McCain at the Sausage Haus
July 24, 2008 12:10 PM
ABC News' David Wright Reports: Today as his rival prepares to deliver a major address to the throngs in Germany, John McCain counter-programmed with a more modest event bound to invite comparisons.
Obama was at the Tiergarten in Berlin, amid a sea of people. McCain was at "Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant" in German Village, an enclave of Columbus, Ohio.
McCain addressed about a half dozen Ohio small business owners in the historic village.
"I'd love to give a speech in Germany," McCain said. "But I'd much prefer to do it as President."
WATCH VIDEO OF MCCAIN AT THE SAUSAGE HAUS HERE.
In front of the restaurant stands a cardboard cutout of a Bavarian man in lederhosen and Bavarian woman in a dirndl. The faces are cutout, so tourists can pop in their heads for photos.
It's unlikely McCain would stop for a souvenir snapshot, but he did shake hands with the crowd of lunchtime diners who seem excited to see him. He also sampled the Haus' sausage and made a special point of ordering some chocolate cream puffs, a traditional German dessert, to go.
"We love him," said Columbus resident Diane Woods.
"I don't know why Obama's getting all this attention. McCain is right where he should be -- in America," she said.
"He graduated from the Naval Academy a year after my uncle did," said Roger Clark, who did not expect McCain's visit.
This event was hastily organized after the candidate's planned visit to a Louisiana was cancelled due to the threat of hurricanes in the Gulf Coast.

He should have had his picture in front of the cakes. Isn't that what he is telling us all to eat after we lose our jobs and homes???

From Fox News/Opinion Dynamics:
Who do you think will win in November?
Obama: 51%
McCain: 27%
Depends/unsure: 22%
Obama’s favorability rating remains at

John McCain could never inspire that many people around the world.
This guy is an artifact… too old to be president.

he would love to give a speach?
He better ask - do we want to listen any from him.
He has nothing to say, except broken old memory.
McBush, we do NOT need Your speach! Shut Up,

This is so sad. Obama draws 200K for his appearance and is televised all over the world; McCain visits a sauage cafe where he competes over lunch for the attention of six diners.

Obama is in Germany in front of hundreds of thousands of people and McCain is in a SAUSAGE house.
This is getting to the point of becoming comical.
Obama is going to slaughter this guy !!!!

Maybe McCain should have arranged for a popular singer to give a free concert at the sausage haus prior to his arrival - that trick seems to work very well for Obama.

It seems very odd to me that McCain went on and on about Obama not going to Iraq and seeing things for himself, and now that he is there, McCain is running all over America saying," Look I am here with you guys instead of trapsing all over Eurpoe." He is a total putz....

Wow he was speaking to 6 people? I didnt think that many would turn up.

McCain is running an awful campaign, they are completely on the defensive. React, react, react, that's all they do, they let Obama dictate the tone of the race. Obama speaks in front of 200,000 adoring fans in Germany, why in God's name would his campaign draw attention to that fact by going to a German-American sausage haus. And the attacks, especially attacks when Obama is overseas, just seem heavy-handed. Attacks didn't work for Hillary. Didn't they watch and learn from that campaign? They have no excuse, their primary battle ended months before theirs. It was covered on the news non-stop, you couldn't avoid watching it if you wanted to. How could they have learned nothing from that? If his campaign staff is going to be his White House staff, you can't abide this guy, they are all incompetent. Look at the execution of Obama's entire trip, it has been flawless. McCain's people make horrendous decision after horrendous decision. That is what the President's most important job is, to make decisions and McCain and his people have gone a couple of weeks without making a single correct one. How is this guy polling so high, he's only 6 points down? They are absolutely incompetent.

Really folks, this whole GOP vs. Democrat thing is now OFFICIALLY a thing of the past... right? The GOP are not EVEN in the race at this point... What a TRUE DISPLAY of exactly how ineffectual this party has become. You know what? It just occurred to me that GWB and Cheney and all those hundreds who now support them are in fact LARGELY responsible for the demise of the GOP we have today... I guess this last 7 years have not been an entire catastrophe after all! Thanks... I guess.

Why is obama getting credit for going over seas? We are having problems in america! Mcain has the intelligence and experience to help our our country. It almost seems Obama is unpatriotic.

How many germans will be voting for obama in germany, OH WAIT someone forgot to tell Obama that the Germans can't vote in our election. Just another bonehead mistake.
Posted by: billy bob | Jul 24, 2008 3:54:31 PM
McCain is irrelevant. There's no chance a Republican is going to win in November. That much is plainly clear. And McCain, who the Republicans said wasn't nearly as good a candidate in 2000 as Bush was (cough, cough), has absolutely no chance in November. I mean, if McCain wasn't good enough to run against Bush in 2000, then how is he going to be relevant now especially after the dismal failure that Bush has left behind?
Posted by: Eric Hermanson | Jul 24, 2008 3:54:33 PM
If McCain is so experienced, why is he running such a LAME campaign? Whose idea was it to send McCain to a German Village “Sausage Haus” on the day Obama speaks in Berlin? You’re fired.
Posted by: Center One | Jul 24, 2008 3:55:48 PM
And these one-half dozen will vote. Is Obama confused into thinking the Germans at his thing can vote in November? Perhaps Joe Biden, his foreign policy adviser, ought to educate Obama on this very important matter. He may even try to take this to the Supreme Court when he loses. One media called this Obamapalooza. Strange is what it is.
