McCain Touts Surge Success Before Obama's Overseas Trip

ABC News' Jennifer Duck reports: Touting the surge strategy, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., declared today "we have succeeded in Iraq" and spoke of his confidence in winning the war in advance of Sen. Barack Obama's trip to the region.

"I'm happy to tell you we've succeeded in Iraq and we—unless we reverse the strategy that’s succeeding we will win this war. But it's fragile and it must be dictated—the strategy must be dictated by the situation on the ground. Not some artificially, politically schedule for withdraw as sen Obama wants to do," McCain told a crowd in Kansas City, MO.

Reporters questioned McCain on his rhetoric of success at a stop in Grand Haven, MI since in the past McCain has phrased the status in Iraq as "succeeding," as opposed to "succeeded."

McCain told reporters, "Military, economic, political, and all the benchmarks we said that the Iraqi government had to meet" have allowed for the word "succeeded" to be used.

However McCain admitted, "They haven’t met them all. Do they have a lot more to go-- distance to go? Yes and it’s very fragile. And can be reversed. But they’ve succeeded and if we will continue this, we will win this war."

He continued saying Obama's initial plan of withdraw would've "lost" the war. "I know how to win wars. And Sen Obama was wrong when he said that the surge would not succeed. And now he says he’s going to evaluate the situation. If we had done what Sen Obama wanted to do, there would be no situation to evaluate because we would’ve lost."

When asked when the war will be won, McCain responded, "I can say the war will be won when we will have the majority of Americans have returned and we have Gen Petraeus and his successor Gen Odierno tell us that the situation is secure. It’s still---we’ve succeed but it’s still fragile."

McCain’s communications director Jill Hazelbaker appeared on cable news channels calling Obama’s trip specifically to Iraq and Afghanistan "a campaign rally overseas" and "one giant photo opportunity."

"Well, Senator Obama is visiting Iraq and Afghanistan. I found it interesting that he released his plan for the way forward in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to visiting the region or talking with any of the commanders on the ground. Let's drop the pretense that this is a fact-finding trip and call it what it is: the first of its kind campaign rally overseas," Hazelbaker said on Fox News.

At first the presumptive Republican nominee seemed surprised with his staff's message telling reporters on his campaign bus he would talk to Hazelbaker about her message. "I can only give you my opinion, and I will talk to her. But the fact is, I’m glad that he’s going to Iraq and I think it’s – I’m glad that he’s going to Afghanistan. It’s long, long overdue, if you want to lead this nation and secure our national security."

However, after a flight from Missouri to Michigan, McCain was careful when telling reporters a few legs of Obama's trip to Europe and the Middle East appear to define it as a political trip. "If he has political rallies in other places, obviously it’s a political trip. But I was speaking specifically.

AP top story, "US, Iraq seek `general time horizon' on troop cuts"

Not 'timetable' and not 'troop withdrawal'. Time horizon? Whoever heard of that! Pathetic.

And the surge is not over. There are 18,000 more troops in Iraq now than before the surge. They're just trying to make things look good for McCain.

What wars has McCain won? None. And neither has Obama but at least Obama had the forsight to see that invading Iraq would be a big mistake while McCain was for it even before Bush!

And it is not only the surge that has brought down violence but also the Mahdi Army cease-fire, the Sunni Awakening and all those walls we built in Baghdad to keep the tribes separated from eachother.

Senator Obama's back yard in Chicago is a war zone of crime and what has he done to stop it? Absolutely nothing. Yet, he thinks he knows how to stop the fighting in countries thousands of miles away. The people of Iraq have been fighting for the last 100 years and this will probably go on regardless of what the USA does. It is true, we should not have invaded and we need to get out ASAP. Senator McCain has the best foreign relations plan.

America has crooked/stolen elections, hungry children and adults, crumbling neiborhoods, high unemployment what has Bush or McCain done to stop it? Absolutely nothing.

Who cares who the Europeans prefer ... if it was up to France, our next President would be Jerry Lewis. How about focusing on who has the experience, judgement and character to protect us and bring prosperity to Americans ... not someone who in the eleventh hour, finally tries to establish foreign policy credentials, in a one week visit, as a transparent political ploy to get himself elected. Where was Obama, when he was supposed to chair the congressional committee on Afghanistan, and never had a single meeting. Why did Obama vote 'present' over 100 times in the senate? Even if he manages a political rally in the Roman Coliseum, he's still just an inexperienced politician, who is not qualified to be President of the United States of America !!!

McCain isn't even fit to lead this nation one way or the other. Meaning, he's too old. He can't handle the job of being president. He can't handle the travel, the daily grind, the headaches, economics, etc. He's been wrong on many things and it sounds like he's the one who has been drinking lots of kool-aid, whining day in and day out about media coverage and throwing tantrums like a 2 year old, "I'm right! I'm right!! I'm right!!!" Give me a break! No one wants to deal with you. Get over it. I'm tired of hearing about the surge. This is how Iraq works...they've been at war since the 1980s. Sometimes they fight, sometimes they don't. We can't do anything about it, unless we intend to live there. Period. We are Americans and don't need to stay there indefinetly. We (our troops) are not Iraqis. It seems like McCain has a listening problem. How many times do you have to be asked to leave? In a place like Iraq, there's no such thing as "winning" a war. It's not like WWII. He doesn't understand that. Obama needs to be on the world stage with people his own age that actually are willing to work with him. Medvedev or Russia is 42, Sarkozy of France 52, King Abdullah of Jordan 46...Pass the dam* torch already!!!!! We've already had George Bush, we don't need McSame. He's just standing on stage and in his town hall meetings shouting about how he can win wars...what else can he do? The economy's in the tank. He's only for rich people. He doesn't have a healthcare plan, it will be what it is now under Bush. He wants to tamper and mess up social security. He's not going to help the poor and middle class (also known as the soon to be poor class if McCain gets elected), and he'd like to keep all that money we could use at home and possibly Afghanistan just going in one direction. He's full of crap. And he does care about being elected as president, or he wouldn't be standing out there on those stages trying to get support. He wouldn't be riding around on a bus from state to state, etc. Don't lie to me McCain, but too late, you already did! If he was so great, he's been around 30 darn years, why hasn't he done anything he claims he can do now? Because this is an election year, that's why. I do not support McSame/McCan't/McBush/Bush III/Bush Lite/McFossil and his willingness to keep things the way they are now. NO NO NO!!!!!!!!! And this surge business...they're all walking around surrounded by military people. If the cameras weren't there, the guards, the guns, the helicopters, the secret service, then I'd say we have something, but no dice! I'm not all about Iraq, but I am all about America. I want to use some of that 10 billion dollars per month over here. We went into Iraq for oil...remember all those protestors with their signs "No blood for oil"? Well, we didn't even get that, but we did get higher gas prices! Thanks McSame!!!

After Obama's whirlwind overseas trip ... he said:

“In terms of me governing, being an effective president, that that trip was helpful, because I think I’ve established relationships and a certain bond of trust with key leaders around the world who have taken measure of my positions and how I operate and I think can come away with some confidence that this is somebody I can deal with."

And ... here is what he actually did on his trip ... you decide if these 9 days of photo ops were enough to establish Obama as a trusted world leader ...
