McCain: Social Security Tax Hike ‘On the Table’

ABC News' Anamarie Rebori reports: Sen. John McCain made clear this weekend that when it comes to fixing Social Security, "everything is on the table," including a possible payroll tax increase.

"There is nothing I would take off the table. There was nothing I would demand," McCain told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview on "This Week." "I think that’s the way that Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill did it -- and that's what we have to do again."

When asked if that includes a possible hike in the payroll tax, McCain reiterated that nothing -- including such a tax hike -- is "off the table."

"I don't want tax increases. Of course, I'd like to have young Americans have some of their money put into an account with their name on it," McCain said.

However, in a February interview with Stephanopoulos, which also aired on "This Week," McCain made a pledge not to raise taxes as president. When Stephanopoulos asked, "Are you a 'read my lips' candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?" McCain responded affirmatively: "No new taxes."

This sounds like the dreaded Obama flip-flops he criticizes so much. "Nothing is off the table"? We know what that means...

This is getting scary from Mr McCain. This man is desperate

He's getting so fullo'crap

it's ridiculous.

If anyone saw hom speak last fall they would know he only is well adept at one subject and the rest is all soundbite fluff.

and the funny thing is people (who have not seen either candidate in person are the ones saying Obama is...oy)

MKccain answers questions adeptly on cold war military tactics...outside of that he stumbles on every subject.

siplomacy economic, healthcare, education

even taxes...

He is finae as long as he keeps saying I won't raise your taxes...

whichisn't true and everyone knows it.

the rest is usually
1 question... soundbite or I don't remember

follow up question...change the subject or belittle the issue...or say "Obama will raise your taxes"...and the word "surge"
oy

Give his campaign ten minutes and they will put out a statement that reverses the reversal.

John "Social Security is a Disgrace" McCain will be BLASTED this week for his privitization of social security proposal.

It's time that Obama BLASTS McCain for his crappy economic plan.

Didn't McCain say "Social Security is a Disgrace"?

Posted by: Tamrya | Jul 27, 2008 10:27:54 AM

Mcain is a disgrace

Maybe McCain's jabber about Social Security will upset the base of seniors he draws to his town hall meetings and other unenthusiastic members of this social class.

Saying "everything is on the table" is the same as not answering the question. There is a whole raft of boomers contemplating early retirement. If you raise the tax, the decision will be made and they will start drawing SS benefits in large numbers. Without the increase, they might work a few years longer.

McCain said that we need offshore drilling, but he tells Stephanopoulis that as President he will stop offshore drilling. This is on the same show, I don't think Stephanopoulis was asking strong questions to McCain.

McCain also mention that we have energy problem for 30 years and congress has not done anything about. He was in the senate for three decades, what have he done to solve that problem?

The media need to ask questions that the public want to hear and not the questions that makes McCain look smart!

what are you guys talking about?! at least he's honest enough to say "everything would be on the table"!!!! cmon now. would you rather have hime flat out lie and say "we wont do this or that" and then do that when he gets in?! first off, that wouldnt be a "new" tax... just an increased tax seeing that we already have it. why do you think nothing has been done about the social security problem? BECAUSE ITS POLITICAL SUICIDE. whatever the answer will be, its not going to be good for all americans because that is a BIG chunk of money that has to come from somewhere. at least he's honest enough to say all options will be on the table. we cant have it all without sacrifice people.

tamrya...

i just have a question for you out of curiosity. and first off let me say, im not an expert on this but its just a general question. given the enormous problem in social security, why would you take privatezation or partial privatezation off the table?

Posted by: Tim | Jul 27, 2008 11:39:42 AM

It seems kind of obvious to me: his short term memory is failing. He can't remember what he said just a short time ago so he changes his answer depending on how the question is asked.

McCain got himself into hot water by previously pledging "No new taxes". He looks foolish now, but his big mistake was then. The Republicans, his party, have so completely wrecked the economy that making this pledge was a fecklessly mindless.

McCain is a real flip-flopper's flip-flopper.

Did I mention he's a flip-flopper? It's got to be embarrassing for him and his supporters to display such hypocrisy, and so brazenly, to boot.

Payroll taxes slam low-income workers harder than any others. You must be very proud of your limp-spined candidate.

Enjoy.

McSame saying that payroll tax increases are on the table as a fix for Social Security. Either (1) he is a bald faced liar (which is what I think) or (b) he is willing to get his nuts roasted by conservatives. This is one very strange individual explainable only by the presence of senile dementia.

A tax hike on the pay rolls of young, working people? WHY NOT CUT THE BENEFITS OF BABY BOOMERS WHO DIDN'T PREPARE FOR THEIR OWN RETIREMENT?

Posted by: Phokas | Jul 27, 2008 12:04:12 PM

McCain is an idiot unworthy of the nomination. He will lose the election because he deserves to. Republicans are gonn take a whoopin this time because the have left the values of conservatives. I have read that a lot of democrats won't vote for Obama and I'm here to tell you a lot of Republicans won't be voting for McCain because they won't vote for someone who does not hod conservative ideals. Looks like this election will probaby go to the black Messiah and his radical friends.

Can't we count on McCain (McBush) to keep his word on anything. First he say's no new taxes, and now he say's more taxes to pay for social security. The lies and "FLIP-FLOP'S" just keep coming. If they would quit giving away our tax dollar's to other country's and keep our money in this country, and take care of our citizen's, there would be no need to increase taxes. Also, the billion's and billion's their wasting on this Iraqi war could have paid for social security for the next 200 year's.

robert...

great points, but the left dosnt understand the big picture!! they would much rather let the government handle every aspect of their lives. (because they have such a great track record of being responsible i guess). its a joke.
