McCain: 'We're Proud of That Commercial'
July 31, 2008 2:08 PM
ABC News' David Wright reports: Who knew Paris and Britney would ever be a campaign issue???
The McCain campaign's decision to feature the women in a 30-second spot accusing rival Sen. Barack Obama of being a shallow celebrity has consumed the campaign debate today.
At a town hall meeting in Racine, Wisc., Republican Sen. John McCain tried to steer clear. But a young voter wouldn't let him off the hook.
"It seems to me that you've flip flopped," 23 year old Obama supporter Wendy Chavours-Freeman said, referring to McCain's promises to run a clean campaign on the issues.
McCain defended the ad. "All I can say is we’re proud of that commercial," McCain said. "We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans at home and how we can make Americans safe and prosperous and that’s the theme of our campaign."
"I respect and admire sen Obama, but we have stark differences," McCain said. "And those differences need to be drawn."
"These campaigns are tough," he said, "But I'm proud of the campaign we've run."
Earlier today, McCain's campaign manager went so far as to issue a statement accusing Obama of "playing the race card."
"Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It’s divisive, negative, shameful and wrong,” said Rick Davis in a statement.
Davis was responding to Obama's own comments Wednesday in response to the ad. Obama told reporters: "The only way they figure they’re going to win this election is if they make you scared of me. So what they’re saying is, "Well, we know we’re not very good but you can’t risk electing Obama. You know, he’s new, he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency, you know, he’s got a funny name."
Today in Cedar Rapids, Obama chided McCain for raising what he considers a trivial issue: "Given the seriousness of the issues, you’d think we could have a serious debate. But so far, all we've been hearing about is Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. I mean, I do have to ask my opponent, is that the best you can come up with? Is that really what this election is about? Is that what is worthy of the American people?"
For his part, McCain renewed his call for frequent town hall debates with Obama, an offer Obama has so far refused. "Yesterday in case you missed it, he wanted to have a duel. I'm not sure what sort of weapons he had in mind," McCain chuckled. "Why can't we just have a discussion?"

Come on John. Let your commercials tell us what you have to offer. Speaking as a republican, these kinds of ads appear juvenile.

Unfortunately, Obama is in fact all gloss and no substance (sorry to insult Paris and Britney on this). He has been all along. What hurts for the mindless obama followers is that they are themselves forced to realize their own superficiality in following him like sheep. THe resonance this ad has caused is indicative of Obama's weekness, not McCains. More to come as we finally look into Obama's empty record and career.

"Obama just needs to bring the people."
I think he was talking about Obama's 300 advisors. The fumbling fool is going to need them.

There is an unspoken message from the McCain camp that amounts to calling the American people stupid and easily deceived.
As though America can't tell for herself when she's being swayed emotionally.
Obama never talks down to us, but to the contrary he points out that we are at heart a decent and savvy people, wide awake and wanting a change from all of this negativity.

And why is Obama comparing himself to the president on our dollar bill?? Washington was white, I'll give him that, but he did have some record to speak of before becoming president. He also refused salary for his general position and as first president. Careful school boy!

Typical white people. Clinging to their guns and religion.

Word to the wise--get Tivo or some kind of DVR before the debates. McCain is going to literally explode at some point, and you are going to want to be able to replay it over and over on your big screen instead of settling for the little, grainy, bad sound You Tube clips.

"Word to the wise--get Tivo or some kind of DVR before the debates."
And you can fast forward through all of Barry's stutters.

After months of being puzzled at the popularity of Barack Obama, I’ve finally figured out the Obama Playbook. It consists of 3 main offensive plays, as detailed below. Will Obama’s strategy work? Time will tell . . .
1. The ordinary meaning of words are to be placed in a larger “context” or dismissed as incidents of “misspeaking.” Thus, when ABC broadcasts the tape of Michelle Obama admitting she has never been proud of her country, the Obama campaign dismisses it entirely, claiming she misspoke, and then chides ABC by saying, “to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her, I think, is just low class . . . ” (Of course, when Obama takes Senator McCain’s remarks about being in Iraq for 100 years out of context and mis-characterizes them, we are simply supposed to overlook that).
2. Obama’s associations with crazy people and crooks are to be overlooked. In ObamaWorld, any mention of his terrorist friends, white-hating church, or criminal associations is merely a “distraction” from the real issues, as defined by Barack Obama. Obama’s judgement on Iraq is to be admired. His judgement on other issues is not to be questioned.
3. Accuse the Republicans of racism without actually using the word “racist.” In other words, claim Republicans want people to be afraid of him because he “looks different” or has a “funny-sounding name.” Keep up this line of attack, despite the fact that neither John McCain, his surrogates, nor any member of the national Republican Party has attacked Barack Obama on race.

It's a good ad.

John McSame would be cast perfectly in a Metamusal commercial. He's old and cranky!

How dare you Senator McCain. Proud of it?
Ms Hilton and Spears are my write-in canidates for Pres./VP respectively. You sir have the audacity to insult them. Senator Obama's physical attributes are nowhere close to that of Paris and Brittney.

Yeah, those 12 years teaching at Harvard Law and his work as a community organizer are completely empty. At least he didn't leave his first wife after she took care of their kids while he was a POW for five years! Talk about an empty *heart*.
By the way, referring to him as "boy" in your later message reveals your underlying racism.

If you happened to have caught the last Repub debate at the Ronald Reagan Library, Romney was hitting McCain hard and McCain was SO angry, he was saking and went past red-faced and straight to purple. It was hilarious to watch. The little clown hates to be corrected or challenged. Rumors were at the time that Romney dropped out to stop the debates, since McCain was going to win and the RNC did not want another repeat.

Or finish high school with a D- average and "graduate" the Naval Academy 894/899. McCain is an empty hat!
Enough of the "socially promoted" bottom of the class, drunken frat boys as POTUS.
This year I vote for intelligence.

This ad has generated a lot of talk on the forums and blogs, and most people who are posting seem to feel it is harming Mccain more than Obama.
Mccain said he was going to run a cleaner and less vitriolic campaign, one focused on the issues and not simply attacking his opponent with substance-less tripe like this ad.
"Mission accomplished".....!

"This year I vote for intelligence."
Would an intelligent guy sit in a racist church for 20 years and not realize what it was all about?

Ralph, learn the facts (again, I repeat my comment about sheepish Obama fans). He taught at U of Chicago for 12 years (I was there) and read yesterday's NY Times article or mention on this web site of it and his "unimpressive" tenor there. He refused to even take a position on the ACLU case that went to the supreme court, trying to overturn police efforts to combat gang violence in Hyde Park. I rest my case about Obama's followers. Read his record!!!

Surely McCain's campaign team must know how desperate and childish these ads make their candidate look....don't they? They've not come forward with ONE thing to say for their campaigns (possibly because they have NOTHING new to offer us than the past 7 1/2 years have), and they continue to act kids mocking a classmate.
Personally, I hope he keeps sending out these ludicrous ads, making him look worse and worse each time. If he keeps this up, Obama won't need to run any attack ads....McCain's shooting himself in the foot quite nicely.
