Casey Tapped for Dem Convention
August 13, 2008 12:39 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Arnab Datta report: Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., an abortion rights opponent who endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY prior to the Pennsylvania primary, will address the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Casey's father, the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Casey D-Pa., was denied a speaking spot at the 1992 convention. The Casey family has long viewed the '92 denial as stemming from his opposition to abortion rights.
Over the years, the perceived 1992 snub has become a symbol for Democratic critics who want to alter the party's staunch support for abortion rights.
In 2004, Republicans contrasted the Casey snub with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-NY., two Republicans who support abortion rights, speaking to their convention.
Mindful of the perception surrounding the 1992 convention, the decision to give Sen. Casey a featured speaking spot is part of a broader effort on the part of the Democrats to broaden the party's appeal on abortion.
While the party platform includes a sweeping pledge to oppose "any and all efforts" to weaken or undermine a "woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion," Democrats consulted with the Rev. Jim Wallis and others on how to include language in the platform which would signal the party's commitment to reducing the incidence of abortion.
The Democratic platform adopted this past Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa., pledges pre- and post-natal health care, income support, and adoption programs to support those women who make the decision to have a child.
"The language in the platform is a real step forward," said Wallis on a Tuesday conference call with reporters. "For those women who want to take the child to term, it strongly supports that choice, and provides necessary support."
The Democratic platform was also praised on Tuesday's call by Pepperdine Law Prof. Douglas Kmiec. Kmiec, an Obama supporter who served as constitutional legal counsel to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush , called the platform an "historic moment that does a lot for Democrats, Catholics, and women."
While praising the platform's direction, Kmiec said that he concurred with Kristen Day, the executive director of "Democrats for Life," that the platform should not include a reference to the "need" for abortion.
"I would concur with Kristen that 'need' is language that Catholics would not have included in the platform, and I hope that somebody does raise taking it out, because I don't think it's needed," said Kmiec.
Here is the Democratic Party's Platform Language on "Choice":
"The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right."
"The Democratic Party also strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education which empowers people to make informed choices and live healthy lives. We also recognize that such health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions."
"The Democratic Party also strongly supports a woman's decision to have a child by ensuring access to and availability of programs for pre- and post-natal health care, parenting skills, income support, and caring adoption programs."

No, Bob Casey Sr. wasn't allowed to speak before the convention in 1992 because he wouldn't support the ticket.

Bob casey? More change huh.

Bob Casey should be ashamed. His father was one of Pennsylvania's greatest protectors of innocent human life. Casey Jr. is now supporting a man who has voted to even allow abortion survivors to die. Obama's position is so extreme, he makes Hillary and Kennedy seem conservative.

how do we get a press corps that doesn't propel lies and propaganda and instead will seek the evidence to back up what they read from the rnc talking points.
the casey lie has been debunked repeatedly -- but it's never reported by the corporate media, because it dispels one of their favorite myths about democrats.

Do the people that cover politics for ABC even follow politics?
There were several other speakers at that '92 convention who held anti-choice stands. Casey's problem was that he didn't support the nominee!
I mean - come on already! Give it a rest with the Republican talking points.
And to the previous poster : abortion survivors? You've been fed a line of cr*p.

Casey’s father was not “denied a prime speaking spot at the 1992 convention because of his opposition to abortion rights,” was not “snubbed,” and there’s been no “litmus test.”
This is a myth, that’s been repeated ad nauseum, but is nevertheless false and has been debunked many times. The truth is, Casey Sr. was denied a speaking spot because he refused to endorse the party’s nominee (Bill Clinton). At the same ‘92 convention, five governors, two senators, and a mayor — all of whom are pro-life — did get speaking spots, disproving the notion that there was a “litmus test.” (What’s more, pro-life speakers have been featured at every Democratic convention since.)

Dear skylab: RE: "abortion survivors? You've been fed a line of cr*p." It's time to come back to earth; during certain late-term abortions, the unborn child has occasionally survived, and when this happens, the abortion providers usually leave these often-healthy newborns in closets to die quietly. Please stop flying around in the vaccuum outer political correctness long enough to do a little research before posting.

I have a feeling that if we researched at the same places you do George we would all be less informed than before we started.

Proof for the unbelievers:
A Tall Tale Uncovered on the Campaign Trail
For all of his stirring speeches, even Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) can't talk himself out of the controversy that's emerged over his position on the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA). The legislation, which protects newborns who survive an abortion from infanticide, became a federal law in 2002. In Illinois, Obama actively opposed an identical piece of legislation as a committee chairman, stating later that he would have endorsed it had the bill contained the same language as the federal version. When it surfaced that he voted against the BAIPA, Obama lied in several interviews, including this one with Chicago Tribune in 2004 in which he told reporters that "had he been in the
U.S. Senate two years ago, he would have voted for the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act." This week, the National Right to Life Committee uncovered new documents proving that the Illinois version of the Act was taken verbatim from the congressional bill, which means that the man running for
president has been lying about his position on the issue for six years. The deception continues on his website, where a June 30 "fact check" claims that the Illinois and federal bills "did not contain . . . exactly the same language." Is it any surprise that a man who referred to babies as a "punishment" would vote for the killing of innocent children who survive abortions? As David Limbaugh writes in yesterday's column, "Are pro-life Obama supporters so selfishly hooked on a feeling... that they'll back Obama and his party in the most immoral crusade since slavery? It appears so."

Thank you for including language that reflects it was the Casey family's PERCEPTION that the snub was about abortion. . .as others have commented, reality suggests otherwise. Casey did not endorse Clinton.

I switched my voter registration from Democrat to Republican in 1992 when Gov. Bob Casey was not allowed to speak at the Democratic Convention. I have not voted for a Democrat for president since Jimmy Carter's first race until 2004, because of the Iraq war. Democrats need to welcome pro-life voters into the party, if they don't want to continue to loose presidential elections, and control of Congress.
I am glad Bob Casey, Jr. is allowed to speak at the convention this year. There are millions of pro-life demmmocrats(mostly roman catholics) who would return to the democratic party. T
