Obama 'Won't Back Off One Bit' on His Tough-Love Message

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., says that he won’t back down on his “tough love” message to African Americans -– a subject that prompted Jesse Jackson's angry open-mic gaffe this past week.

Obama told reporters aboard his plane to San Diego that Americans need to recognize that there is a problem when more than a half of African American children are growing up without a father in the house.

“That is a problem and I won’t back up one bit in asserting that that’s a problem that we have to be honest about," he said.

Obama’s tough love message to African American fathers came most notably in a Fathers Day speech last month in which he told fathers that “any ol' fool” could conceive a child –- but it takes a man to be father.

Many, including Jesse Jackson, took issue with the speech, and the manner in which Obama spoke to his audience. This week, Jackson sparked a controversy when Fox News Channel released a video in which Jackson was caught with a hot mic saying that Obama was “talking down to black people.”

Obama confirmed that Jackson’s feelings were well known to him before the tape was released –- communicated to him from Jackson himself.

“I had spoken to him before, a few days before what he said was released," Obama said, "and we had actually discussed some of the concerns he had raised about my fatherhood speech.”

Obama said that he told Jackson be believes that there are structural inequalities in the country that have to be dealt with.

“My argument is simply that it’s not an 'either-or' proposition, it’s a 'both-and' proposition," Obama said. "The government and society as a whole has an obligation to deal with poverty, particularly poverty that’s deep-rooted not just in the inner cities, but in rural communities all across America.”

Obama said his conversation with Jackson was not met with a lot of open resistance on the other end of the phone.

“In my conversation, I think it would be hard for him to disagree with that since many of the things I have said are the things that he has said in the past,” Obama said.

The presumptive Democratic nominee has since accepted Jackson’s apology for his remarks, but confirmed they have not spoken since the controversial tapes of Jackson were released.

Obama is awesome! I am proud of him.

Whether a strategy on not, the message is legitmate and relevent. It's ok to criticize black culture and do to so without being branded a racist. Or, more appropriately, until one can criticize without declarations of racism, the problems within black culture won't be fixed. I differ a bit with Obama that it's big "gubment's" job to run all our lives. One one hand, his new ad claims he promotes one's self-reliance yet then says gubment needs to fix poverty. Can't have it both ways. He show's his marxist commitment.

Amazing! The icon of Marxist philosophy and policies; The messiah to the ignorant and uninformed has finally discovered what conservatives have been claiming for the last 40 years. A fine example of Progressive ideals and thought processes, that are, as usual, outdated.

It is time for Obama to step up and start discussing how Progressives and their Marxist Teacher's union have destroyed our public education system. It is time for Obama to explain why minorities can't go to a school where teaching actually occurs. It is time for Progressives to accept credit for all of their intellectually bankrupt policies that are heading this nation towards third-world status. Only a certified Idiot could call the policies of Marxists and Stalinist - Progressive. Unless you are implying that these policies lead to progressively totalitarian control. That makes me feel like fainting.

Cynthis where did you get that information- I do not find this presumption anywhere.

I'm glad McCain has so much to say about this. He probably hasn't noticed a thing.

Obama: If you don't like what he's saying today, wait until tomorrow!

Obam is the elitist.

I am continually amazed by the absolute ignorance shown in these blogs.

People wonder how we got Bush, twice.

Not one of you EVER promote McCain. All you can do is preach hate and fear over Obama.

McCain strongly believes in the trickle down theory of economics. Give the largest sums to the rich and it will trickle down to the poor.

How's that working out for you all?

Anyways I do beleive its a step up, there is nothing wrong with the message excpet for it's politically calculated.

Fact check! Obama has been saying this same message since 2002. So for six years he has been pandering to the white voters, LOL?

Um....Ok! Love the uninformed!

Raliegh,

Exactly! And McCain wants to give companies like Exxon Mobil a 1 BILLION tax break. Thank God! Lord knows Exxon is trouble and needs more of OUR tax money just to stay afloat, LOL!

david from texas - um, so what? McCain is still much, much worse.

I'm not an African American but Obama's message on Fathers Day Sunday was well put. You watch these shows of child paternity and African American women are usually the guest.

"Since the majority of unwed mothers in this country are white"

False

Here are the facts
*81 percent of White women and 77 percent of Hispanics and Asians will marry, but only 52 percent of Black women will marry

Katie from Kentucky - yes he has!

disgusted in Illinois - Obama's stunt won't sway the white vote; relax. I'm 52, white and have worked two jobs for the past 21 years. I'm not voting for him simply because he criticized a race. What he said was only comon sense. I'm not voting for him because I believe in small government, strong defense, individual freedoms based on Constitiution, lessening the tax burdened on individuals/corporations, free market- capitalism and know very well Marxism has failed the world and will continue to fail the world. You may be surprised to discover the world is bigger that the issue(s) of a single race. Nice try.

Oh please! Obama hasn't said anything Cosby hasn't said or any other progressive black person for that matter. This crap is ruining black communities and the civil rights leaders of old haven't given this social ill the needed attention it deserves. Period! So they shouldn't take issue when someone else from our own community does.

I'm glad Obama "went there!" because other blacks (including myself) need help in the trenches in shedding light on this destructive behavior and the many others that are eradicating our community!

As they say, a hit dog barks the loudest! If you aren't guilty of this behavior then ferme ta bouche...otherwise, roll up your sleeves and help clean up some of this mess that's hurting black children.

Um...so you are going to vote Repub, who have spent the last 7.5 years wiping their fannies with the Constitution? That's a joke, right? Under McCain YOU will have LESS rights and will be LESS safe. Just wait til we are at war with Iran. Russia and China will side with Iran and so will the new government in Iraq. Good times!

BTW, keep your eyes on the banking system over the next few weeks, there is a list of 50 (50!!!) that are poised to fail. And this is all thanks to Phil Gramm! And you want HIM to have even more power?

Amazing!

Obama's not outspending McCain 6 to 1. During the primaries he outspent Hillary 2-1 sometime 3-1. It's about even right now between John McCain and Obama on spending. Obama will increase the spendings after the convention. And as far as I know, McCain leads in NO poll.

Also, the polls are based on the popular vote. On average Obama leads by 5 based on the popular vote. On the electoral college Obama leads

317-221

Obama landslide

Go Obama! Great statement and indication of being in touch with real issues and addressing them openly. Looking forward to people's president again.

david in texas,

I have been following Obama since 2002 when he made a speech against going to war with Iraq. I have been watching him ever since. I know exactly where he stands and hasn't shifted much in all those years. But people want to parse every single word, looking for him to fail. That is out of fear.

That's a shame, because what we should really fear is McCain. Phil Gramm is the robber baron who has orchestrated the Enron Loophole and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which have ruined our economy. I do not want that criminal anywhere near Washington in a position of power.

What about those of us who don't like either McCain or Obama? The 2-party system is failing America IMO. Neither party's candidate is all that much better than the other. We need something else. What, I don't know. But I do think we need change beyond that which the 2-party system can offer us. It's just 2 sides of the same coin, and I personally am tired of it.
