McCain: Social Security Tax Hike ‘On the Table’

ABC News' Anamarie Rebori reports: Sen. John McCain made clear this weekend that when it comes to fixing Social Security, "everything is on the table," including a possible payroll tax increase.

"There is nothing I would take off the table. There was nothing I would demand," McCain told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview on "This Week." "I think that’s the way that Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill did it -- and that's what we have to do again."

When asked if that includes a possible hike in the payroll tax, McCain reiterated that nothing -- including such a tax hike -- is "off the table."

"I don't want tax increases. Of course, I'd like to have young Americans have some of their money put into an account with their name on it," McCain said.

However, in a February interview with Stephanopoulos, which also aired on "This Week," McCain made a pledge not to raise taxes as president. When Stephanopoulos asked, "Are you a 'read my lips' candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?" McCain responded affirmatively: "No new taxes."

Private account? Turn over my 401K to the government?

Isn't that what Privatization is? we allow the government to turn over our SS accounts to some private enterprise, chosen by the Government, for a fee naturally.

Privatization is nothing but a bonanza for private enterprise. Has nothing to do with what is best for Americans.

and quit taking things out of context!!!!! he didnt say thats what he would do, he just said every option would be on the table. now all of a sudden, his plan is to increase taxes. quit the spinning.

I cannot believe why no one will challenge Sen. McCain. He talks about pork barrel spending, yet no one asks for a specific example (aside from bridge to nowhere). When he said today that he would review all parts of gov't to cut costs - no follow up on which ones.

Then today he says President Putin rather than Prime Minister Putin. He makes mistake after mistake, and no one calls him on it.

He needs to be challenged.

Flip Flopping John McCain the DOUBLE TALK Candidate is all about "No New Tax, No Matter What" for big business and oil corporations and the supper rich, But "YES NEW HIGHER PAYROLL TAX!" for everyone else.

and whats the harm in taxing the hell out of business right?? i mean they're just the ONES WHO CREATE JOBS. it didnt work for carter people. learn from history.

We are indeed going broke. The politicians already raided the trust fund for spending that was out of control. Now they want to try and make it solvent with more taxes. Why change course with regards to our outlandish spending? McCain needs to consult Ron Paul on what to do.

lovinggrandma...

the social security problem and big business have NOTHING to do with each other!!! do you think the oil companies should be taxed in order to pay for our social security???!! two unrealted issues. and just for your pleasure (because you OBVIOUSLY havent looked yet) look at how much of a percentage the rich ALREADY pay in taxes. then tell me if we should"steal from the rich and give to the poor" even more.

Juan "Amnesty" McCain is a patriot! He wants to keep our country strong by keeping the borders WIDE OPEN! He want to be in the Middle East for 100 years to keep Israel safe from the enemies that it creates! Juan McCain has a personal relationship with Baby Jeebus who told him that killing Iranians for jooz is "the right thing to do". Now let's get behind him and shred the rest the constitution and bring in the North American Union. We know the NAU is only being adopted because the control group is only doing what's best for "us". K, now let's win one for McCain because he want's his place in history as the guy that completed The Decider's vision. What do you say? And if you don't want McCain's communist manifesto well you've always got the corporate socialist candidate Obama. Either way you get the "Police State" and I see that as a Win, Win, Win in my book!

Thank you ABC for airing the interview with McCain. At least we have one candidate who will answer questions and talk about something other than himself. Obamabots, please wait at least 30 seconds before you call me a racist because I said something positive about someone other than THE ONE.

Tim, We suppose to be commenting on the social security article, but, as far as off-shore drilling goes, you can thank Bush senior for imposing the ban during his presidency. And yes I do appose more off-shore drilling, because they have location's off-shore that have been approved and have not try drilling there yet. Oil company's alway's want more, more, more. I believe in order to keep our dollar's from going to foreign oil we need to concentrate on alternative fuel, produced in this country.

If you want scary just read the posts that support McCain. It's both disheartening and FRIGHTENING that the "American Idle" crowd is allowed to vote for a candidate that no matter how the vote turns out will steal the election and become the "New Decider". Crashing every plane that he ever flew does not make McCain qualifed to be a military analyst. The USS Forestal Fire is still highly suspect. And McCain's captors nicknaming him "Songbird" because of his easy willingness to commit treason, only means he's a friend to the communists and a traitor, not qualified to be Commander in Chief. http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_mccain_lost_five_u.htm

Privatization of SS would be a disaster like the current banking crisis and the saving and loan fiasco. It would end in another tax payer multi-billion- dollar bailout. I can't imagine any sane person thinking that letting a bunch of greedy finance con artists taking over SS is a good idea, unless of course you're one of them.
