More U.S. Troops in Afghanistan?
July 23, 2008 5:54 PM
ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports: Two senior defense officials tell ABC News that more troops are expected to be directed to Afghanistan in the coming weeks to support what one official called "near-term '08 operations."
How many additional troops? Officials say it will be one or two battalions (there are about 750 troops in a battalion) and possibly more.
The troops in question include units to provide route clearance, helicopter airlift, bomb disposal, and other support.
The request for additional troops comes from CENTCOM and has not been approved yet by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, although the officials expect the request will be soon be approved.
The specific units to be diverted to Afghanistan are still to be identified. Most of these troops are expected to come from units now deployed elsewhere in the world. The Joint Staff has ordered the other regional commanders (Pacific Command, SOUTHCOM, etc.) to identify units that could be spared for Afghanistan. Some could possibly come from Iraq or elsewhere in CENTCOM.
This flow of more troops is separate, and in addition to, the three brigades (10,000) combat troops and trainers that commanders have previously said they need. That larger influx of troops to Afghanistan likely won't happen until after there are further drawdowns in Iraq.

Obama'08, actually were did you hear either Bush or McCain say they not support troops in Afghanistan? What makes you so sure the Obama will go against the military leaders. Speaks a great game to get himself elected.

Cool! Obama gets his own war. Hope it works out. Crickets indeed!

It isn't that Bush and McCain don't know what they are doing, the case is they haven't known all along or we would have been full strength in Afghanistan to start with.
Mis-guided dimwits.

Hey great now we can invade Pakistan! Shouldn't have any problems finding WMD's over there.

We should have gone full force into
Afghanistan in the beginning. Won and
came home. But Bush lied and took ran
the country in fear and went to war with
Iraq for no reason but to let Bin Laden
and his tyrants get more powerful, now
our soldiers have to pay the price for
Bush's idiots ways. Eight years of
a man who was in the lowest bottom of
his class. All he ever learned in life
is to LIE. McCain will be no better.
I can't wait for Obama to beat the living daylights out of McCain on election day.
And or Americans to show Bush and McBush
that Americans are not stupid and we can't be LIED to and made to feel SCARED
AND FEARFUL.
Shame of Bush and his Administration for
using our Military men and women for
his own gain. Our TROOPS deserve way
better than Bush and McCain.

It is the Taliban, and AlQueda in Afghanistan who are responsible for the deaths of 3000 Americans on September 11. The war in Afghanistan is the only war which ever should have been started, and fought by our great US soldier.
Instead of doing fighting the war in Afghanistan, and winning the war in Afghanistan against the terrorists, Geroge Bush, helped by the vote of John McCain went to war against Iraq knowing that they were doing it based on false information.
The war in Iraq has resulted in 4000 US soldiers being killed.
JOHN McCAIN HAS SAID THAT EVEN KNOWING THAT THE WAR IN IRAQ WAS STARTED ON FALSE INFORMATION, HE STILL WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
SO JOHN McCAIN WOULD AGAIN SEND 4000 U.S SOLDIERS TO DIE IRAQ!!!
John McCain is a lunatic, the man has admitted that he would be willing to go to war on false information, and get thousands of our soldiers killed!!!!

We are fortunate that Bush stuck to his guns, despite brutal criticism. He ended up being right, and the Dems ended up being wrong.
If we had followed BO's plan we whould have had another Vietnam already. Instead victory is in sight.

ksm--yes we are close to victory in a war we should have never fought wow so good---NOT!!!! if bush would have done what the democrats had wanted and what americans thought he was doing we would have had bin laden dead by now instead we just pissed off more and more radicals by invadeing iraq and now occupying iraq.

All I have to say is Americans are not
safer than we were. Bush has let Bin
Laden and his tyrants build for seven
years and if you read and listen to
the news they are getting more powerful.
Bush has allowed AlQueda to get stronger and stronger. Seven years of of fighting
as war that had nothing to do with 9-11.
God help us all if we are attacked again
by them. We can all thank Bush!!!
Life means nothing to Bush, our soldiers
did not take an Oath to be Lied to
and used for Bush's own selfish needs.
Bush is a sick human being!!!

KSM,
Do you ever see the show "Intervention?" Because you OBVIOUSLY have some type of addiction that is clouding your judgement.
After nearly 7 YEARS!! of complete chaos, you are talking about victory because of a few months of declining deaths.
This is how you define "victory"?
GEESH !!!!!

This proves that Senator Obama has been right from the very beginning. Iraq is a huge distraction that has prevented the United States from destroying the terrorist organization that carried out the 9/11 attacks. Now, Bush is openly admitting failure, but also failing to do anything to remedy the situation. History will regard the invasion of Iraq as the greatest strategic blunder ever committed by any President of the United States. Obama 08!!!

Boy, ANOTHER case of Bush following Obama's lead. Why doesn't Bush just step down and allow Obama to take over, as he certainly will next January, and allow this country to start the recovery from 7+ years of republican leadership.
