Obama 'Puzzled' by Frenzy Over Iraq War Plan Comments
July 05, 2008 4:36 PM
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama told reporters he was “puzzled” by the press coverage he received on Thursday when he held two separate press conferences to explain his plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
On Thursday in Fargo, N.D,, Obama told reporters in a morning press conference that he will “continue to refine” his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq in 16 months.
Reporters immediately jumped on the comments that showed that Obama’s expressed openness to adjust his long-held 16-month withdrawal plans was at odds with the stance that he took during the primary campaign.
At his second hastily called press availability Thursday, Sen. Obama insinuated that the McCain campaign had primed the press and were to blame for the interpretation of his position.
En route to a speech in St Louis today, the Senator told reporters on his plane that the news cycle his comments caused was perplexing.
“I was a little puzzled by the frenzy that I set off by what I thought was a pretty innocuous statement, which is that I am absolutely committed to ending the war,” he said.
Obama reiterated his commitment to his withdraw plan again. “I will call my joint chiefs of staff and give them an assignment and that is to end the war,” he said. “I think what’s important is to understand the difference between strategy and tactics. I have always believed that our invasion of Iraq was a strategic blunder.”
He continued, “The tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the withdrawal. Those are things that are all based on facts and conditions, and you know I'm not somebody who, unlike George Bush, is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions. I want to pay attention to what’s happening on the ground.”
Sen. Obama -- who plans a trip to Iraq this month -- took issue with reporters who “finely calibrated” his statements, and specific words, on his Iraq War plan. “I wasn’t saying anything that I hadn’t said before,” Obama said.
“I don’t think in anyway it is inconsistent with prior statements and doesn’t change my strategic view that this war has to end and that I am going to end it as president," he repeated again.

Americans should be very concerned about Obama "being puzzled over his comments on Iraq." Free Ride does not get it because he has had a free ride and has not been vetted by the press. Now that he is the party's nominee, he gets more scrutiny, particularly when he screws up like on his comments on Iraq. It is good that he is being held accountable, though for this Hillary Democrat, I will be voting for John.

Did poor Barry think he controlled the press???
Get a clue, pal--if you FLIP FLOP, they will call you on it. Since you do it almost daily, they just wait for the next one to come out.
Whining that the McCain camp primed them is just plain wimpy and dishonest.
Backtrack Obama is his new name.

The press say one negative thing and he doesn't get it. Just think what he would say if the press really did it's job.

I want our next president to actually listen to others. The McBUSH way is to stay the course in spite of the facts. Disaster.

The journalist and newspapers did a poor job of reporting. In speeches going back to 2007 he always said he would not be careless about the withdrawals and include input from those on the ground.
Poor reporting and very littl critical thinking being done when covering both candidates lately.

You quoted <"I'm so smart that I knew this was going to be a long hard fought war and I still wanted to go" "heck me and Joe lieberman were put in charge of selling it by the Bush administration.'
lease reference your "cite".
Enquiring minds want to know.
Thanks

If it was good governing to withdraw troops on an absolutely inflexible schedule regardless of new developments, any stubborn moron would make an excellent president.
Look no further than the last eight wonderful years of Cowboy George to see how this theory works out.
People who live their lives like that are ultimately taken care of through a form of natural selection, but it takes a bit longer with those born into rich families with political connections.

This is the MSM trying to make a story out of nothing again. Pathetic.

Where is John McCain? I understand he does not do work on weekends because he needs his rest. If he ever becomes POTUS that won't be acceptable. Is McCain up to the task??

Refine does NOT mean reverse.

Oh yes, the media is trying to influence this election. McCain is given a free pass from the media regarding his flip flops on Iraq. First, Mcwar stated USA will be in Iraq for 100 years, then he said maybe 50 years. Then he said, in his dream USA be in Iraq until the year 2013. Last week he said "we will withdraw, but we will withdraw with victory and honor". Notice in his earlier statement he gave a timetable for withdrawing and now he is not given a timetable. The media has clearly showing their bias.

Nixon did not got us out of VN you guys need to dig and study more of your history.Ixon was forced out VN by congress not funding anymore money. I just want to put that message out to you Obama lovers to understand the President cannot just say "That's it no more war". Come on guys think for just a little I don't even think at this point Congress can even be able to do such a thing however they did prommised so to win their o6 majority in the house. So my point is please don't beleive the troop out of iraq tactic. you will be fool.

After all McCain's so called military experience he led us into the most senseless war. If as a military guy and all the experience in the senate McCain got the war wrong then why is he even in the senate, let alone run for president.
I can not vote for a person who gets his area of expertise so wrong. What is the point?

It sound like the Republicans are trying to get Obama off message.
Posted by: Deborah | Jul 5, 2008 6:07:14 PM
Hey, the media got it wrong again. The Media just can't get it right. Obama plans to talk to the generals and learn "first hand" in a few hours the entire situation in Iraq but plans to continue on with his full plan of removing all of our troops from Iraq in 16 months no matter what the generals tell him. Obama has judgment based on his own judgment.

HonestAbe,
You are exactly right, Obama has not changed his position...
You see the media needs to make this a "horse race" to keep ratings up. That is why if they find even some fake chink in Obama's armor they go after it and trump it up. Can you imagine what would happen if they quit propping this old senile fool McBush up? The race would all but be over and this is only July!
So they throw it out there on the blogs and immediately all of the ignorant die hard sore loser Clintonites and Republican McCrazies jump on it and pile on!
Too bad for all the Clinton sore losers and the McBushes, because it won't change the outcome in November.
The country wants a change and does NOT want 4 more years of BUSH!
Obama will win in a landslide come November!!!!

Puzzled? The guy is as dumb as a stick!
Posted by: Soetoro No! | Jul 5, 2008 6:11:58 PM
He used the word "redefine" which simply means no changes to my original plan---doesn't anyone understand. And it doesn't matter what the general say we are going to leave Iraq, left them have their country back to lose it to the terrorists and let the terrorists grow in strength to come over here and get us. Hey, Obama let's remove all of our soldiers from all of the bases around the world and just sit tight and wait and see what happens.

The freshman Senator is in for a very rude awakening when/if he is finally allowed to talk to people who actually serve in the military, know how troop movements work, and what is involved in moving a force of that magnitude out of that area. Now is not the time to put someone in the Oval office who was not even a cub scout when it comes to responsible management of the military. I have personally watched him in an interview say that he would move troops against the advice of his generals because he was the CiC and I do not find it acceptable to lose more lives in an unsuccessful retreat than were lost in Nam.

Obama has not talked to any active Generals yet.
Will the real Barack Obama, Please stand up.
