Obama Blasts Conservative Attacks Against Wife: 'Debate Me Not Her'

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said conservative criticism of his wife, Michelle, infuriates him.

"I don't have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife," Obama told the women's magazine Glamour in an interview to run in the magazine's October issue. "And you know, the problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face."

Obama, who is vying for the support of women voters who flocked to Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign during the primaries, argued his wife and Clinton have been the target of similar conservative attacks.

"Hillary Clinton was subject to this, others have been subject to this in the past," Obama told Glamour editor -in-chief Cindi Leive Wednesday, "It is part of our political environment that I'd like to change."

Asked whether he blamed Sen. John McCain's campaign for the attacks, Obama said, "I wouldn't say the McCain campaign itself, but I would say that the apparatus of conservative columnists, blogs and the like. Talk shows, talk radio....When you see in the span of two or three or four weeks essentially the same talking points being used on a whole variety of shows or a whole variety of columns, over and over again."

Michelle Obama sparked conservative outrage when she said during the primaries it was "the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country."

She later clarified her remarks, but conservative media outlets repeatedly replayed the tape and the Tennessee Republican Party launched an online video criticizing her. Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin called her Obama's "bitter half," and the conservative National Review magazine called her "Mrs. Grievance."

Obama said a barrage of conservative attacks against his wife has taken "a toll." Michelle Obama is viewed more favorably than Cindy McCain, 48 percent to 39 percent, according to a June ABC News/Washington Post poll, however her negative ratings are also higher.

"It's infuriating, but it's not surprising," Obama said, "because let's face it: what happened was that the conservative press -- Fox News and the National Review and columnists of every ilk -- went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way, and treated her as the candidate in a way that you just rarely see the Democrats try to do against Republicans."

"I've said this before: I would never have my campaign engage in a concerted effort to make Cindy McCain an issue, and I would not expect the Democratic National Committee or people who were allied with me to do it. Because essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn't sign up for this. They're supporting their spouse," Obama said, "So it took a toll. If you start being subjected to rants by Sean Hannity and the like, day in day out, that'll drive up your negatives."

Michelle Obama has attempted to soften her image, appearing on women's television programs and developing a new campaign speech highlighting her working-class, Chicago roots.

The Obamas have also recently granted interviews to Access Hollywood, US Weekly, and Glamour, entertainment media with a high female fan base.

Defending his wife in the Glamour interview, Obama said, "Everybody who knows Michelle knows how extraordinary she is. She's ironically the most quintessentially American woman I know. She grew up in a 'Leave it to Beaver' family. She is the best mother I know. And our kids are a testimony to that, because she's really had to raise them, oftentimes without me being there.

"She's the most honest person I know, she's smart, she's funny, so yeah, it infuriates me. And I think that it is an example of the erosion of civility in our political culture that she's been subjected to these attacks," he said. "If they've got a difference with me on policy, they should debate me. Not her."

Oh come on. Hillary endured it in 92(even poor chelesa when she was 13), and bill endured it in 2008. She out there campaigning, going on the view, access hollywood and we can't say anything negative about her? What land does he live in?

Where does this man stand tomorrow on the issues? Obama has reversed himself on gun control—he declared that the D.C. gun ban was constitutional, only to later praise the recent Supreme Court ruling that the gun ban is unconstitutional and now he favors it, against using faith based institutions to deliver public services, against immunity for tele-communication companies for terror investigations, for raising social security taxes, for imposing the Fairness Doctrine on talk shows, Obama spoke to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and stated that he would support an “undivided Jerusalem” and now he says he was misunderstood, Obama stated that he was willing to meet rogue leaders “without preconditions” only later to declare that certain preconditions were necessary before engaging in talks, he pledged to accept public financing and then said he would forgo public financing because “the system is broken”, it was the same system months earlier when he announced he pledged he would use it, he based his entire campaign on withdrawal from Iraq, and then he states he will consult with military generals first and redefine the war, then he states that his plan for withdrawal is FIRM without these talks, but then he is going to Iraq to have the talks. He wants “run” from Iraq and leave the country and all our efforts unprotected by leaving no military brigades behind but he wants to start another full scale war in Afghanistan and maybe Pakistan. He stated during the primary that he backed merit pay for teachers, but before the unions a month ago, he was opposed to it--------Now he has out a video playing in many states. It states that he reduced the welfare rolls in Illinois by 80%. This is a complete lie. Obama opposed the 1996 welfare reform act. When questioned about his stance against the welfare bill on March 14, 2007 while addressing the International Association of Firefighters he said on ABC News “"I tend not to look back to what would have been done 10 years ago. We’re talking about what I’m going to be doing for the next 10 years." When this same question was poised to Mr. Obama a month later he said “I’m not going to re-litigate what happened back in the 90s”. Obama opposed the 1996 welfare reform act and called it “disturbing”. What Obama is referring to in his Ad that he is taking complete credit for is a local implementing law that the State was required to pass after the reform was passed. These are not flip-flops but true deceptions in order to get votes!

Oh please...

When was the last time you heard a critique of Michelle Obama? He put her on the campaign trail and she embarrased him. Now he takes her off the trail and no one has anything to say. This is greivance theater. Where are the critiques of her and not of what she said? He just wants sympathy to draw the female vote.

And since he wants to debate he can debate, um what's his name-McCain,the guy he is running against yet keeps ducking. That challenge he issued to dabate McCain anytime anywhere is looking prety hollow.

OK, little Bambi -- If you're going to send your wife out as a political asset, then she has to take the heat, too. Good with the bad, just like marriage.

You have a fawning press, insane supporters and, did I mention a fawning press? CIndy McCain has been villified and you don't hear her whining.

But I forgot: messiahs don't' get criticized.

The small minded negativity of the conservative right spewed by Fox, Hannity, et al, who've chosen to spew nastiness at Michelle Obama, and skew her words are merely demonstrating their own abysmal ignorance. Obama cherishes his wife; of course he's angered by nasty jibes. Any husband who wouldn't react as he has done demonstrates lack of respect for his spouse if not outright contempt.

Michelle Obama is no shrinking violet. She is a strong, intelligent woman and if she is out on the trail making speeches on behalf of his candidacy then she and the issues she discusses are fair game. Obama can't have it both ways. Really he, his wife and his advisors want no criticism whatsoever. We are just supposed to believe that it is his manifest destiny to be President and accept his vague 'hope', 'change' and 'unity' tripe as the gospel that will deliver us to who knows where. Any criticism is met with charges cynicism and racism rather than an actual intellectual debate. Hollow. Bottom line: if she speaks for him, she is open to criticism.

This is just another example of how the republicans operate. Look what they did to Kerry with the swift-boating. I can't understand why every veteran in the country isn't outraged by what happened there. Obama with be GREAT in 2008!!!

I'm not voting Michelle or Cindy for president, neither of them should be in the crosshairs of the mud machines. And it should be noted that Senator Obama is hardly trying to make this an issue - he is just responding to a question in a fluff magazine interview, it's not like he's putting up a detail position and policy paper on his website (as he is wont to do on actual substantive issues).

Someone here said, "well at least he doesn't call her the c word in public." No, Obama goes one better. He gives Hillary the finger during a speech in front of thousands. Luckily for Obama, there is almost no media scrutiny.

Poor Michelle. Chelsea Clinton came under brutal attack while campaigning for Hillary. AND WHO DO YOU THINK WAS ATTACKING CHELSEA? Sorry poor Michelle, this Hillary Democrat will shed no tears for you.

if you cant take the heat, get out of the kitchen poor lil obama.

Talk about a double standard. He put her out there, she muffed the ball, people came after her, now he wants everyone to stop. Get a life. They haven't seen nothing yet. This is the beginning, wait a while.

I think he better stick to the liberals in SF and other parts of the country who think he is the best thing since sliced bread. He and she have been treated with kid gloves during the primary, now they can't take the heat.

I will use the c word! She is a COW!! The majority of people, not just left or right feel the same about her! She is a militant COW.

Obama said Michelle is the quitessential American. I thought the quintessential American is proud of this country. the quitessential American is religious for the love of God and not because the church spewees racist and hate messages. And to top that off a good mother would not poison her kids mind with hate and racism by going to the hatefull church for 20 years. In election Michelle is fair game and so are the associations of the Obama family

I'd choose Michelle Obama 100 to 1 over Ms. Elitist Cindy McCain any day! Michelle will make a wonderful first lady and I look forward to her in the white house for 8 years.

BTW I am white.

Let me say.....IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WTIH THIS.....they are inhuman....there is absouletly NOTHING WRONG with a man defending his wife against nasty minded repubs and there narrow way of thinking.....Obama is an upstanding man, and he will bring RESPECT back to America....Watch the welcome he receives over seas because they are much more advanced in their thinking....It is Americans who are racist, because of the legacy of Slavery this Country has.....So, all this talk about Obama not closing the gap with Whites.....reflects more negatively on Whites than on him....What are the whites problems to not accept him? And remember, this man is also 50% White....because of his Mother....so, he is BIRACIAL.....Something to think about!!!

BUZZARD'S KORNER!

So it's not ok to comment on very valid concerns when the comments are about his wife but ok when it was about Hillary... Hum, I don't think so! It plays both ways. If she's out there campaigning for Obama, anything she says can be analyzed. After all, she's his confidant and most probably share the same feelings (resentments) for this country
