How Palin Came to the Top of the List
August 29, 2008 3:08 PM
ABC's Jan Crawford Greenburg reports: It wasn't until Sunday night that John McCain, after meeting with his four top advisers, finally decided he could not tap independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut to be his running mate. One adviser, tasked with taking the temperature of the conservative base, had strongly made the case to McCain that it would be a disaster for the party and that the base would revolt. McCain concluded he could not go that route.
The next day, McCain studied the three men at the top of his shortlist: Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge. All had different strengths and negatives, but McCain was not satisfied. None of them had what McCain believed he needed to do -- and would have done -- with Lieberman.
McCain wanted to shake up the ticket.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's name was in the mix as an unconventional choice for months, but she had not been considered a front-runner. So, over the next few days, with McCain continuing to believe he needed someone who had more of a maverick streak than his other choices, lawyers reviewed her vetting information. They kept their activities from even some in McCain's most senior inner circle.
Pawlenty had been the youthful pick advisers believed would represent a fresh direction -- and one they could use to argue the Republican VP pick was more experienced than the Democratic presidential nominee. But Pawlenty's flaw -- what cost him the VP -- was that he would not have stirred things up. He was safe, and McCain was not inclined to take the safe route.
The campaign secretly flew Palin into Dayton last night. She and McCain met privately for a couple of hours. McCain concluded she would "shake up the system" and was "a maverick," qualities he believed Lieberman would have brought to the ticket. But she also would appeal to conservatives -- which Lieberman most certainly would not have done.
After their meeting, McCain concluded he was comfortable with his choice. He notified Pawlenty this morning that he was going in a different direction.

John McCain chose Sarah Palin because he’s a man who knows how to make a bold decision. Barack Obama chose Joe Biden because Michelle told him not to choose Hillary. Thank you, Michelle!!!!!

Mccain dem
she has been governor less than these guys have all been running in primaries...
her executive experience is a joke.
a year...it took her half that time just to get up to speed.

Congrats to McCain - this is the funniest and smartest thing I have seen in years.
1) turn the dems argument about judgment/experience on their head -- if Palin is too inexperienced to be VP, how can Obama be Pres?
2) keep the conservative base from trickling away
3) create a pull for centrist women (Dem or Repub) who might have gone either way. ** All this talk about being demeaning to HRC supporters is short-sighted ... there are Repub/Indep women who's vote will make a difference this year
4) deliver what was promised - change and reform
5) get the media attention ... who's talking about Obama's acceptance speech now?
Clever clever clever

I have to say that every guy I know was like "yeah a woman"
are they going to vote for her...no.
not because she is a woman...because she is absolutely positively incredibly overwhelmingly ill equipped to be an aging heartbeat away from being the Leader of the free World...

I am so excited about voting for McCain/Palin 08. I can't take the smile off my face. I have to go look at it!

dl - you clearly think you know the intricacies of government/foreign relations since you're ALWAYS commenting on what's best, who's right, etc. Unless you have specialised training that makes you so expert, why should we think Palin can't know/think about these things too?

McSame has miscalculated this time as he miscalutated when during the early hours of the Vietname's war he was captured as POW and remained there until the end of that uggly war. This is a demonstration that McSame doesnot understand values women are fighting for. This choice is an anti-choice who will bring down all the fondamental women's aspirations for freedom and liberty. This is not a Hilary Clinton, this is not a Geraldine Ferraro, this is not a Nancy Policy, chosing Miss Alaska is just a demonstration of lack of judgement from McSame. God save America from McSame.

No one thinks Obama's knowledge that he has shown for a year and a half is even close to Palin
what they did was made obama look incredibly experienced... by picking Ms Wear my Glasses so I can look as smart as Hillary and Kay Bailey hutchinson.
McCain hates women like Kay Bailey Hutchinson etc...the only reason he likes this one...is BECAUSE she is anti woman...young and attractive.
and that is the truth.

Bud
I was not just picked to be an aging heart beat away from being the Leader of the Free World.
Palin was.... and shouldn't be.
...scary precipice Mccain wants to put us on playing tactical election stunts to get himself elected.

This is clearly an insult to women everywhere, and especially Hillary. What he's doing in effect is expecting all those who wanted Hillary as Obama's VP to come flocking to his side now. He's effectively saying that ANY woman will do, any woman can replace Hillary.

It took John McCain and the Republican Party to give Hillary and all her supporters the respect we all deserve.
Gov. Palin is not Hillary but she seems awesome and many of us will embrace her. My respect for John McCain just grows and grows. Tomorrow, as the newness of his pick begins to fade, the story will be how he - not BO - understood the depth of our hopes and dreams. For that, McCain has my vote.
McCain/Palin will be working with a solidly Democratic majority. No one has anything to worry about as far as Roe v. Wade or the Supreme Court is concerned. In fact, there's a lot to be said about having a Republican President in 2008 (if it can't be a centrist like Hillary). They will put the brakes on the more leftist leanings of Reid and Pelosi et. al.
This is a good day.

the sad thing is that the women on here saying they will vote for her on the ticket proves his point.
sad

McCain/Palin 08. The maverick did it again! Woohoo.
Posted by: Kitty | Aug 29, 2008 3:54:00 PM
Not only does it seem trite, it also looks like he's beholden to the party core and not to his own sense of what is right for the country.
If he really wanted Lieberman, he shoulda took Lieberman. What would the party do - vote Democrat?
If he wanted to the the "I'll pick a lady YEAH!", he could have chosen Condi Rice - noone could say she's inexperienced, even though she's about the same age as Obama.
Also, what's wrong with "Safe"? He's not picking someone for American Idol, he's picking someone to RUN THE UNITED STATES if something happens.
My respect for McCain's ability to chose the right path is diminishing day by day...

dl - Ah, the last refuge of the desparate, start with the personality attacks. Stick to facts you can prove (you're much better there).
* There are people who aren't impressed by Obama's knowledge and vision - it's not a universal truth that he's right. And, there are people open-minded enough to wait to see what Palin is like before jumping to conclusions.
* Women do wear glasses to see - especially those who have a busy life and don't have the patience to worry about contacts.
* Unless you're a close personal friend, you don't know who McCain likes (apart from Lieberman) or dislikes or why.
Think what you want, but don't expect everyone to believe it's gospel.

I am woman hear me roar. McCain/Palin 08. Yes, she can!!!
Posted by: Kitty | Aug 29, 2008 3:57:20 PM
Sarah Palin went after the unhappy Hillary voters today but last March said she could not vote for her because she did not like Hillary's whining. Hillary's experience is ten times what Palin's is.

s. valentis again
if you like being put one step below me...
it's great for you.
Palin is a trojen horse for women
My first job was working on the film "Boxing Helena" a film about a woman who has her legs and arms removed and put in a box who falls in love with the man who idnapped and did it to her.
It is completey a misogynistic and violent film toward women and the two producers (men) were self congratulatory when they were able to get a young female director, Jennifer Lynch who thought the freaky storyline was cool...to make it for them... because she had a famous director father ...
They got their really truly misogynistic film done...and used her as the way to sell it as something more than it was.
Palin is the Mccain's young female director.

I love the spin OBama people are giving Palin's selection - pointing out how Kay Bailey Hutchinson professes not to know her. Well, Hutchinson is in the Senate - just like the three men in this race. Why don't they ask one of the 49 other governors in the US about her. Our governors are the ones with executive experience - front lines, meeting daily challenges.
Also, what's the statistic? Mostly governors get elected to the White House - far fewer senators get elevated to the Presidency - and she's the vice presidential nominee. She looks like a fast learner.

Its just amazing how two-faced the Republicans can be. They critcize a man who has been a state and US senator who has shown very good judgement and can unify people. Yet they are ok with with some small town mayor who hasn't even come close to having any national experience or exposure. It must be genetic birthright for Republicans to follow the stupid, do what they are told without question and follow the same lame script.
