10:49:29 PM

Perhaps John Edwards will take the position. He would be the perfect VP pick. He'd fit right in the the rest of the cheating insiders of the DNC. Dean, Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy, Brazile and the biggest cheater of all O'Bambi! Just ask Edward's poor wife if John wouldn't fit right in with the cheaters.

@alvin--Obama's judgment is always supreme
----------------------------------------Obama's judgment is Tony Rezko, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Trinty hate- mongering, racist church, Humas, etc. Those are just great judgment calls for 15 to 20 years. Not to mention the flip-flops on nearly every issue. WHAT JUDGMENT???????

Posted by: Mary | Jul 30, 2008 3:03:53 AM

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and a PUMA are standing at a bus stop. Clinton asks Obama, "Do you have the time?" Obama checks his watch and replies, "It's quarter to eight." The PUMA turns to Obama and says, "See! You're patronizing to Hillary Clinton, demeaning and insulting to women, and playing the race card! I'm voting for John McCain!"
