Protesters Interrupt Bush Holiday Speech
July 04, 2008 2:52 PM
ABC's Matthew Jaffe reports: Protesters today repeatedly interrupted President Bush's Fourth of July speech at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's residence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
No sooner had Bush started speaking at the naturalization ceremony welcoming new American citizens than protesters began shouting at him, calling him a "war criminal."
The President paused in his remarks and then responded, "To my fellow citizens, we believe in free speech in the United States of America."
One woman moved towards the stage before being stopped by security, but other protesters still made their voices heard.
Only minutes later, another protester shouted expletives at the President, while still another called Bush "a fascist".
By the time Bush finished his 10-minute remarks, at least nine protesters had been escorted out of the event by law enforcement.
Although Bush did not mention the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in his final Fourth of July speech as President, he did thank the troops, while paying tribute to the author of the Declaration of Independence, who died on this day in 1826.
"We honor Jefferson's legacy by aiding the rise of liberty in lands that do not know the blessings of freedom," Bush said. "And on this Fourth of July we pay tribute to the brave men and women who wear the uniform of the United States of America," prompting a standing ovation from the assembled crowd.
Bush congratulated the new citizens participating in the naturalization ceremony, more than 70 men and women from about 35 different countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Norway, and Burma.
"From this day forward the history of the United States will be part of your heritage, the Fourth of July will be part of your Independence Day, and I will be honored to call you a fellow American," said the President.
While in Charlottesville, Bush toured Monticello with Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, a Democrat. Early in the afternoon, Bush returned to the White House to celebrate Independence Day, a holiday which falls right at the start of his birthday weekend.
"Thomas Jefferson once said he'd rather celebrate the Fourth of July than his own birthday," said Bush, who turns 62 on Sunday. "To me it's pretty simple, the Fourth of July weekend is my birthday weekend."
Protesters also lined the President's motorcade route, chanting "Arrest Bush" as he drove to and from the Monticello ceremony.

Only when Bush and his band of traitors are gone can this country begin to emerge from her period of national shame. We owe the world an apology, pure and simple. I love my country always, but I'll be MOST proud of her on the day we have the grace to offer that apology.

Hey - I don't got a degree at Phoenix University .. offline. I'm a noneducable Bush supporter.

Nice Robert, lower yourself lower than dirt, steal my name and type garbage. For a person who claims to have education seems to act as if he has none.

ok so im confused. Its not ok for these freedom of speach people to protest there? But it is ok for protesters for abortion to have huge posterboard size pictures of aborted fetus's and to protest outside of our junior high schools and down the main streets in town to make sure all children can see a sight as gory as this??? What I get from this is that it is ok for bush to have the privacy to give his speech, but it is not alright for our children to have the same privacy given to them when they go to school or even walking to a store or friends!! if our children cannot be protected than our president has no right wanting to be!

Just kidding guys, I agree that Bush should be in prison, and I must admit that I do not spell so well, but I try, do you guys like me? I just wanted to impress you all, I'm terribly sorry, I won't right anynmore stoopidity

How often do conservatives interrupt others from giving prepared speeches? These guys are just DIRTBAGS!!!

If you do not like what bush did then write up a piece of paper and go down to the Fed court building and file a lawsuit. Otherwise please sit down and allow him to speak.
I belive OBAMA will be far worst than Bush every was. McCain is not Bush. He is his own man. He speaks his own mind. OBAMA reads from teleprompters what other people write. He is not his own man. He has sold his soul for money and votes.
The only change we will see is Black Liberation Theology. Look up on the internet all about the God of Black Liberation Theology and if you are white you will never vote for OBAMA.

Robert, did your mommy do your homework for you online too???? I got my education from USIU and studied in England body. I have degree in Foreign Diplomacy. And get this, I am a first generation American whose family is from Albania that LOVES AMERICA MORE THAN YOU!!! You never experienced war, you are not man enough to go and experience it. Obama, only 3 years of politics is going to question McCain's military background? How disrespectful is that.

Watch Out - You think Obama is a secret Muslim and supports sharia law? Really? I mean, do you Reaaaally think that? Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary? Use your common sense. Object to him on some premise that is at least not completely laughable. By the way, someone asked Ghandi once what he thought of "Western Civilization." Ghandi thought for a moment and replied, "I'm for it."

Robert, refrain from discussing anything with me as I see you are not adult enough to have decent conversation. Thanks

Hey DemocratNoMore2,
allowing that liar to speak has gotten us into this mess, so how about we let those brave Americans speak up and help us get out of the Bush fiasco? It takes standing up and telling the President that he and his cronies are liars and a criminals, it got this discussion going, it got the truth out, and besides that it allowed Jefferson to stop rolling in his grave. He would have yelled the same things, in anger, at what Bush has done to the noble constitution he wrote for us, they raped it, and need to hear about it...

That's the protester's rights in this nation which is what we're celebrating today. However, if the tables were turned - as they are on many college campuses around the nation, I doubt that those on the left would be as accommodating. There motto might be "My rights are sacred (freedom of speech, etc.), but where I'm from you don't have any rights that I need to honor!" E Pluribus Unum everyone!

I can't wait till all the old-hippies from the left croak and turn back into dust. Scumbags should have been aborted during the boom.

We are a country of laws and a country
with a just constitution that all past
Presidents have honored, Why allow
this man to alter and disobey the very
laws that have kept us from being ruled
by a Monarchy or Dictatorship in the
first place? Show the World we are still
a place of laws and put him in Jail, at
least a day for every American that has
died for a made-up war.

People should be protesting about their jobs and gas prices.

bush should not be allowed to step on our sacred historical grounds and speak like he cares about america. because since he has been president he has done all he can to tear down the very fabric of what our founding fathers built.everyone of our founding fathers would start a new revolution to dethrone king george again.

I read recently that a sewerage plant in SAN FRANCISCO was being named after him, how very appropriate. Now we know what Bush's first name initial,G, really stands for>>>GARBARGE..WHICH IS EVERY THING HE SAYS AND DOES.
The 'George(AKA garbarge) dump AKA THE White House Think We should change location of the 'White House' and give it new fresh start come Jan. 09 The location now stinks so bad it would be hard to live and do the business of America there, and it does'nt have any windows do to lack of vision.
