Is the Veepstakes Blunting Obama's Attacks?

ABC News' Andy Fies Reports: The fog of speculation over who will accompany Sen. Barack Obama down the aisle in Denver has obscured his message.

Usually a candidate can expect a fair amount of attention for delivering forceful remarks in a proverbial "lion's den" of his opponent's friends.

Obama told the McCain-friendly VFW convention in Orlando Tuesday that the Arizona senator had better back off questioning his patriotism. "Let me be clear," he said. "I will let no one question my love of this country."

He also sharply challenged McCain's judgement in the war on terror: "For all of his talk about following Osama bin Laden to the Gates of Hell, Sen. McCain refused to join my call to take out bin Laden across the Afghan border...."

And he added: "If we think that we can secure our country by just talking tough without acting tough and smart, then we will misunderstand this moment."

There was much more but it hardly mattered.

The three networks led their broadcasts with the Veepstakes story. On the wires, Obama-in-front-of-Vets was no match for Obama-and-his-Veeps. That story had six rewrites by 6pm. The speech challenging McCain on what has become a major character issue in this election had only two.

Tonight on MSNBC, Dan Abrams led a discussion about Obama's use of the pronoun "he" instead of "she" when asked to describe the qualities he wanted in a running mate.

John McCormick, the Obama reporter for the Chicago Tribune said the VFW story would figure in "somewhere at the bottom" of his Tuesday piece which was all about the coming VP selection.  He added, "And that (section) will probably get cut down."

Regardless of whether the media is leading or responding to interest in who will be veep, the frenzy is predictable. This is one of the last major unknowns of the campaign.

There are no doubt compelling reasons for the time it has taken Obama to choose his running mate.  The question is, has he paid a price for his deliberateness?

For the main stream media Obama is the black man that gets arrested in the beginning of the local news at night. The more negative the media can get when it comes to him the better for their ratings. The media is selling America down the river. Just like they did with the Iraq war!

That's it media. Keep making white people scared of Obama and say NOTHING about McCain. Help us to continue to loose our homes, son and daughters in this war and gut our jobs away. When the economy goes under and we are all in real trouble all of these Obama haters will deserve what they get! DO NOT complain when you get BUSH 3. You deserve it! You voted for it!

Obama and his team are wet behind the ears. They reek of inexperience.

We could care less who he chooses for VP.

We, the 28% Hillary supporters, are not flip floppers ... Country before Party

Hillary for President or
MCCAIN for President.

What doesn't the Obama people understand in that?
What doesn't the media understand in that?
What doesn't the DNC understand in that?

other people dont care to hear you rant and rave about puma anymore!!
what dont you understand about that??

Posted by: melissa | Aug 20, 2008 1:23:21 AM

The fact of the matter is that black people are among the most patriotic people there are in this country.
Blacks have suffered abused, mistreatment, misunderstanding, and persecution. They could have moved to a more welcome place to be...yet, they forgave and they stayed.
I don't know that white people would have done the same. I do not know that they would have forgiven.
We owe much to them. It is time to stop talking about patriotism or the lack of it.

Republicans should be embarrassed.

I for one, cannot live another 4 years of a corrupt republican government.

We need to vote Democrat in this election.

Im going to be shocked if anyone in the republican party would be willing to be vp to mccain.

who is going to want to stand next to a man who jokes about cancer when we have so many people that die from it in our own country? who is going to want to stand by mccain when he says we are all mental if we think the economy is bad?

and he doesnt ever learn from his own ignorance!

Posted by: melissa | Aug 20, 2008 1:29:54 AM

We the 28% Hillary supporters are DETERMINED to help MCCAIN win ...

Talking about your man are you?

Posted by: Who?BO | Aug 20, 2008 1:33:48 AM

Like BO so much, take him home with you and keep him there forever.

Spare the rest of us please.

Posted by: TakeHimHomeWithU | Aug 20, 2008 1:34:56 AM

Andy, why don't you vote for an Indian-American?? I think we owe them so much more than Blacks. We nearly wiped out all of their people. Your statement is just as stupid as it sounds. There are patriotic citizens, blacks or whites or other colors in this country but there are also radical liberals are unpatriotic who are also coming difference races. Meaning most of blacks are patriotic but that doesn't mean obama is one of them. No president contender should even need to be defending about their patriotism but obama always has to. And that gotta tell you something. What makes people question his patriotism and why does he keep defending it?? Make you wonders.

i take care of people with Alzheimer's who have more intellect than mccain!

Posted by: melissa | Aug 20, 2008 1:37:08 AM

Melissa, your statement makes me glad that you're an obamaniac.

Posted by: hannah | Aug 20, 2008 1:41:49 AM

"We could care less who he chooses for VP."
I agreed because he isn't chosen by us, the 18 millions Hillary supporters.

Posted by: stock_craft | Aug 20, 2008 1:44:28 AM

All the hype about who Obama chooses for VP.

WHO CARES!!!!!

WE CARE LESS WHO THE H*LL he chooses for VP and WE CARE LESS WHAT HE IS DOING, WHERE HE IS SPEAKING ...

DONT CARE ONE BIT ...
GET THAT?

Posted by: DONT CARE ABOUT HIS VP | Aug 20, 2008 1:51:05 AM

Too busy soliciting votes for MCCAIN to be bothered who Obama chooses for his VP.

CNN can hype that all they want ... WHO IS LISTENING? Cause we aren't

Does not matter who he chooses for VP.
MCCAIN for President.
NO OBAMA FOR US, THE 28% HILLARY SUPPORTERS.
At least, we are not a flip flopper like BO.

Posted by: MCCainNow | Aug 20, 2008 1:53:47 AM

In my 49 years I cannot remember a Presidential candidate EVER having to prove his patriotism because of questionable past/associations. Or a web site to stop the smears. Where there is smoke there IS fire.
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN!
