The Note: Another McCain Comeback?
July 03, 2008 7:58 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein Reports in Thursday's Note: Here comes the McCain comeback -- again.
A bulldog is in place, outside help is on the way, and the candidate is even coming back to the country on his new plane(action-hero style -- along with some hostages).
Suddenly, Sen. John McCain is catching some breaks.
And so the new narrative is primed and in place (and it’s the same as an old narrative): McCain could actually do this thing. (Actually, while the polls remain tight, right now he’d settle for not being counted out -- but he’ll take what he can get.)
Maybe the start of his Colombia trip (and that’s with two “Os”) -- when McCain left U.S. soil, with its sputtering economy and spiraling gas prices, and declared war on drugs like it was 1984 -- will be remembered like the house-cleaning of almost exactly a year ago: When the campaign hit bottom.
Read the rest of The Note -- and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day -- from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.
McCain is writing the latest script with Steve Schmidt, who brings discipline, decisiveness, and determination to his new role -- and most importantly, the perception of all three qualities for the journalists and GOP insiders who were almost ready to give up on McCain.
No more silly backdrops, whiffed opportunities, and bad travel decisions; instead, a taste of the Bush/Arnold swagger for the final four-month stretch. (And Schmidt will move soon to kill off the regional campaign structure that Rick Davis put in place for the campaign -- a recipe for the type of muddled messaging Schmidt exists on this earth to eliminate.)
“This guy has the manner of a drill sergeant,” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos said on “Good Morning America” Thursday. “He is a tough task-master. If anybody can bring coherence to the McCain campaign, it’s Steve Schmidt.”
“The Sergeant has been promoted,” Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen write for Politico. “Schmidt, who had just recently returned full-time to the headquarters after spending most of his time with McCain on the road or with his family in California, responded [to the promotion] by exhorting campaign aides with a speech that one staffer likened to a locker room pep talk out of the football movie, ‘Rudy.’ ”

McCain is Bush's third term.
STILL NOT GOOD NEWS.

Mccain and bush is a shame. You know I was very paticular why Mccain was visiting Mexico and Columbia at this time. Now I have realised that it was all staged by Bush. CIA and the FBI were in charge of the operation. Mccain was there at bush's asking. The fact that he was briefed says it all. Its really a shame when a national situation is being used to boost a candidate.

Why is he being given some credit for the rescues? He had nothing to do with them, he just happend to be in the country when it happend. He didn't even know about it until he was on his new plane heading for Columbia.

McCain doesn't need a comeback, he's going to win hands down. This article is further evidence of a concerted effort by the Obamainstream media (ABC) to propogandize Obama's so called 'popularity' by using reverse logic. By saying that he's 'back up' implies that he was down to begin with. This election won't even be close. I'm not sure who, where or when they conduct these 'voter preference' surveys but how can polling land-line phone users (most probably near large cities) be an accurate representation of the national polls? For every pro-Obama comment in the multitude of blog comments I read, there are 10 negatives. Based on my own poll I'd guess Obama's outpolled nationally by 90%, right? Or does that poll only apply to Web users? Or is my poll propoganda?

dems for mccain: Then I guess you would agree that McCain's big push for the town-hall meetings would also be premature...

Whenever polls show a close race or even the repub being down by a few, that is bad news for the dems. Democrats almost ALWAYS overstate their support. This country is right of center. That fact hasn't changed. Liberals continue to choose really liberal candidates, have them do a dance to the center, which looks phony, then they lose narrowly. While Obama has a better shot perhaps than Dukakis or Kerry, his support is still overstated. The media, their polls, their blogs and their propaganda does not represent mainstream america. Democrats forget this EVERY SINGLE ELECTION.

Will: This was no coincidence. The White House provided funding and intelligence to the Colombian government to assist with the rescue. If, for a moment, you don't believe that McCain was briefed in advance -- thus leading to this trip in the first place -- then you're just not paying attention.

Let's not forget what mades these comebacks necessary. McCain's team can't manage a campaign. His first collapse made Clinton's team look like management professors in a school offering MBAs.
And let's not forget what made McCain's first comeback possible. A very weak field of contenders for GOP nomination. If any of them had caught fire, a broke guy relegated to affording nothing more than townhall appearances in one New Hampshire town after another never would have made it.
Will Obama give him the same opportunity? Jury is out, of course, but for some reason I doubt it.
Posted by: Paul | Jul 3, 2008 1:39:25 PM
Paul... Another key factor in what made McCain's first comback possible: he sold his soul to the Bush administration.
By reversing (flip-flopping?) his stand on multiple issues, he agreed to adopt the Bush policy file as his own... and, as a result, gained the support of the Bush administration and the die-hard Big Oil & Big Corporate types.
After building a career as a self-proclaimed 'maverick'... McCain agreed to bend over and take it for the team.

GW Bush - a real sock puppet

McCain v. Obama
Tortoise v. Hare?
From most anti-McCain comments here, the underestimation is acute, especially considering the guy has to follow Bush (unpopular, to say the least), and has had a spotty campaign with lacking funds, has not been a strong speechmaker, must contend with Obama-centric press, yet is still polling about 5 points away from the leader.
He might lose, I dunno, but I think counting him out at this early stage is wishful thinking and hubris.

Tammy, Obama didn't rip off Hillary for the Dem nomination. It was her own incredible incompetence to run a campaign that did it.

"If, for a moment, you don't believe that McCain was briefed in advance -- thus leading to this trip in the first place -- then you're just not paying attention."
Exactly, Champ. Nice way to link him with the hostage release. Notice that Jeb Bush got in on that action, too.

John McCain shows what experience and wisdom really do for a candidate. Foreign relations are extremely important for security and trade relations. Why should our neighbors in the southern hemisphere not be engaged with us? The fact that McCain was there at the time of such a dramatic rescue is mere coincidence. What if the rescue attempt had failed? Would he then have been blamed for its failure? John McCain shows his stature, his experience, and his stability, no matter where he is. He has been molded by his heroic life experiences, his service to his country, and his valuable service in the Senate for both economic and foreign and military matters. Unlike Obama, he is not a novice. He is ready now!

Good job John. This couldn't come at a better time. It's time to pull Latin America closer and if this raid is part of it, right on. It's high time we pull business from China and start sending it to South America. We have created our own demise by supporting the build up of China and now we have another competitor for global resources. Lets shift the focus to the Americas if we won't do it here in the US. I think that's wrong and support Made in the USA but scales of economy seem to point our focus outside the US.
I find myself wanting to bash every democrat and liberal but I need to be more tolerant. I just have a hard time supporting another attorney with no military experience becoming president. How can any candidate even consider becoming president without serving in the military? JFK was one of the most loved Presidents but even with his military background he still had initial problems during his presidency. Just shows that even with service to country mistakes will arise. No one is perfect but his history in the service helped to bring things around. If you want to lable me as a warmonger then bring it on. I'm not promoting war...just American and world stabilty. If we weren't at the helm making the world safer in many areas then who would? China...Russia?
McCain has areas that I don't agree with but when it comes down to it I think he is the candidate to keep America safe. I also think he is bucking the Republican party enough to make changes in the ranks. Never thought of myself as a Democrat or Republican before but I guess 20 years in the Navy kinda changed things. Maybe that's part of it too. I'm biased, GO Navy! Just jokin around. I'm very proud of all our serivce members.
SO why did John go to Colombia during our nations holiday? Read this. Happy 4th of July.
