Subliminal Messaging, or Over-Active Imaginations?

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: There's a longtime tradition in political advertising to look beyond the message to the subtext -- and even to the subliminal.

In that spirit, a veteran Democratic operative offers an interesting observation of the newly released anti-Obama Web video produced by the McCain campaign. The video is an eight-minute montage of sometimes contradictory statements about the Iraq war made by Sen. Barack Obama.

Abc_john_mccain_ad_gfx_080717_11 At the very beginning, the title -- “The Obama Iraq Documentary” -- flashes into place in a blaze of orange. And for a single frame -- a tiny fraction of a second -- Obama’s face is framed by the following prominent letters: “a l  q D.”

Some caveats: “al qD” is meaningless by itself. The “l” is actually the capital “I” in "Iraq," though in the typeface used in the video, it looks like a lowercase “L.” Other letters -- at either end of the title -- are simultaneously on the screen. And many editing programs do allow randomized letter placement.

But still. . . . For a brief moment, Obama’s face is framed by letters that the brain may want to play with and spell something that does make sense. If you type “al qD” into Google, you get this response: “Did you mean: al qaeda.”

Well -- is that what the McCain campaign meant?

No, said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers, adding that the admakers used a “text randomizer,” where a computer randomly chose the order in which the letters would appear.

“The idea that it’s in any way done by the campaign intentionally is preposterous,” Rogers said when asked by ABC News whether the campaign meant to draw a link between Obama and al Qaeda.

Rogers added that tens of thousands of people have viewed the video since it was released Thursday afternoon, and no one had asked the campaign about the letters in the beginning of the ad before ABC was in touch.

“It’s so subliminal, even when it’s freeze-framed, it’s incomprehensible,” Rogers said. “We didn’t freeze-frame every frame in an eight-minute video to trouble shoot what liberal-bloggers might attack us for.”

The video was produced by McCain’s ad team, FoxHole Productions. A McCain aide told ABC that it was primarily put together by an editor who had about 48 hours to throw it together in advance of Obama’s foreign trip.

Still, in this era of hyper-analysis -- and in the very week that a non-subtle New Yorker cover was blasted as beyond the bounds of satire -- should something like this have slipped by Team McCain?

As the veteran Democrat notes, every frame of anything put out by a campaign is typically reviewed and triple-checked. This could be carelessness, a bad joke by a too-clever staffer, or inevitable given all the letter combinations that emerge from the immense quantity of video content produced by campaigns these days.

Matthew Dowd, a former strategist for President Bush who is now an ABC News consultant, said something like this should have been caught before it was sent out. He noted that campaigns need to be extra sensitive in the wake of the 2000 Republican National campaign ad attacking Al Gore that was revealed to feature a quick shot of the word “RATS.”

“Part of what you have to do in a campaign is prevent the unintentional problem -- and that’s a problem,” Dowd said of the McCain video. “We know what’s happened with this ever since 2000 -- it’s a problem to do that. It’s either a malpractice problem of somebody who did this, or it’s an oversight problem. I’m much more inclined to think it’s oversight.”

What do you think? An oversight? Meaningless? Or “RATS” part two?

Oh my sad little unanalytical puppies, you are getting a subliminal message every time our candidates stand in front of a podium with the flag behind them, or stand in the midst of our troops, or kiss a baby for pity's sake - what did you think that meant? That he/she loves that baby? No, it's supposed to make you feel that you can trust him/her with your most precious, most loved person in the world.

The flags means he/she's a legitimate leader. The troops as backdrop or all around them means commander-in-chief. It's Politics 101, and for anyone directing/editing the shortest film, it's Film 101.

There's a message beyond that spoken in every ad worth a dime - and with the millions they have to pay MSM to air those, you bet they're packed with symbolism - aka, subliminal messages. For pity's sake, "tin hat conspiracy theorists"? That's so 70's!

Now, be honest, look at that video, and tell me it doesn't make Obama look like Osama in one of his stupid egotistical sadistic video releases! Then think back on how your hero, McCain was treated by the very same people managing his campaign now, and tell me, was it fair or honest?

If you think that was not manipulative or dishonest, then sure, this is cool, no harm no foul. But I think it played to the most ignorant then, and does so again now. No diff. Except we're not electing another Bush, not this time!

Much to do about nothing. What the Obamanites object to is for anyone to see his changing stance on any issue and when they are pointed out he cries "personal attack".

Does this man have an ego or what?

The real message of the video is more important, more relevant, which delineates all of Obama's flip flops and contradictions on a very important issue. Let's not forget the big picture - the big story - here. BTW, it's okay for politicians to moderate their positions, but I think most people will be quite interested in seeing this video. This is not about moderating one's position...this is more like totally *changing* your position and completely contradicting yourself. Visit McCain's web site yourself, and you can view it on the front page. Obama has a credibility problem with a lot of people...he speaks rather carelessly.

The hyper-sensitive Obama supporters (including much of the media) are out in force again. Why don't you stick to "any criticism of Obama is racist", instead of whining over supposed subliminal messages in ads? Oh, I know - it's a way to attempt to distract voters from the reality that Obama is an empty suit.

What do I as a common person think? I think that it's a slow news day for the media.

Amerpundit got it right. Everyone is missing the message of the ad, which is what ABC wants.

Obama and his followers cry wolf on everything - including stupid ads. I've never seen a Presidential candidate as whiney as Obama who seems to stomp his feet and cry every time someone questions his credibility or decision making. This man wants to be POTUS and cannot make it through the election without crying foul every other day for something? Yea, exactly the kind of President we need to go face-to-face with Iran and North Korea. Will he cry when they ridicule him too?

Sorry, this guy needs to grow # ### before anyone will take him seriously. He can't even handle the heat of campaigning let alone the Presidency.

Why don't you people try voting on policy rather than celebrity factor of your leaders?

After reading through the above posts, I see the masterminds plan is working. We are so divided, so consumed with fighting with each other that we lose focus that our government--BOTH parties--are selling us out. Come on people. Wake up.

This is more of the same "somebody is pulling the race card", or whatever, on me. Poor me. This is just a distraction to keep viewers from seeing all the double-talk on Iraq. We are busy waiting for the new "refine" message. What a rule to live by. If we could all "refine" what we said, our words would never get us in trouble. Obama has run his entire campaign with his easy rule. Play this ad over and over til you completely see who is really is.

Everyone is behind obama even bush has jumped on the band wagon and is now setting a time table for troop withdraw everything that obama comes up with that people and leaders around the globe love bush jumps in and does it to make it look like hes the one that came up with it and makes it happen hopefully this electikon the people of the US arent so stupid to let GOP fear and lies scare them into voting them in another 4 years

who needs fever pits of lefty paranoia like dailykos and democraticunderground to come up with "rubber turkey" conspiracy theories when you have ABC,NBC and CBS?

Posted by: jummy | Jul 20, 2008 8:46:45 AM

Big deal - every ad is manipulation. Television itself is "spin", PR, entertainment, information control and propaganda.

It is sad to see my beloved American people so malluable to suggestion. We are a land of repeaters and spend no time of our own in critical thought. I suppose it is the effects of demoralization.

I took a close look because, all three branches, both parties and the media have failed the American people. This time I'm choosing who I think is best!

I'm looking at everything - how did they vote, who are their advisors, what bills did they introduce and who is financing the campaign. I could careless about the mindless unify before the party - I'll unify for what I think is best for tomorrow and the next generation.

"I am not understanding why Obama is dropping like a rock in the POLLS"

He's not. The fact that Obama is ahead in places like MONTANA (a state which by all rights should be an absolute lock for McCain) shows us that Duyba 2.0 is toast.

To J.R.

You said: "Republicans play to the worse in society. Fear, innuendo, distortion, and outright lies."

The real truth is it's the democrats doing just that with the Global Warming Scare, "the world is ending in 120 months"; Bush lied, when democrats agreed to go to war based on the same CIA information; the republicans are going to take away your social security and starve the children...all a big lot of emotional hysteria.

You can't see the truth that's staring you in the face, but you believe in some crazy far-fetched lunacy that you see something subliminal in the title of this video. Guess that makes it easier not to address the truth that can be actually "seen" the video about Obama himself.

The candidate of the elites thinks we have 57 states (there ARE 57 islamic states by the way) and that he will serve as president for 8 or 10 years.

It takes a brain as well as a heart, and people aren't as dumb as you elitist Dems believe. Check the polls if you doubt it.

"The video is an eight-minute montage of sometimes contradictory statements about the Iraq war made by Sen. Barack Obama."

How hard would it be for ABC blog machine to focus on the real issue of this ad? "sometimes contradictory"...you've got to be kidding?

Obama is a joke - a man with no experience and a pattern of saying ANYTHING to any audience to get elected and be on the right (sometimes left) side of every issue.

The Republicans hope to lure in low information voters with their feargasms.

Posted by: Truth Matters | Jul 21, 2008 12:02:46 PM

Good grief.

What about the real subliminal message Obama sent female reporters traveling to the Middle East to cover his Messiah World Tour? By telling professional women who do not, technically, work for him (even if they are in the tank and doing his bidding for free) how to dress and behave, isn't he saying women aren't intelligent enough to figure this out for themselves?

Talk about patronizing paternalism!

I'd like to hear from graphic designers about the likelihood of this "text randomizer" randomly populating these letters! And no one catching it.
