Obama Plays Down Significance of Foreign Trip
July 27, 2008 2:48 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., responded to criticisms over his 9 day, 8 country foreign trip, saying that just because he "did it really well" doesn’t mean that it was any different than when Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., or any other presidential candidates has traveled abroad in the past.
"I was puzzled by this notion that somehow what we were doing was in any way different from what Sen. McCain or a lot of presidential candidates have done in the past. Now, I admit we did it really well. But that shouldn't be a strike against me."
Speaking before the annual UNITY conference in Chicago, in his first public event since retuning to the U.S, Obama pushed back criticism of his foreign trip being "audacious" because it looked like he had been "running for president of the world" rather than focusing on the US.
Obama insinuated that his performance while abroad left little to criticize thus prompting people to impugn of the trip itself, "If I was bumbling and fumbling through this thing, I would have been criticized for that."
Senator McCain took a foreign trip earlier this year which Senator Obama used for comparison, saying he visited the same countries and met with most of the same leaders, "and nobody suggested that was audacious," he added.
Senator Obama traveled to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Jordan, France, German and Britain last week and said his travels and meeting with many foreign leaders and opposition leaders was helpful in terms of governing and being an effective president, should he be successful in November.
"I think I've established relationships and a certain bond of trust with key leaders around the world who have taken measure of my positions and how I operate and I think can come away with some confidence that this is somebody I can deal with."
Since retuning to the U.S., Obama and his campaign have made it a point to refocus this week on domestic issues.
Obama will meet with members of his economic team, including Paul Volcker, Warren Buffett and Bob Rubin in Washington on Monday.
"People are understandably concerned about the immediate effects of the economy," Senator Obama added, "And that's what we will be talking about for the duration.
In addition to economic meetings, Obama's campaign events will be economic in nature this week. Obama will head to Missouri and Iowa to hold an economic roundtable and also meet with Iowans affected by recent flooding.

Obama is now going to be talking about the economy every day from now until the election.
He is meeting with economic gurus tomorrow including William Buffet to discuse how to improve the economy in the short-term.
Then Obama will be going on a bus tour in Ohio and then Iowa to discuss "It's the economy, stupid" with voters.
Enough about the surge, time horizons, and Berlin. It's time for the ECONOMY!!

Senator Obama stated "he did it really well." What did he do really well except make a political speech to 200,000 Germans who could not vote? This whole trip was a waste of taxpayers dollars for political purposes. He was too selfish to even visit wounded American troops. I can understand his downplaying the trip as an after-thought. He certainly lost respect from American voters.

Tamrya,
That's right, let's shift attention away from Iraq as it is clear that Obama called it wrong.
And I think you meant WARREN BUFFETT. Hopefully Buffett will talk some sense into Obama and tell him you don't double capital gains during a recession!

Mary, Let's look at the two most blatant lies in your post:
Lie #1: "a waste of taxpayers dollars for political purposes"
Truth: The days spent in Iraq and Afghanistan were part of his job and no more than McCain and dozens of other Senators not running have done. The days spent in Israel and Europe were entirely paid for by the Obama campaign, not the taxpayer.
Lie #2: "He was too selfish to even visit wounded American troops." It has been pretty clearly hashed out in the media that the Pentagon threw up blocks to his visit to the wounded troops in Germany. If it was a matter of selfishness, he would have never put it on the schedule to start with nor would he have spent as much time visiting active troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In under an hour Obama created "bonds of trust" with all these world leaders. He truly is the messiah, isn't he? Now if he can just get all those hard working, gun toting, Bible thumping Americans to trust him he will be crowned King of the World!

ja: Why do people have to lie to attack Obama? He has NEVER proposed doubling the capital gains tax. He is on record as stating: "I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton, which was the 28 percent. I would — and my guess would be it would be significantly lower than that."
When you throw out easily disproven lies it taints your actual arguments.

thank you, jhw539, for dispelling mary's lies. unfortunately, there are certain to be more.

Yeah, the decision not to visit the wounded troops has been thoroughly analyzed. He was told he could come, but without his entourage. Now come on, you don't expect Rock Star Obama to give up some time to visit the wouunded troops when he had reporters and crowds of Europeans waiting to touch the hem of his garments, do ya????

jhw539, with respect to the trips made by mccain and other senators, did the taxpayers pay for three TV news achors and a plane load of media and campaign staff too? as for the wounded troops in Germany, the Pentagon was clear that Obama could go, but only with his senate staff and no media. Obama made a CHOICE not to go.

I donno if you don't like other people actually LIKING America, but I thought his speech was awesome and made me feel really good about being American and having him represent us

Mary,
Try to remember that Germany is our ally. Allies are a good thing to have when you are in a fight!
Try to remember that Germany is a democratic nation and it is ultimately up to the German public whether the German government gives our efforts to fight terrorism their complete support.
Obama's message in Germany was simple: We need to work together to fight terrorism. Your message to us is that you hate America.
QUESTION 1: HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO ATTACKED US ON 9/11 WERE IN IRAQ BEFORE BUSH/MCCAIN INVADED IRAQ?
QUESTION 2: WHEN WILL JOHN MCCAIN ADMIT THAT HE WAS WRONG TO SUPPORT THE WAR IN IRAQ IN THE FIRST PLACE?
There is much to question regarding McCain's judgement on that!

jhw539, Senator Obama's Most Excellent
Adventure was a campaign event ... from start to finish. You can't spend a few hours in Afghanistan and then "know it all". It was a media blitz trip ... and a most excellent taxpayer funded adventure.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 65% of Likely Voters oppose an increase in the Capital Gains tax. Just 16% favor an increase, while a fifth of voters are not sure.

It's amazing that people are even talking about this trip in a negative way. As far as I'm concerned, McCain made an issue about it because he has nothing else to talk about. Sadly, McCain is acting like a loser. Also, Americans should be happy that Europe gave Obama so much press. Frankly, we need to realize we need Europe more than we do any other single country. America we are not the only people in the world. Therefore, stop making an issue about a non issue.

Mccain's camp in deflecting criticism that he too visited teh same, if not more countries that Obama. A few months ago McCain trumpeted them as a evidence of his grander standing and vast experience.
McCain does have vast experience from spending over 30 years inside the Beltway which is EXACTLY the experience this country does NOT need.

Curious: For the trip made by Senator Obama the taxpayers did not pay for three TV news anchors and a plane load of campaign staff. They flew on a plane chartered by his campaign (or maybe the anchors were sent by their networks - not sure on that). That the taxpayer paid for any of that is a lie.
The issue of the visit in Germany has been well publicized, there is no point arguing it with partisans here. It should be emphasized that Obama NEVER wanted to take cameras or media with him on the visit - he is a Senator who has visited wounded trips before, with no media or pictures, and he is flat opposed to using wounded vets for campaign purposes. The Pentagon clearly stated that his visit would be viewed as a campaign stop and he doesn't make vets campaign props, so he scrapped it.

Big difference slick. John is part of national security committee/armed services committee over his years. He served in war and brings common message to our troops, including the wounded. So slick, you had cameras and reporters in tow and turned it into a shallow spectacle. One writer has already termed this Obamapalooza. This is one sick puppy.

FACT: McCain supported this war from the beginning. No?
FACT: McCain opposed veteran benefits increase. No?
FACT: The instructor that completed McCain's training called him one of the worst students he's ever had (look it up) and called him a clown. No? Just read this:
McCain = scary clown.
