Deal: Clinton's Name Will Be Placed in Nomination at Dems Convention
August 14, 2008 11:09 AM
ABC News' Kate Snow reports: A deal has been brokered between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that will allow Clinton's name to be placed in nomination at next week's Democratic nominating convention, sources close to the Clinton camp told ABC News.
"Both sides agree that it is in the best interest of party unity and making sure that everyone's voice and vote is honored to make sure her name is put into nomination," a person close the negotiations said. "It's to honor everyone who worked so hard on both sides."
The two sides have been jockeying over how to win over Clinton supporters who were bitterly disappointed by her loss and the chance of seeing the first woman to win the presidential nomination of a major political party.
It is also apparent that Clinton is not being seriously considered as a running mate for Obama.
The deal that allows Clinton's name to be placed in nomination is meant to help mollify those hurt feelings.
“I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion,” Obama said in a joint statement released by the press offices of both senators.
The statement said Obama's office "encouraged" Clinton's supporters to place her name in nomination. Nevertheless, it has taken weeks for today's agreement to be reached.
The joint statement quoted Clinton saying, “With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again.”
Some details are still being worked out, but Clinton's name will be put into nomination at the Denver convention on Wednesday. That will be one day after Clinton addresses the convention.
"This truly was a joint decision," according to the Clinton source. "This wasn't something she was itching for, looking for. But so many of her supporters said it was important to them. And the Obama people got how important it was to smooth over any tensions and that it was the right thing to do."
What also hasn't been settled yet is who will nominate Clinton and whether she will stand up with the New York delegation when they are called on.
What has been settled, however, is that after both Clinton and Obama names are placed into nomination there will be a roll call vote.
What has also been hashed out is that at some point during the convention, Clinton will release her delegates officialy to Obama and that she will make it very clear that she is voting for Obama, the source said.
One more thing...
As of last night, there are still no decisions on whether Chelsea Clinton will speak at the convention, although a Clinton source said, "I wouldn't be surprised if she did" introduce her mother.
That would make the convention a true family affair with Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Clinton all having podium time.

its obvious to anyone who truly cares about their children that only Senator Clinton is capable of being the best President for them right now.....such hatred and disrespect for her and her supporters is only meant to disguise guilt over having compromised the best interests of those they love by supporting a lesser candidate (mccain/obama) to take on such overwhelming responsibilities and problems

Way to go, Hillary! We want YOU as our Democratic nominee! NoBama!

I am a Republican exicted at the opportunity to vote for Obama......the horrific idea of having Hillary on the ballot is making me think twice about the Democratic Party....not a good decision to put someone as DIVISIVE as Hillary on the ballot.....keep it simple and let us vote for Obama and change....not the same 'ol same 'ol of McCain and Clinton

She will not be stealing anything. Obama has not been named the Nominee, ONLY the presumptive Nominee. I hope that all of the things he has said and done, has now backfired on him. The only way he had a chance was for him to pick Hilary as his vp. Either she said no or he was too bullhead to allow it. And I think by now that the person's that backed him before are now having second thoughts due to his actions lately. Hahahahahah. You go Hil! Your a very smart woman. I think that Obama even told the convention people that he wanted Michigan and Florida Deligates to now be able to vote. haha. Bye bye O.

I am not worried about Hillary, I honestly think she is doing everything she can to unify the party, but I am very concerned about her supporters. She needs to do more between the convention to convince her supporters that any kind of floor fight or disrespect of the nominee will not be tolerated.

jock59801 - Thanks for the clarification. I agree that allowing the delegates to vote for Clinton is a good idea.

Once again -no one has been nominated yet. The RULES require a vote.

obama can beat mccain if he were alone.....but he can't withstand the severe attack campaign headed his way courtesy of special interest groups not unlike the swift boat vets.....only Senator Clinton has shown the tenacity and perseverance to thrive under such hostile conditions and adversaries....obama is toast and his naive lemming supporters don't even see it coming....

I have always said that when Hillary merely "suspended" her campaign, that she had an alterior motive. I think we see that being played out. Obama could very well lose the nomination now!
Hillary 08!

Most of the time, political conventions are a complete waste of everyone's time and money. But THIS year, it could be different!
BOTH parties have selected the WRONG candidates (for different reasons). Hillary Clinton could beat ANY Republican candidate, but if the Dems stick with BHO, they COULD lose in November.
If the Republicans had chosen a stronger candidate, they could defeat Obama, but McCain will have a hard time, especially with the weak and reactionary campaign he is running.

I am a strong Obama supporter but this makes me wonder if he is too willing to placate bullies. This is no time, in the state of the world, to be weak. On the other hand, I don't want an old reactionary (male or female).

Clinton only cares about HERSELF and HER power...she is extremely greed in regards to her NEED for power and influence....this is just another example of Clinton's ME FIRST attitude and Democratic Party comes second.....its a shame she was able to pull the wool over the eyes of all the uneducated people and the women of the US......she doesn't care about you..she cares about HERSELF .....

This is a big mistake.

Anyone who really thinks Clinton is going to come away from this as the nominee has completely lost sense of reality. Unless some horrible skeleton comes out about Obama from now until then.
Also, it's not about following the rules.. it's typical for the candidate who end up on the short end to withdraw their name from the ballot.

maybe Clinton will get the nomination and the Bo could be her VP yeah thats the ticket.

Hillary couldn't even manage her own campaign staff. She is a horrible manager and is the most divisive and selfish person in the Senate. It's no wonder her unfavorable numbers are sky high. She disgusts me. I hope she gets booed at the convention.

I think Obama went way out on a limb on this one. Shows how much the Clinton's are addicted to power. Just can't let go here. who knows how this roll call vote would go. I don't favor either but this is nuts. Suppose there is a near tie on this vote. This could be very interesting. A night to remember for some or for the democrats, a night to forget.

Could our wildest dream actually come true????
Contact your delegates for Hillary...Make sure they vote for her! She could actually WIN!
Posted by: seethetruth | Aug 14, 2008 11:57:23 AM
Will, you are absolutely correct. I am one of those Hillary supporters/contributors who has already decided to vote for McCain, even though I don't like him very much.
Posted by: Rhys | Aug 14, 2008 11:57:27 AM
When is the losing party of 2009 actually the winner??? When the candidates are Obama and McCain..and we get to cast our vote again in four years..........
