How Palin Came to the Top of the List
August 29, 2008 3:08 PM
ABC's Jan Crawford Greenburg reports: It wasn't until Sunday night that John McCain, after meeting with his four top advisers, finally decided he could not tap independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut to be his running mate. One adviser, tasked with taking the temperature of the conservative base, had strongly made the case to McCain that it would be a disaster for the party and that the base would revolt. McCain concluded he could not go that route.
The next day, McCain studied the three men at the top of his shortlist: Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge. All had different strengths and negatives, but McCain was not satisfied. None of them had what McCain believed he needed to do -- and would have done -- with Lieberman.
McCain wanted to shake up the ticket.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's name was in the mix as an unconventional choice for months, but she had not been considered a front-runner. So, over the next few days, with McCain continuing to believe he needed someone who had more of a maverick streak than his other choices, lawyers reviewed her vetting information. They kept their activities from even some in McCain's most senior inner circle.
Pawlenty had been the youthful pick advisers believed would represent a fresh direction -- and one they could use to argue the Republican VP pick was more experienced than the Democratic presidential nominee. But Pawlenty's flaw -- what cost him the VP -- was that he would not have stirred things up. He was safe, and McCain was not inclined to take the safe route.
The campaign secretly flew Palin into Dayton last night. She and McCain met privately for a couple of hours. McCain concluded she would "shake up the system" and was "a maverick," qualities he believed Lieberman would have brought to the ticket. But she also would appeal to conservatives -- which Lieberman most certainly would not have done.
After their meeting, McCain concluded he was comfortable with his choice. He notified Pawlenty this morning that he was going in a different direction.

So in other words, it was another knee-jerk decision on McCain's part. Big surprise.
This is a guy who shots from the hip, and who has temperment issues. Bad combination.

Oops, shots should have been shoots.

Temperament.
He picks a woman under investigation for abuse of power by firing her ex brother in law because he divorced her sister. Vindictive, coupled with John McCain's temper... not a good thing.
And her Big Oil ties..
His pick says a lot about how he would run the country.

More pandering to the Hilliary crowd. 3rd party for me!

The Obamabots sound angry. On second thought, they just sound worried.

Super judgement there McCain. Made the decsion in a couple of hours, on his own. And went for someone that has not been vetted by anyone in the public sector. Please don't compare her experience to Obama's.. He has gobne through 2 years of public vetting and 26 debates. There is no comparison. Let's see judgement? Biden or Palin.. One breath away from the presidency.

Carrie - who sounds angry?
Or was that just one of those drive-by postings that really has nothing to do with anything posted before it?

Andrea said in another story, "In choosing Sarah Palin, McCain showed a willingness to make a bold move. In choosing Biden, Obama showed us a willingness to cut off his nose to spite his face." Couldnt' agree more. As one of the 10-12% hardcore Hillary supporters, I'm laughing out loud! John McCain, you're the man!!!!!!!

McCain’s choice of running mate is astounding on two levels. One, it’s extremely insulting to women that he thinks he can trot out a female and we will become so giddy that we’ll leap at the chance to get a woman —ANY woman— into the White House. I trust we’re smarter than that. Two, I’m appalled that the evangelicals and fundamentalists are such zealots about running our country their way that they are absolutely orgasmic over a candidate who is stupefyingly unqualified to step into the presidency. They are willing to sacrifice national security, the national economy, and national credibility for a right-to-life candidate. McCain is undeniably quite elderly and I cannot imagine Sarah Palin, who has briefly run a state with a population of Memphis, Tennessee, taking over leadership of a country with a population of more than 300,000,000 and a myriad of staggering problems. McCain has pandered to women and kissed the aspirations of the religious right. BAH!

Well the dem leaders have wasted no time in trying to beat down yet another woman. I have a feeling the republican party won't stand by and let that happen like the democratic party did. McCain will step up with a forceful "knock it off," quite the opposite of Obama's consenting silence when it was happing to Hillary.

"John McCain, you're the man!!!!!!!"
I'm offended by this sexist language! Lol, just kidding.

All he wants is the woman vote cares nothing about this nation,if he dies wowowowowow she is the pres.....Think about it people.Any one puts winning before the safety of all of us Americns iin my book is an a--hole....

This is a political move that has nothing to do with taking care of the economy, our foreign and domestic policies, nor any political issue that our country is now facing. For John McCain this is about winning votes. Its sad that the Gov. of Alaska has allowed herself to become a pawn in Mr. McCain’s little vote strategy. He has definately taken the one card he’s being playing repeatedly against Obama away. For the during of the campaing his accusations of inexperience and readiness to lead the nation is no longer viable.

Sarah Palin---Love it!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a democrat who will be voting Republican this year!

Exactly
this shows judgment
yeah good to go with your gut John...
3 of her 5 and a half years (really 4 and a half but whose counting) are as mayor of a town of 9000 people..
I was President of my student council and we had 5000 students...and President of my college student body we had 12.000 people...
can I be on the list?
Posted by: dl | Aug 29, 2008 3:37:10 PM
Great work John, you just wasted the next seven news cycles trying to explain/defend your v.p

I guess Palin really woke up Obama and his supporters. I guess all this time Obama thought he had already won the election... and the European trip was his self congratulatory trip.
There is a good chance Obama will have to pack up and move to Europe for good after November, after having spent so much money and gone nowhere.
Perhaps he'll take his speeches to Europe and find some new tricks there. Many losers here have found good names there. It's a good idea Mr. Obama rings up some of them and get their advice also.

Her executive experience makes her just as equal to Obama's experience. She actually has accomplishments to show for her years in office. She is just as ready to lead the country as Obama is. McCain hit a home run with this one.

beck: "I’m appalled that the evangelicals and fundamentalists are such zealots about running our country their way that they are absolutely orgasmic over a candidate..."
I'm not sure the orgasmic reaction has anything to do with her credentials or likelihood to govern in a way that appeals to evangelicals. I think she's a knockout.
And you can bet that aspect isn't lost on the McCain campaign. Like I was hinting at above, I'm not sure this pick was aimed at pleasing women as much as men.
Either way, its a terrible reason to pick a running mate. But she is easy on the eyes.

Katherine
so Putin comes in and ...does she break into her vast knowledge of govrnment histories...
her knowledge of our constitutiion of uN agreements
and when we are trying to negotiate China and India to back off on carbon...
becasue of global warming ...does she bring up her vast knowledge of trade agreements...
oh forget that she does not believe in global warming...
or when she is chasing down OBL to the gates of he!! is she going to keep her hair up like that?
c'mon it's not a sexist thing it's a "she is absolutely ill-equipped knowldege wise or other to be the leader of the free world" if heaven forbid the oh sooo unlikely case that a 72 year old who has had a cancer that reoccurs exponentially the more you have it and he has had it twice.
this is stupid...
