Invoking 9/11 Attacks, Conservative Group Links Obama to 70s Radical

Share

August 21, 2008 5:52 PM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: A conservative group called the American Issues Project will tonight begin running a TV ad in Ohio and Michigan highlighting Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., ties to Bill Ayres, a member of the 1970s radical group, Weather Underground.

Using images of the U.S. Capitol on 9/11, and then rewinding to images of it 30 years ago, the ad reminds viewers of Weather Underground's effort to strike the Capitol, Pentagon and police stations. A narrator then notes the Obama/Ayers friendship and that Obama is on the record defending Ayers as "mainstream."

"Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol and is proud of it? Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama," a narrators says.

American Issues Project spokesman Christian Pinkston says the initial ad buy is $2.8 million, and that this is the first of what will be a series of things the group will do to target Obama during the election. Pinkston would not disclose what issues American Issues Project will be focusing on as it targets Obama, but did indicate that the group has other provocative material that was not included in the ad.

Pinkston said Obama has been surrounding himself with "people who hate America." "If you look at the record there is a relationship here and a defense and a respect for a guy that is disturbing."

Mr. Pinkson's media and consulting firm, The Pinkston Group, did work for the anti-John Kerry group, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, in 2004.

Setup as an independent 501(c)4, American Issues Project is not required by law to disclose its donors like a regular Political PAC does, and by law, they cannot coordinate with the campaign Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

The Obama campaign disputed the idea that the group is acting on its own. "The fact that John McCain dispatched his paid consultant to launch this despicable ad from a so-called ‘independent’ committee shows how desperate he is to change the subject from his shocking disconnect with the economic struggles of the American people, said spokesman Tommy Vietor, in a statement.

"He knows that Barack Obama has denounced the detestable crimes that Bill Ayers committed forty years ago. Instead of invoking Paris, Britney and obscure sixties radicals, Senator McCain should take the day off at one of his seven homes to consider whether his support for outsourcing, tax breaks for companies who ship jobs overseas and continued spending of ten billion a month in Iraq is really putting ‘country first.’ To us, it sounds like just more of the same."

There is a less than direct connection to McCain, One of American Issues Project's backers, Ed Failor Jr. worked for the senator's presidential campaign last year in Iowa.  He was let go during a summer shake up after months of poor fundraising and media coverage.

View the ad on the group's website by clicking HERE.

Below is a script.

NARRATOR: Beyond the speeches, how much do you know about Barack Obama? What does he really believe?

Consider this: United 93 never hit the Capitol on 9/11. But the Capitol was bombed thirty years before - By an American terrorist group called Weather Underground that declared 'war' on the U.S. - Targeting the Capitol, the Pentagon, police stations and more.

One of the group's leaders, William Ayers, admits to the bombings, proudly saying later: 'We didn't do enough.' Some members of the group Ayers founded even went on to kill police.

But Barack Obama is friends with Ayers, defending him as, quote, 'Respectable' and 'Mainstream.'

Obama's political career was launched in Ayers' home.

And the two served together on a left-wing board.

Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol...and is proud of it?

Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?

And you people wondered WHY Obama would forego public financing!

Exactly, Llama. And I remember the media pundits tut-tutting at the time that there were no 527s on the horizon to "swiftboat" Obama.

Yeah, right. How naive do they think we are?

So glad Obama's JUDGEMENT will constantly be called into account. He does have a thing for "America Haters". The rootless cosmopolitan needs to never run again...when he loses this election.

You didn't mention that an ex McCain Campaign aid was with this group also. This and Rezko was given a good go over during the democratic primaries.

It's old news and will not have any traction.

What is disturbing is McCain's lack of understanding and ,inability to come to the correct decision. Where is he going to go Iran, Syria, Poland, Russia, Ukrain, Georgia, or Afganistan? Perhaps he will maintain that Iraq is wrong and we have to stay there.

I know, I know, Mc Cain was a POW and Cindy owns the houses.

Posted by: Thinking | Aug 21, 2008 6:03:27 PM

That's going to leave a mark. All the money in the world can't hind the truth.

Posted by: Mack | Aug 21, 2008 6:03:38 PM

Well of course this is coming. John McCain couldn't put together a DECENT campaign if his life depended on it. Too bad its our country's future that is depending upon it!

Posted by: hang | Aug 21, 2008 6:03:41 PM

sounds fair to me.

I was recently at a party and a guy there was a total boozer and I knew him from a few years back because we were in this youth group together. I drove him home and he gave me five dollars. I'm guilty by association! I must be a boozer too! I'd cryfor forgiveness but I don't want to mess up my mascara. This is silly. This is like a girl wearing red pumps with a pink dress, there's no reason behind it.

Posted by: Tiff | Aug 21, 2008 6:14:54 PM

If this Ayers guy is what these people claim, why is he living an open life as a free citizen? Why hasn't the Bush administration moved to put him on trial or arrest him? Why this catastophic failure of the Bush administration to protect America against Bill Ayers? And what is the connection with Obama? They both served on some board together? With a lot of other otherwise unrelated people?

Posted by: Sean | Aug 21, 2008 6:15:46 PM

Hah! This is hilarious. McCainites hate being on the defensive. "I can't count how many homes I have"-gate must be killing them. So let's attack him about someone criminal from the 60s. Is that the best they could do? How about old voting records like voting against MLK Jr's Holiday?

Posted by: awmahn | Aug 21, 2008 6:17:07 PM

See why Obama did not fail for the public financing trap? Now you see why he flip-floped? He knows with what kind of people McCain sorrounds himself with.

Obama '08
Hillary will be waiting for you anything, to defeat you!!!! Hillary will never be president. This year the anti-Hillary candidate was Obama, next time it will be a white, southern man, most probable Mark Warner. Bet on that "horse" for he will be shower with money from Obama nation. Why do you think Obama gave him the keynote speech? Well...just in case baby!!!

Obama '08, Warner '12...Hillary never will be!!!!!

With all the unfair press and media support for Obama, his campaign spending at least 3-1 on advertising, a “World Tour” with photo opts, huge crowds, superstar treatment, Obama should be trouncing John McCain by now. So why isn’t he?

Respectfully, the polls are dropping for Obama because the people are questioning his leadership’s skills. Obama says John McCain is too old to be President. Mr. Obama, American’s have “loved and trusted” many older Presidents like Ronald Reagan who was age 71-79 while President. Obama stated that “John Mc Cain wants to serve his country, the same as I want to do”---correction again Mr. Obama, John McCain HAS served his country far and beyond the call of duty, and wants to continue this endeavor---never question his patriotism. The reason people are questioning your patriotism is not that you have a funny name (as you have repeatedly stated) they question your past and the people that have been your mentors for the last 20 years. They question legal documents (Illinois Supreme Court form for example) that you stated you have never gone by a different name. In Indonesia attending school your name was Barry Soetoro, holding citizenship in Indonesia and was listed as a Muslim (as your religion) on the paperwork. Has document been falsified by the Catholic Church? Most Americans do not care where you have lived, what school you have attended but they do want the truth---they do not want to be deceived. You said “do not question my patriotism”. Well Mr. Obama it is the “duty and responsibility” of each citizen in this country to question your leadership and patriotism and actually much more.

Barack Obama has denounced the detestable crimes that Bill Ayers committed forty years ago. ... Senator McCain should take the day off at one of his seven homes ... Zero-bama Campaign
----

A criminal is a criminal, forty years ago, or today.

Having his political career pumped up in the criminal house, financed by the criminal Ayers, and having rigorously defended his good friend, the criminal Ayers, 0-bama has demonstrated his wrong, not wright, judgment in terrorist issues.

It is time for the media to provide a detailed report of how "Foreclosure" Phil Gram, McCain's friend of 26 yrs and financial adviser helped destroy our economy

Ayres was never convicted of anything and has contributed to charitable organizations.

Let's bring out the long list of slime individuals that McCain associates with.

Posted by: Jim | Aug 21, 2008 6:23:24 PM

Have you noticed that EVERY TIME that the Obama campaign has to defend itself, it says something like "same old politics". What a tired silly statement. What does that mean? Obama is using the same political strategies that has been used for decades, so at the very least it proves to America that he is a hypocrite and a liar, for denouncing strategies that he uses himself?

it is all fair game. And this is not just guilt by association, Obama worked with Ayers, served on the same committee with him, and sent funds his way. Just another example of Obama's ridiculous history of poor judgement.

And why oh why is that college library not releasing the records that relate to this? What is he trying to hide? Oh, this is so juicy, and it will be great to reveal Obama as the dangerous fraud.

Obama...no experience, no judgement, no way.

The country will soon learn the Wrights and Ayers of his ways.

Obama linked McCain with Reed -- this makes all the coming association-based attack ads legitimate and acceptable. How this ad is smear when everything is well documented and Obama was saying those words himself? That McCain-Reed ad, on the other hand, is pretty stretchy though.

If a good investigative reporter(s) were to find out who the donors are and publish their names, this nonsense would stop immediately. The donors cannot stand the light of day.

Every ad that this group runs is a big lie. It is to our shame that negative ads like this do work to some extent.

No question that McCain knows of them and secretly approves of them.

**If a good investigative reporter(s) were to find out... **

That would assume there are any left.

The media is so sorely hurting our election process. If they would stop highlighting the nonsense and fluff, and maybe *gasp* tell us what these candidates stand for and how they propose to enact any of it, maybe we could have a real election.

As it is we have nothing but smear fest that gets us admins like the one we have now.

Tell us what these guys stand for and how they will make it work for us...PLEASE!

Whew, the McCain campaign has become super desperate. McCain not knowing the number homes owned in his family shows him to be out of touch with economic realities; the damage control kicks in to change the subject. This is so apparent many will see the desperate nature of the attacks. Besides, the negative issues being projected are reruns, rehashes, like vomit. McCain is in a boat without a rudder and lacking a clear direction for his journey.

I'm amazed at the ignorance of most of the bloggers. Anyone that can make excuses for the McCain smearing I hope get exactly what they are asking for: a third world nation. I'm glad our greatest Americans that fought and died to make the USA the greatest nation in the world don't have to listen to you idiots. I spent over 25 years in the military fighting for this nation and I'm ashamed at the dispicable comments thown at Obama and McCain, but mostly Obama. You people ought to be ashamed to call yourselves Americans! I know I'm ashamed that you do!

The cover-up is more damaging than the deed.
The Chicago Annenberg Challenge Shutdown will not go away for Obama.
Blocking access to those documents may very well be the downfall of Obama's campaign.

"McCain, Keating five guilt by association."

No one cares about the Keating five. It's a bore. News footage of a bunch of guys walking out of court. Now Ayers on the other hand is an unrepentant domestic terrorist that called for the destruction of America. With photos and footage of the actual destruction he was a part of. Which do you think will resonate more with the typical voters?

An ad revealing Obama's extreme abortion voting record is also circulating on line -- it may go to local eventually.
Now plus this. When the Obama-Wright ad comes out, a pattern will become so clear to viewers -- Obama is so extreme. He is absolutely un-electable. How many people are having buyers' remorse now?

This Ayers story is sooo old. It is a classic example of the kind of negative campaigning Republicans are so good at. "Patchwork" might be a fitting name for it. You take a lot of pieces of cloth that don't fit together in the least, apply needle and thread and voilà: A blanket. And to a Republican mind, if it looks like a blanket, it must be a blanket.

Besides, his ugly wife does not want Hillary on the ticket!! that's o.k. tho, I don't want his ugly wife in the Whitehouse...can you imagine her as first lady...ugh!

Barack Obama’s candidacy not withstanding, does a guy who acknowledges and tacitly approves of ads like these flimsy but devious Weather Underground and Resko slanders deserve our votes? We fell for this sleazy, low down and dirty, non-issue based campaigning several times already. Look where it has gotten us!

OK! I’m good with it – if enough Americans do not want Obama because he is young, or educated, or liberal, or black, or not HRC; I will respect your isms and idiosyncratic preferences. But do we really have to elect another person who is clearly shaming his past good works by putting his desire to become president before both his ethics and his country, while telling us he is doing just the opposite? Are we North Americans really as stupid as the assembly of ex-GWB minions behind John McCain believe us to be?

I’ll forgive GWB for his ineptitude. I’ll forgive John McCain for his obsession with the presidency, but I am not going to forgive us North Americans if we do this again, and I don’t think our children will either. We have all heard the adage before, “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” Well how about being fooled by the same group three times or four times or five times! Don’t you think it’s time to stand up to these people, to ask them to behave like Americans, rather than un-Americans, or to get their tails out of our politics?

Nowhere is the promise of organizing more apparent than in the traditional black churches. Possessing tremendous financial resources, membership, and-most-important-values and biblical traditions that call for empowerment and liberation, the black church is clearly a slumbering giant in the political and economic landscape of cities like Chicago.
Author: Obama in his 1988 "Why Organize"
Rev. Wright: "Obama is a politician."
The Rev. Wright has been right all along. It was Obama who was using the church as a stepping stone to his political career.
As he also did with Ayers.

Excellent campaign advt. I wish McCain would also hit hard on the anti-American connections of Obama. Obama compared his friendship with Ayers to that of his with Senator Colburn during the debates ! As if a terrorist and a respected U.S.Senator (who is also a physician)is one and the same. Is that arrogance or ignorance from Obama ? Either one disqualifies him to be the POTUS

If you want to know what john McCain is all about read the folloiung article. Old leopards do not change spots.

McCain: The Most Reprehensible Of The Keating Five
The story of "the Keating Five" has become a scandal rivaling Teapot Dome and Watergate
By Tom Fitzpatrick
You're John McCain, a fallen hero who wanted to become president so desperately that you sold yourself to Charlie Keating, the wealthy con man who bears such an incredible resemblance to The Joker.
Obviously, Keating thought you could make it to the White House, too.
He poured $112,000 into your political campaigns. He became your friend. He threw fund raisers in your honor. He even made a sweet shopping-center investment deal for your wife, Cindy. Your father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was cut in on the deal, too.
Nothing was too good for you. Why not? Keating saw you as a prime investment that would pay off in the future.
So he flew you and your family around the country in his private jets. Time after time, he put you up for serene, private vacations at his vast, palatial spa in the Bahamas. All of this was so grand. You were protected from what Thomas Hardy refers to as "the madding crowd." It was almost as though you were already staying at a presidential retreat.
Like the old song, that now seems "Long ago and far away." Since Keating's collapse, you find yourself doing obscene things to save yourself from the Senate Ethics Committee's investigation. As a matter of course, you engage in backbiting behavior that will turn you into an outcast in the Senate if you do survive.
They say that if you put five lobsters into a pot and give them a chance to escape, none will be able to do so before you light the fire. Each time a lobster tries to climb over the top, his fellow lobsters will pull him back down. It is the way of lobsters and threatened United States senators.
And, of course, that's the way it is with the Keating Five. You are all battling to save your own hides. So you, McCain, leak to reporters about who did Keating's bidding in pressuring federal regulators to change the rules for Lincoln Savings and Loan.
When the reporters fail to print your tips quickly enough--as in the case of your tip on Michigan Senator Donald Riegle--you call them back and remind them how important it is to get that information in the newspapers.
The story of "the Keating Five" has become a scandal rivaling Teapot Dome and Watergate. The outcome will be decided, not in a courtroom, but probably on national television.
Those who survive will be the sociopaths who can tell a lie with the most sincere, straight face. You are especially adept at this.
Last Friday night, on The John McLaughlin Show, which features well-known Washington journalists, the subject of the Keating Five was discussed. Panelist Jack Germond suggested that three of the Keating Five were probably already through in politics.
So you spend your days desperately trying to make sure you will be one of the survivors. You keep volunteering to go on radio and television stations to protest your innocence. Last week you made ABC's Nightline. Not long before that you somehow managed to get James Kilpatrick, the national columnist, to write a favorable paragraph about you. Last Sunday morning, you made it to national television again; this time on ABC's This Week With David Brinkley. You smiled at the panel with your usual studied insouciance. Sitting next to you was Senator John Glenn of Ohio.
Brinkley, Sam Donaldson, and George Will were the interrogators.
It was a sobering scene. There you sat with Glenn, both sweating before the cameras, waiting to answer questions: two badly tarnished American icons. No one forgets that Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. You won't let anyone forget that you were a prisoner of war. But you have played that tune too long. By now your constant reminders about your war record make you seem like a modern version of Arthur Miller's tragic failure Willy Loman.
Clearly, both you and Glenn sold your fame for Charles Keating's money. It was a Faustian bargain. It was also a bad joke on the rest of us and a disaster for many old people who lost their life's savings to Keating.
The money was never really Keating's to give. But he never would have got his hands on it if you and the rest of the Keating Five didn't halt the government takeover for two long years while Keating's people continued their looting.
And now, the tab for the Savings and Loan heist must be paid from taxpayer pockets.
On Sunday, Senators Dennis DeConcini, Alan Cranston, and Riegle refused offers to appear on the Brinkley show. What must we make of that?
You, the closest of them to Keating and the deepest in his debt, have chosen the path of the hard sell. You may even make it out of the pot, but to many, your protestations of innocence taste like gall.
You are determined to bluff your way. You will stick to your story that you were acting to help a constituent and intended to do nothing improper. The very fact you attended the meeting makes you guilty, just as every man who entered the Brinks vault went to prison.
You insist that an accounting firm Keating hired told you Lincoln was sound. Alan Greenspan, who Keating also hired, wrote a report saying it was sound. Why shouldn't you believe the people Keating hired? You were, after all, fellow employees.
Perhaps you might silence your own conscience about all this someday.
Just keep telling everyone that it was your wife's money invested in that shopping center with Keating and that you knew nothing about it. Keep saying that cynical newspaper people don't understand that every move you make has always been for the enrichment of Arizona . . . the education of our Native Americans on the reservations . . . for the love of the elderly in Sun City and Green Valley.
Keep telling them that it wasn't that you were bought off but that Charlie Keating got special help only because he was one of the biggest employers in the state.
Just keep sitting there and staring into the camera and denying that Keating bought you for money and jet plane trips and vacations.
So what if he gave you $112,000? Just keep smiling at the cameras and saying you did nothing wrong.
Maybe the voters will understand you took those tiring trips to Charlie's place in the Bahamas in their behalf. Certainly, they can understand you wanted to take your family along. A senator deserves to travel on private jets, removed from the awful crush of public transportation.
You sought out a master criminal like Keating and became his friend. Now you've discarded him. It shouldn't be surprising that you are now in the process of selling out your senatorial accomplices.
You're John McCain, clearly the guiltiest, most culpable and reprehensible of the Keating Five. But you know the power of television and you realize this is the only way you can possibly save your political career.

Since the McCains want to talk about 40 years ago why don't we show how our country was turned upside down by people like John McCain who caused people like Ayers to exist while Barack was riding his tricycle.

Obama reply, yes McCain, during YOUR time Americans were turning against Americans. It looks like you want more of the same. But 40 years is a generation and in THIS GENERATION Americans can't afford to be divided by race and ruled by the upper class. John "let them eat cake" McCain your time (just like Ayers) has past. He knew to change...Did you?

I live in NY and remember how Bush and Guiliani used the 911 tragedy for the Republican Agenda.

Guess what, remind us all.

NOT THIS TIME.

This accusation is ridiculous!! Obama was a just a MERE child when these Weather Underground groups which were anti-Vietnam War Protesters existed. Obama was introduced to Ayers by the Chicago popular political person NOTE -stepping down. Obama ran for her position and Ayers provided his house for the fund raising set up by the person stepping out of office. Obama and Ayers served on a Charity Board together for a short while. That is basically all. John Ayers was tried and not convicted. All reports of what Ayers said about bombing again were also taken out of context. Presently Ayers has become a well respected professor and educational reform expert. During those years anti-Vietnam Protesters were all over the country. Let John Ayers live his life now. He has become a productive citizen. And yes, he made a mistake, but has paid many times over.

Plus, John McCain has no reason to stand behind this. And yes, he most definitely is. This is the typical Republican witch hunt group which voters should not even tolerate. Why - John McCain has gotten help and is using the Rove Playbook.

NOTE - John McCain is one of the Keating Five who robbed investors of millions of dollars. McCain personally was involved in this. He is one of Keating Five!! He chaired the investigative senate panel and obstructed justice by not even calling upon the correct witness which he knew was involved deeply. McCain escaped prosecution, but he was very involved. McCain is not the straight shooter that he claims he is.

THIS PRESENT AD COULD VERY WELL BE ILLEGAL ACCORDING TO EXPERTS. A NEW LAW WAS PASSED IN 2003 AND SOME LEGAL TECHNICALITIES MAY MAY HAVE BEEN BROKEN. I WOULD MOST CERTAINLY CHECK THIS ABC BEFORE GIVING MUCH MORE PUBLICITY TO THIS RIDICULOUS AD.

Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think. MLK.

I need to send Senator Obama some more money just to fight McCain and Karl Rove buddies. Obama will need every dime to fight mean spirited smear tactics.

Posted by: Deborah | Aug 21, 2008 11:46:24 PM

Fox has said they will not air this ad- because they know it is a lie. Ayers lives in Chicago. Obama lives in Chicago. (big city) Ayers runs in political circles. Obama runs in political circles. End of story. These people probably had to sift through a lot of paper to find the words 'respectable' and 'mainstream' that they could somehow link to Ayers. Notice that they don't quote a full sentence? Do you know how these people work, looking for one word in an unrelated sentence in a document that they can somehow try to make an ad out of? If that's all they got, they got nothing. And by the way, it looks like McCain is also ready to attack Obama's childhood record- Obama was only 8 years old when Ayers was doing his despicable deeds. How old was McCain when Keating was defrauding the people?

LOL@ every one of you neo-con wingnuts defending this pitiful little ad. It's not like Obama knowing Ayers was a secret...but then again, when the American electorate is a collective moron, this stuff flies really well. I can't wait to see the look on all of the precious little Hannity desciples when McCain gets dusted in November.

Posted by: H | Aug 22, 2008 12:50:16 AM

Since we are going to dig into the candidates past..McCain was a womanizing boozing adulterer(cheated on wife #1 for 6, yes, SIX years before marrying wife #2 who he married for money. He even applied for a marriage license before his divorce to wife #1 was finalized. Then is mom took wife #1 to court for material things. What a great family!

He's quick to anger and has the memory of a gnat. The man doesn't even know how many homes he has-- has to ask his staff?

Forget about his choice for VP. I guess we should vet his staff since they could be the ones thinking and making decisions for him if he gets into the White House, NOT!

Posted by: clarity | Aug 22, 2008 1:46:41 AM

I'll see your AYERS and raise you a KEATING 5 " The nerve of the McCain camp saying the gloves are off. They took their gloves off a month ago. The only difference is that Obama didn't fabricate any lies. He just used the gift that keeps on giving. McCain's mouth.Has anyone noticed that McCain is not allowed to talk any more. He reads everything. My favorite moment was last week when McCain completely screwed up on something and his people put out a statement. " Senator McCain does not speak for this campaign "

Posted by: Ron | Aug 22, 2008 1:50:13 AM

Let's say Obama feels compelled to knight Hillary as VP in order to keep the racially divided Democratic party together; he will still be in the driver's seat...So all you screaming PUMAS (Pathetically Undermining Moronic ASses)will be satisfied with appearances..then you would have to ask yourselves, "Who got PUNKED?"

Posted by: clarity | Aug 22, 2008 1:53:08 AM

What I'm surprised at is that nobody has really gotten into just how much John McCain is just like George W. Bush.
Jack Cafferty (yes, I know he is decidedly left leaning) did a piece about it, but there were a few things he didn't hit on.

Specifically, the piece lacked something we're starting to see. In 2000, when Bush was beginning his rise to infamy, he used a classic and under-handed attack that will work time and time again: Using plausible deniability to uttlery slander his opponent. Sending out people you can claim "aren't part of this campaign" to unleash completely venomous filth in order to play to the lowest common denominator in the collective voter.

Fast forward to 2004 and we see it again. Bush was getting completely out-classed by John Kerry. (And I'm NOT endorsing the fact that Kerry was a terrific candidate.) What's a guy gotta do? Well, do the same as before: lie through your teeth using, again, "outsiders" to drag someone's name into the sewers.

On to 2008, and it seems the Old Dog may have indeed learned a new trick. I really wish I were wrong, but I'm not.

John McCain has sold everything he ever believed in as a politician during the past 8 years, yet has the audacity to spout off "...rather than lose a political campaign". Whatever "Maverick" used to be there has been beaten and left for dead all in the name of political advancement.

Dictated, not read.
Sincerely,
TRY AND REFUTE IT.

hmm...well McCain got his political start in Vietnam and even denounced America and stayed there longer than he needed to. I'd say, by this ad's figuring that makes McCain a Vietnamese communist. Do you really know who McCain is? And with all of McCain's flip flopping: do you really know what McCain stands for? (McCain IS a creep who cheated several times on his loyal wife, to stick his nose up younger tail, that much we do know)

When I was eight I had an uncle who went awol, my cousin robbed a bank, and an aunt baked pies for a lynch mob. I guess that makes me a pretty bad person too.

You darn repubs are not only ignorant but morally vacuous. I pray the your lies and corruption be forgiven in the end, but that that doesn't come until sometime after Nov.

I am actually old enough to remember the Weather Underground. I was a college student during the Vietnam War. I didn't believe we should be drafting kids to go to a war that made little sense to me. Many in my generation felt the same way. There were many anti-war demonstrations, some more peaceful than others, but "Make Love not War" was pretty much our mantra. Not so for The Weather Underground. They were a 60's-70's radical group that, using the war as an excuse, used violent means (read: bombs) to get their point across. What did they want? To overthrow the American government and establish a more egalitarian society (read: communism). They tried to bomb the Capitol but, thankfully, failed. If I remember correctly, they did manage to set off a few other bombs, including one that killed a policeman, and another one that actually killed some of their own members. Ayres, one of their leaders and his wife, also a member of the group, were in hiding for years. They finally were either found or gave themselves up. They were charged and brought to trial only to have the prosecutor in the trial drop the ball, getting off free and clear. Not too long ago Ayres was asked if he was remorseful for his past actions. He replied that he was only sorry he hadn't done more. What does this have to do with BHO? Well, Ayres is a neighbor of the Obamas. He hosted a fundraiser for BHO and has donated money to BHO's campaign. BHO's campaign has admitted that BHO and Ayres are "friendly". And, folks wonder why so many Dems are voting for McCain.

Posted by: maggie | Aug 22, 2008 3:41:56 AM

This is not a good strategy because it will give Obama more votes. During the primaries Obama tied with Clinton by doing two things: 1) trashing her character and 2) Screwing the left.

As Obama has flip flopped, positioned himself closer to McCain, gambling he beat the republican on style and charm - he has alianated the left who is poised to hate the guy. Even vote for Clinton who kept her word and voted against FISA.

Reminding them about Ayre, might just give them enought faith to hold their nose and vote for Obama anyway.

Posted by: Sylvia Johnsen | Aug 22, 2008 4:10:35 AM

The other thing that interests me is the way McCain supporters are exaggerating the menace this dumb group of kids brought upon our society.

Back in the 60s, they blew up a police memorial statue - twice. Blew it up once, and after it was rebuilt, blew it up again. That's it.

The group also seemingly planned to set a pipebomb under a box of nails at Ft. Dix, NJ, but that one blew up while building it, and killed the three guys building it. Seeing as this Ayers guy is still alive and kicking, I'm guessing he wasn't one of those bomb builders.

Fast forward to today, and the guy is a professor at the University of Chicago, with grown kids, a Hyde Park home, etc. Was he a knucklehead as a kid? Sure. And he deserved whatever jail time he got. But he's obviously not doing that stuff anymore, so like all felons who do their time and turn their lives around, he should be commended for the change.

Sure, it would have been better, politically, for Obama to keep more distance between himself and this guy. But they were faculty together at Chicago, so I think pointing to a couple casual encounters doesn't mean much.
