McCain Campaign Mocks Media's Relationship With Obama

July 22, 2008 11:49 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: With Sen. Barack Obama receiving wide coverage for his foreign trip, Sen. John McCain’s campaign is dialing up its criticism of the news media, with a Web video and an online contest mocking the mainstream press for what the campaign describes as Obama-tilted coverage.

The Web video splices together clips of several journalists -- notably MSNBC's Chris Matthews -- offering glowing praise of Obama on the air. It also features Clinton supporters Terry McAuliffe and Gov. Ed Rendell, D-Pa., in clips where they say members of the mainstream media are enamored with Obama, D-Ill.

"I felt this thrill going up my leg," Matthews says in one clip. "He's sort of a gift from the world to us in so many ways," he says in another.

Those clips -- and most of those used in the video -- come not from the general election, but from Obama's Democratic primary battle with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.

The online contest jokingly invites users to vote for their favorite love song to serve as a soundtrack for the media’s “devotion” to Obama.

The critique of the news media is particularly striking coming from McCain, R-Ariz., who has long enjoyed a cozy relationship with journalists. In 2000 and 2008, his Republican rivals accused members of the media of being too close to McCain, and McCain once jokingly referred to the political press corps as "my base."

But the McCain campaign has grown frustrated with media coverage in the general election, particularly during his foreign trip. All three network evening news anchors are scheduled to interview Obama while he's abroad; some observers have noted that none of them made the trip with McCain when he visited Iraq in March.

In addition, the McCain campaign on Monday expressed anger with The New York Times for rejecting an op-ed submission from the senator, a week after the newspaper published an opinion piece authored by Obama.

With the Republicans in "Every Man for Himself" mode combined with McCain's envy of POTUS Obama at work, he is limited to the incessant WHINE.

Both the Republican party and McCain knew he was out of his league when they chose him as their nominee. Combine that with arrogant thinking in assuming their old played out tactics would work and WHALAH! The rats are scurrying!

I NOMINATE HIM "WHINER IN CHIEF".

"McCain once jokingly referred to the political press corps as “my base.”

And today he's whining, sounds like a couple in the middle of a break up, doesn't it? Nothing sadder than an old man dumped by his sweetheart.

McCain is really starting to act like a whinny loser.

The media's obsession with Obama is nauseating. McCain deserves some respect and no matter what he does, the media falls deeper in love w/BHO. It truly turns my stomach to see the no-longer-veiled bias for Obama. It's also frightening because they are acting worse than they did with Bush--and not questioning a single thing even when things are fishy. No candidate deserves this much adoration. No one. Certainly not a junior senator with precious little experience. He's just a celebrity. A celebrity with no substance.

Posted by: rhian | Jul 22, 2008 12:21:24 PM

Obama would be nothing without the media.

He has them bought and paid for.

He has to utilize the media to keep his reinforcements of his mind conditioning working to the limit.

If Obama loses media appeal he will sink like a concrete block in the river.

The media and Obama's over inflated ego is what keeps him a float.

Posted by: seah | Jul 22, 2008 12:24:39 PM

McCain's jst put off that he's being replaced as the media darling for the moment.

Kinda how the first wife feels after being replaced by the trophy wife, I guess.

Anyway, he's starting to sound kinda bitter.

The NYT rejected McLame's opt-ed
for precisely the reasons they clearly stated. McBush does not spell out what his foreign policy strategy for Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan.Secondly he does not clarify any of his positions on energy, education, healthcare or infrastructre renewal. Lastly it is a bit unseemly that an Old warrior can only whine like a baby that the media isn't giving McCan't the same coverage. I say the MSM has given a free ride of sorts, with all the gaffes and missteps of McSame & his campaign. I can only hope that McBush gets his wish and gets more coverage and scrutiny. i.e. McBush stated Monday about the serious problems on the border between Iraq and Pakistani border. Unfortunately there is no such border, just like there is no Czechoslavakia. Just imagine what the media hoopla would be if Obama had made any of these gaffs, the media would have labeled him as inexpierienced, naive and not CinC material. Talk about a double standard. I hope the media will start doing it's job and stop Giving McWhiner a free pass , give McWhiner the coverage & Scrutiny he really deserves!
An expert in foreign policy is MacCain not!

Maybe Mccain should be asking why the republican party leaders (some of whom own the independent cable operating stations acroos the state) dropped MCNBC from their basic cable line up this past week.

isn't that interesting...they are leading with FOX NEWS across this battleground state...

Posted by: dl | Jul 22, 2008 12:34:01 PM

someone needs to start asking questions ...the heads of the state republican party in NH own the local state wide cable services...

they just removed MSNBC from the basic cable line up.

This is the same state where the state RNC jammed the phone banks of the dems when they voted Bush.

JJ says - "Obama will pull this nation out of its ignorance and bigotry into a bright new day and a bright new way for freedom!" Get off the Kool-aid and open your eyes. Obama is a dirty Chicago politician - full of hot air and not much else. He has been in senate for about 140 days - no experince, no integrity - he is selling you dreams - he will take this country down.

We all want to be lucky but sometimes it doesn't happen so.

Bad news coming everyday to Sen. McCain. To make the matter even worse, the major ally (UK), is pulling out of Iraq in 6 months to come. Today Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made this announcement.

Sorry Sen. McCain it looks like the luck is not on your side!

Posted by: Peace | Jul 22, 2008 12:56:24 PM

Gloria Borger of CNN wrote a piece basically stating that Sen. Obama has to be careful of too much European support. Arianna Huffington asked…“What do Borger and the McCain campaign think would play better in Missouri, Obama getting off the plane in Germany and having the locals throw tomatoes at him? Would that endear him to the people in Middle America -- who, in McCain's World, are like an insecure girlfriend, panicked by just the thought of someone else finding their guy attractive? Sadly, this absurd line of thinking is spreading fast. Thankfully, most Americans understand that having a president who is lauded around the world is infinitely better than having one who is loathed." ___ I’m going to introduce a new phrase and I hope it catches on. “McCain is guilty of rock-star envy!”

I read McCain's essay on the druge report,NYT was right to reject it. All McCain said was what he has been saying verbally ,the surge worked Obama was wrong, and about winning. He said nothing about what defines a win or getting out of Iraq, that is because he plans to never leave, like he has said so many times about Korea

By David Gergan ...

“…Barack Obama made the first mistake of his trip, in my judgment, in releasing a statement in which he said exactly what Maliki had said in those conversations. We have a long tradition in this country that we only have one president at a time. He’s the commander in chief and the negotiator in chief. I cannot remember a campaign which a rival seeking the presidency has been in a position negotiating a war that’s under way with another party outside the country.”

(Is there no end to his ego?)

Posted by: Aston | Jul 22, 2008 1:11:40 PM

Even with all the positive press coverage, his "rock star" appeal and the tens of thousands that show up at his staged events, Obama is only leading in the polls by somewhere between 1 and 4 points (depending on the poll). That's not the kind of lead that an "inevitable" candidate should have at this time.

Posted by: Joe Friday | Jul 22, 2008 1:13:39 PM

Obama is the most egotistical, arrogant candidate since GWB.

As far as the media, NBC, CBS and ABC should be ashamed of themselves for so blantantly exposing themselves as they really are; and they all have the nerve to say Fox News is biased?? Incredible.

Obama is a flash in the pan; no substance, no experience. What a loser!

I quit watching NBC, CBS and ABC, they no longer represent the American people.

i am happy this is happening, because FINALLY they would start covering mccain so that america can finally see all the GAFFES, FLIP-FLOPPING and his TRUE position on the economy and women's rights.

it will BACKFIRE like the call for Obama to travel.

Posted by: johnosahon | Jul 22, 2008 1:28:27 PM

I do wish the media would give McCain the attention he wants so that everyone could see just how out of touch the man is with reality. If more people would hear the ridiculous things this man sometimes says, they would laugh him off the convention stage.

Posted by: hang | Jul 22, 2008 1:28:57 PM

Be careful Nat-- your messiah still would not support the surge- that was military action, lets keep it political, if you don't mind.

Posted by: Robert in Cleveland | Jul 22, 2008 1:38:09 PM

Obama and the press have become such a joke. No one in my office will take anything he says for real - how can we tell what is real or simply what the press wants us to see? Are we still in America? Seems like Chavez just pulled something like this not too long ago.....only show the citizens what he wants them to see......

Posted by: Robert in Cleveland | Jul 22, 2008 1:39:48 PM

mcain doesnt need any media coverage he is just the same thing we have heard for the last 7 years so why would they want to listen to old ideas that have failed for decades every republican thinks that if you give to the rich they will create jobs... wrong!!!!!!! they will only be richer ... give to the working class and the poor and they will spned it on products the rich make there by making all classes better off. but you just cant get that thru the stupid skulls of racist hate and fear and war mongering republicans.

Posted by: tom | Jul 22, 2008 1:41:56 PM

McCain has a sense of humor...and can make fun of the media and their obsession. When they were more favorable to him in the past..he jokingly referred to them as "his base".
Obama doesn't have a sense of humor. He iis too full of himself.

Re: Iraq...Maliki and Chalabi are using Obama for their own purposes. They don't seem to have the best interest of their country at heart.

In the unfortunate event that Obama becomes President...the troops will come out...and despite what Obama says about putting them back if the situation deteriorates...they will never go back under his administration.

Posted by: Kathy Corey | Jul 22, 2008 1:42:21 PM

Posted by: Robert in Cleveland | Jul 22, 2008 1:42:47 PM

But Israel is a strong friend of Israel. Give me break-- this novice wants to be POTUS? Maybe Pres. of the United Social workers.

Posted by: Robert in Cleveland | Jul 22, 2008 1:46:19 PM

I disagree. I challenge ABC and all other media outlets to give McCain 24/7 coverage.

McCain's gaffe's and flip-flops are being largely ignored.

For example, last week in a visit to the GM Tech Center here in Detroit, McCain advocated state regulated car emissions (a virtual death knell to Detroit automakers) after being for Federally regulated emission standards.

The Detroit newspapers are all over this flip-flop, quoting one auto exec as saying "Michigan should be a competitive state for him, but it almost feels like he's doing what he can to lose it".

Combine that with the fact that McCain comes to Michigan to promote NAFTA and CAFTA, and it makes you wonder, who is writing McCain's message?

So cover McCain all you can, the results will be truly telling!

Mr. McCain, if you want more coverage here's how you do it; DO SOMETHING INTERESTING! STOP BEING SO BORING!

Don't blame the media for covering something exciting. They are covering what people want to know and hear about. You continue to represent the past when the world is hungry for something different. Stop your complaining and do something interesting.

How cares if Obama was against the surge? It's the WAR that people want to see stopped. Again, you have nothing to say; now you want the media to cover you saying nothing.

Face it, no one wants to hear from you...

Another Dem: "Everyone sees Obama for what he is."

I've never figured out why the internet makes people say such stupid things. No, not everyone shares your view of Obama, no matter how many times you repeat it nor how many exclamation marks you type. And this stupidity, of course, isn't limited to McCain supporters.

I'm guessing the state by state polling is a little more accurate than some of the sweeping statements we see here. No, Obama doesn't have just 12 supporters. No, not everyone agrees that McCain is showing signs of dementia, and/or flat-out ignorance.

Make your cases, but try to at least be a little accurate in the generationalizations.
