Graham on Palin: 'Ready to Lead'
August 31, 2008 2:46 PM
ABC News' Ben Newman Reports: Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., made his case this morning that the Republican vice presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is ready to serve in the White House. “She's tough. She's talented. She's ready to lead,” said Graham.
In an exclusive interview with George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," Graham, a longtime friend and staunch supporter of presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain, backed the Arizona senator’s pick. “John McCain is trying to tell the American people I got it… I've picked somebody that knows how to fix government, I've picked somebody that will stand up to powerful people in her own backyard and together we’re going to change this place,” said Graham.
When questioned whether he would feel safe and confident with Palin as president, should something happen to McCain, Graham responded, “Compared to Barack Obama I think she would make one hell of a commander-in-chief.”
In a separate interview on "This Week," Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts disagreed, challenging Palin’s foreign policy credentials.
“[McCain’s] chosen somebody that has zero, zero experience in foreign policy," said Kerry. "The first threshold test of a president, of a nominee, is choosing a vice president, is to prove to the American people that the person that you have chosen can fill in tomorrow."
Kerry also suggested Palin was not qualified to take over office should tragedy strike McCain. “I'm sure she is a terrific person,” he said. “I'm not attacking her. I think John McCain's judgment is once again put at issue because he has chosen somebody who clearly does not meet the national security threshold, who is not ready to be president tomorrow.”
Graham claimed, however, that Palin's executive experience as governor trumps the experiences of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. “She's been a governor. She's been in charge of the National Guard. What has Senator Obama done in terms of managing a war? His judgment when it comes to matters of war had been terrible.
Contradicting suggestions that former supporters of Hillary Clinton, Obama's rival in the hard-fought Democratic primaries, will flock to the McCain-Palin ticket, Kerry claimed the policy differences between the two women makes it highly unlikely.
The people who supported Hillary Clinton are not going to be seduced just because John McCain has picked a woman," Kerry said. "They're going to look at what she supports. The fact that she doesn't even support the notion that climate change is manmade -- she's back there with the Flat Earth Caucus. I think it's almost insulting to the Hillary supporters that they believe they would support somebody who is against almost everything that they believe in.”

Governor Palin is a bone the RNC threw to a specific demographic. So be it - that's politics, cynical as usual. What all American women have to realize is what an extreme conservative she is on all issues. Family planning, for example: no contraception for married couples, for example. No abortion in the case of rape or incest. An informed choice - pro or con - is critical. Karl Rove''s statement that Senator Obama would make a political choice for VP was incorrect. It''s actually Senator McCain who made that choice and it is one that, by all acounts, he did not want. Senator Lieberman was his pick. The sad thing is that this demographic continually allows itself to be manipulated by the current clique in the Republican party.

Kathy, you mean you have played Affirmative Action well first, dissing a more qualified candidate who has won more votes because she is a woman and because she has more experience.
Now you are coming out in bunches, smearing another woman candidate.
You are the last bunch of blind followers who are qualified to question anyone putting politics first.

As a sucesful working & married mother of 3 I'm insulted by Mr McCain's choice for VP. He seems to think that just because he picks a woman, any woman for that matter, all women will vote for him.
He seems to think women are stupid or something?
Even worse, Sara knows it and even talks about it openly. I'm I the only one who is o troubled by it?
Mr McCain based his first executive decision on politics only, the good of the people or nation had nothing to do with his pick. come on, there had to be much better VP picks within the GP.
He didn't pick someone to help or counsel in case of international crisis or that could take office if something happens to the eldest elected president.
Mr McCain, i find your first executive decision reckless and sad.
Mr McCain, I can't vote for you now.

I laugh watching these Republicans defend McCain choice of VP.
If you think it's bad now imagine how much worse she will look when she has to face Biden.

LOL! All Governor Palin will have to do is stand there while Big Mouth Biden makes an a$$ of himself! Everyone knows how ridiculous he is, how he lies, how he plagurizes speeches, how he insults voters, etc....oopss....am I talking about Biden or NoBama...hmmm...they're so much alike, its hard to tell the difference these days!
However, Palin will rip Big Mouth Biden to shreds in a debate....only this time, his tears will be real, not fake....LOL!

She obviously can't counsel him in any government issue any time soon. Who will counsel McCain? That is a big question. Is it Lieberman? Cheney? Rove?

Vanessa,
Biden already lost; he opposed the Alaska pipeline 30 years ago, which pumps in 16 billion barrels of oil into this economy. If that hasn't existed, you would have been in deep you-know-what. This woman now is building a new pipeline across Alaska, making the oil companies to compromise in her terms.
Wait you political Jesus to sit down around a table to talk things over and see what His Nothingness can accomplish - nothingness.

Most Republican are conservative. That is why most Republicans love the Palin pick. B.O. and Biden are the #1 and the #3 most liberal senators in their party. Most independents are not that liberal. Palin is conservative but McCain is moderate. Sounds like a better mix than the B.O./Biden ticket.

Gina,

Very good way to put it! Biden will be toast in a debate...!
Posted by: david from texas | Aug 31, 2008 3:34:11 PM
I can't wait for the VP debate. Biden will talk non-stop until everyone falls asleep. Then when he runs out of something to say he will make up some lies. Kind of like he made up about his resume.
Meanwhile Palin will hit every topic with precision and skill.
Finally we have someone with credentials that comes from outside of D.C.

@0,
"A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School"
Elitist.
"He taught constitutional law"
He voted to give Bush the power to spy on you, taking your constitutional right away.
"a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress"
He literally spent 143 days in the Senate, spending 2.5 years running around to deceive voters and then accusing them poor, less-educated and bitter who only knows clinging to guns and God to release their anger.
"He also made OFFICIAL TRIPS to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa."
This made him a world class celebrity, which was in fact made possible after his opponent challenged him to take one trip. In Kenya, he found his half-brother living in poverty at $1 per month, yet he did nothing, abandoned him. Like father, like son; a true one of a kind and Dreams from his father.
"Energy Independence"
Not a single word of "nuclear" energy in his entire 60 page platform.

Linsey Graham is a fool...a RINO. This guy could not even impeach Clinton right...and libs actually listen to this bafoon. No wonder Laura Ingraham dumped him.

My concern is that McCain almost made it his campaign theme about Obama's 'young' age and that he was inexperienced and then McCain turns around and chooses someone to immediately step into the #1 role if something bad were to happen to him who is not only younger than Obama but no experience who he just met once??? Dose this mean that McCain is a hypocrite with questionable judgment or just a flat out liar - or both???
Posted by: rant3000 | Aug 31, 2008 3:46:32 PM
Can you imagine Biden and Palin debating on Foreign policy? LOL
It's almost unfair on Palin's part.
I'll bet anything right McCain deep inside regrets chosing Palin. He thought Palin being a women would overshadow how unqualified she is to be VP much less President.
McCain should have chosen Romney. Michigan would've been in play and if the Republican had taken Michigan it would be near impossible for the Dems to win. Oh well. I'm glad. McCain just made this race easier for Obama.
Obama/Biden08.
