Obama 'Won't Back Off One Bit' on His Tough-Love Message

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., says that he won’t back down on his “tough love” message to African Americans -– a subject that prompted Jesse Jackson's angry open-mic gaffe this past week.

Obama told reporters aboard his plane to San Diego that Americans need to recognize that there is a problem when more than a half of African American children are growing up without a father in the house.

“That is a problem and I won’t back up one bit in asserting that that’s a problem that we have to be honest about," he said.

Obama’s tough love message to African American fathers came most notably in a Fathers Day speech last month in which he told fathers that “any ol' fool” could conceive a child –- but it takes a man to be father.

Many, including Jesse Jackson, took issue with the speech, and the manner in which Obama spoke to his audience. This week, Jackson sparked a controversy when Fox News Channel released a video in which Jackson was caught with a hot mic saying that Obama was “talking down to black people.”

Obama confirmed that Jackson’s feelings were well known to him before the tape was released –- communicated to him from Jackson himself.

“I had spoken to him before, a few days before what he said was released," Obama said, "and we had actually discussed some of the concerns he had raised about my fatherhood speech.”

Obama said that he told Jackson be believes that there are structural inequalities in the country that have to be dealt with.

“My argument is simply that it’s not an 'either-or' proposition, it’s a 'both-and' proposition," Obama said. "The government and society as a whole has an obligation to deal with poverty, particularly poverty that’s deep-rooted not just in the inner cities, but in rural communities all across America.”

Obama said his conversation with Jackson was not met with a lot of open resistance on the other end of the phone.

“In my conversation, I think it would be hard for him to disagree with that since many of the things I have said are the things that he has said in the past,” Obama said.

The presumptive Democratic nominee has since accepted Jackson’s apology for his remarks, but confirmed they have not spoken since the controversial tapes of Jackson were released.

Is Obama pandering? Sure, but it doesn't mean what he says wasn't true. Obama is far from perfect but compared to Mccain is a beacon of consistency. Half of McCain's platform is a flipflop to pander to conservatives. Tax cuts, immigration, torture, he has consistently discarded his maverick identity to shore up the red neck vote.

Obama has a problem, He singles groups out, If he was a true american He would address the problem as an american problem not a black , white , hispanic problem.
The bottom line is there are so many children today living in single parent households.
I won't vote for either canadate.
Both sides of the aisle have created what we are experincing today.
They don't care about you. They have to protect their corporate lobbyist whores.
So we will bail out the elitists,Banks , Wall Street, gas and food prices will go thru the roof jobs will continue to be outscourced and insourced.
Get ready for the next Economic Depression.

The problem with the black community is that they use racism as a shield in order not to face their issues. They have had and still do have prejudices to deal with, but everything from the mishandling of Katrina to less jail time for crack has had a mass of excuse makers claiming its whitie trying to do them in. Name me one legitimate critism of blacks, you can't. It would be racist!

Thank you Katie, that's very kind - keep up the good fight but don't let yourself get dragged down by hate! Yes We Can!

The message is simple: if you're responsible for something as important as another human life, then take responsibility for it. be a parent. don't run away.

my addition to that message: if you're not ready to be a parent, then use a condom or some kind of birth control. if you're not ready to be a parent and you get pregnant, get an abortion.

BO's problem is that he has a habit of talking down not only to the Black community but to the public in general. He is arrogant enough to believe his own publicity.

Although, Obama's message is sincere, he is out of touch because he is unable to see the complete picture as to why there are so many fatherless homes in the black community. Black communities have become a target and easy prey for police to meet their quotas for arrests or writing tickets. If a segment of society's male population are easily targeted for incarcerations then that will automatically equate to less fathers being allowed to be in the home to take an active part in raising their children. The greatest problems in the black community has come about primarily due to blacks have allowed anyone and everyone to come into their communities on the pretense of solving their problems. But instead, many came in and made fixable situations worse. They came in for what they could get out of it. As long as blacks continue to invite others in to solve their problems the problems will always be there and will only worsen. It's the same as America invading and savagely occupying some countries, the living conditions for the people they were suppose to be liberating has only deteriorated even more. Many of these people are not there in the black communities to help. They are there for their own personal gains. A cop in a black neighborhood can perform about two hours or less of work then go spend the rest of his shift at his mistess house or at some convenient store flirting with the store clerks. Or drinking away with his buddies.

Obama will do and say anything to become president, even throw his white grandmother under the bus.. oh wait he already did that.

He is just another slimy, corrupt politician from chicago. His lies are the same lies politicians have be telling since the beginning of time.

The only suprising thing is how many people are stupid enough to actually believe Obama's tripe.

Since the majority of unwed mothers in this country are white ... why doesn't Obama talk about the boys/men who are not taking care of these children? ... guess there are no votes to be gained in that.
-----------------
It's the percentage he's talking about; he obviously isn't suggesting the number is higher in total numbers. Blacks are a smaller percentage of the U.S. population than whites. This isn't outside of what he normally advocates, which is a call for personal responsibility. He was addressing this particular issue in the black community, but he has always advocated for personal responsibility, and that includes the responsibility of parents to their children.

The cold hard fact is that it was the Clintons of Arkansas who injected race into this campaign in the first place.
And the uglier fact is it was Clinton's welfare, VAWA & child support "reforms" that institutionalized the marginalization of fathers & not just in families of color.

"Since the majority of unwed mothers in this country are white ... why doesn't Obama talk about the boys/men who are not taking care of these children? ... guess there are no votes to be gained in that."

IT WOULD BE MORE FAIR TO SEE WHAT PERCENTAGE OF BLACK MOMS ARE UNWED VS. WHAT PERCENTAGE OF WHITE MOMS ARE UNWED.

Asia2pa, you are excatly right. I dont think there is a problem with the message, but BO's arrogance makes it look like he talks down on everyone who's not ivy league educated, but us black folks shouldnt dispair he thinks rural white folks are bitter and cling to their guns and religon, so we are not along in earning Bo's contempt.

Vanessa what electoral map are you looking at? I have not seen one where Senator Obama or Senator McCain have the required 270 electoral voted needed to be the next President. May I suggest you re-check your sources. I would also suggest that you quit watching the Obama channel "MSNBC" too. The MSNBC does not report the news they report the postive news for Senator Obama for the day.

Nando: Is that true? Did McCain really say that?

Maybe giving someone different a shot at running this great country of ours is A GOOD IDEA. We seem to be headed in the wrong direction for a while now.

I don't understand why we have to discuss the race of a good or a bad father. This nation desperately needs involved, responsible fathers from every race. Honestly, most of us are mixed race at some level anyway. What's the big deal?
By the way, I am a "white" 40-something middle class mom, raised in the deep South. I'm tired of this race mess. Get over it, kids.
